Tina Fey Brings the Quote of the Day
February 12, 2010 in Celebrity Quotes, Tina Fey by Versus
“People will say, ‘Oh, fashion magazines are so bad, they’re giving girls a negative message’–but we’re also the fattest country in the world, so it’s not like we’re all looking at fashion magazines and not eating. Maybe it just starts a shame cycle: I’m never going to look like that model, so… Chicken McNuggets it is! And conversely, I don’t look at models who are crazy skinny and think I want to look like that, because a lot of them are gigantic, with giant hands and giant feet.”
… says Tina in Vogue Magazine
P.S.: Tina is looking quite skinny on that cover.

I love Tina Fey and her show 30 rock! She is an example of smart and very talented woman. Also what she is saying is pretty fair. It is surprising me too, how these skinniest standarts can come from the fattiest country in the world?! Hillarious!
i adore tina fey!! someone told me i reminded her of tina and i was glowing for a week! i love how, on 30 rock, the running joke is that liz is like, not put together or fat or something. we all know that tina fey is gorgeous. she’s who she is and, in real life, she’s proud of it.. and that’s what makes her so special.
I don’t like her message here.
I hate that some people can’t feel good about themselves without knocking others down.
Like when she said I don’t want to look like some of the skinny models because they have big hands and feet!
I’m 5’9″ and yeah when you are taller, you are naturally going to have longer, but not necessarily bigger, bones. So, you are going to have long feet and hands, but that’s different from saying tall girls have giant hands and feet, you know?
Honestly, having long, bony hands and feet is what I hate most about my body, so her saying this just validates how I feel about my body, screw u Tina.
she’s right
she looks skinny on the cover because of something called photoshop. that cover was way overdone. not sure how you notice it with some people and not this cover.
Tina Fey isn’t close to big. If she was she would not be on the cover of Vogue. Anna Wintour is a known Fat-O-Phobe. Even Oprah had to lose weight to get on the cover of Vogue. While i concede this is probably photoshopped (because everything is), I don’t think she’s that much bigger in real life. The thing here is Tina knows what game she’s playing. No one cared about her a few years and thirty pounds ago. It wasn’t until she lost weight that people actually began to pretend she exists.
Umm… I DID notice it, which is why I said: “Tina is looking quite skinny on that cover.” – Photoshop is implied.
I didn’t notice she looked skinnier till you guys pointed it out..her arms look a bit smaller but then again she isn’t fat what so ever she is thin so idk..
She is pear shaped anyways. Thinner on top and carrys most of her weight in her hips.
WOW that’s one of the most offensive comments Ive heard from a celebrity in a long time. Thats EXACTLY what many young girls think, especially because womens’ slender bodies area associated with power, status, wealth.
Yes, there is an American obesity problem. But there also a horrible more insidious mental health epidemic called anorexia nervosa that no one wants to talk about because its uncomfortable. We often laugh along with plus sized comedians when they joke about their weight, but does anyone hear kate bosworth laughing at herself for being extremely underweight? Tina Fey, I expected better from you.
she’s a comedian. lighten up.
hmm that cover looks like something people magazine would publish…the titles of the articles are just..not for vogue?”de-fanged, robert pattison on life beyond twilight ” just saying….
Hahaha giant hands and giant feet! LOL so true
Haha I never thought of them having huge hands and feet! I suddenly feel better about my 5’4 frame
me too
What would you expect from a 5’10″ woman?? I’m 5’9″, should I have tiny, short hands and feet, that would look much stranger bi000 t c h!
To be honest I don’t understand why people think this quote is funny just because america is the fattest country in the world doesnt give magazines the right to put these alarmingly thin models in some cases in these magazines who weight anything from 110-120 pounds I dont really see where there is parallel between the two. And as for her saying she never wants to look like a model because they are gigantic and blah blah blah. Tina Fey models NEVER WANT TO LOOK LIKE YOU. Your not easy on the eyes. I hate when people make a big deal about tall people like if they’re some mythical creature and an attraction at barnum & baley circus. BTW Tina im 6ft tall not gigantic and have normal sized hands and tiny looking feet!!!
I agree completely! Can’t women just quit nitpicking over irrelevant qualities like feet??!! I don’t mind as much judging qualities that can typically be improved upon like weight or hairstyle, but critisizing unchangable features like feet, ear or hand size is just rude!
Tina is looking quite skinny on the cover…Photoshop skinny, that is. She’s not nearly that thin in real life.
I love her quote. Obesity is the real problem but its easier to blame magazines and models.
i love tina fey and completely agree with her. while i dont think the media is a postive influence on girls i dont think they are as to blame as everyone says they are. everyone goes on and on and on about how images in magazines cause eating disorders. while they could contribute eating disorders are usually caused by different things like traumatic events and the sufferer is seeking a sense of control rather than just trying to be thin. its not like a girl sees a pic of a skinny model and instantly develops a mental illness. personality, family history and life events contribute to eating disorders more than the media.
More like giant HEADS (bobblehead) and giant EGOS…
And I like her personality and sense of humor but she’s just about the least sexually attractive celebrity I can think of in the sense that shes, well, just not SEXY.
what– you’re not into THIS?? http://www.hulu.com/watch/64656/30-rock-lizs-acting-history
there’s more to life than being sexy. tina fey is hot. she’s smart and hilarious, and that’s way better than being a model.
LIKE I SAID, I love her sense of humor. She’s smart and her writing is awesome. My POINT was, I’m not attracted to her- that’s all. Get it?
I kind of agree and disagree with what she is saying.
I have worked with many anorexic girls in the past few years and no, magazines are not to blame for their eating disorders. It rarely has to do with how thin girls are in photoshoots. Even if you have never spoken to an anorexic, you can see that they do not care about looking like models simply based on the fact that many of them strive to be thinner than any working model, and feel that at the same size as most models, they themselves are “fat.”
However, I have also seen cases where people’s self esteems are greatly destroyed by only portraying thin women in magazines. My friend feels “too big” at a size 6. That’s sad to me, because she has a great body in my opinion.
To say that magazine covers don’t make people feel bad because most people are overweight is not very logical. They might care, and their self-esteem and confidence might be lowered. But perhaps, they cannot do anything about it. Maybe they don’t have the means or time to work out and eat healthy. Maybe they were raised around a lifestyle of bad habits that are hard to break and they can’t find the motivation to get to a healthier weight.
But to simply dismiss the issue is silly. What about the women that feel inadaquate that are not overweight? But I guess Tina Fey is a commedian so maybe she was just trying to be funny.
i definately agree that only showing seriously underweight models in magazines can be damaging to the self esteem of healthy people, but to say that overweight people cant do anything about it is ridiculous. of course there is a very small number of people who may really really struggle with maintaining a healthy weight due to a slow metabolism or other medical issues, however the majority of people are just lazy. it IS hard to break bad habits but you dont have to be rich to eat healthily (usually healthy food is cheaper than junk food) and you dont need all the time in the world to exercise. im sure most overweight people that claim they dont have time to exercise spend time watching tv or could find atleast a spare 20 minutes in their day.
“of course there is a very small number of people who may really really struggle with maintaining a healthy weight due to a slow metabolism ”
that’s me!! LOL
Where I live (LA), healthy food is definetly not cheaper than junk food. I guess they overprice it here because there is a huge demand for it.
And I didn’t mean it was physically impossible for them to lose weight. I meant, it most likely isn’t happening for the following reason. I mentioned lazyness kind of (lack of motivation). All I’m saying is just because a person is overweight doesn’t mean they wouldn’t like to be a healthier weight, even if they’re not doing anything about it.
well i live in australia and a kg of fruit or vegetables is generally alot cheaper than a kg of chocolate or chips unless it is like something not in season. eg a 50g chocolate bar is $2 and a kg of carrots is $2 or $3. i guess that could just be here but when i went to new york the prices didnt seem to be much different (except that all the food was cheaper in general).
and yeah i agree with you about people wanting to change but having a lack of motivation because thats the hardest thing. to want to be able to put in the effort and change is really hard especially if you have grown up with unhealthy food choices.
I disagree about health food being cheaper than junk food. I only shop at health food stores and my bill doubled when I started doing that, but it’s worth it. You can make it less expensive by eating vegetarian instead of organic, free range meat. But all in all, I’d say it’s a lot more expensive.
i mean healthy food like fruit and vegies not stuff from health food stores cos yeah that stuff is more expensive.
Nice comment Casey. I like it and agree.
i think it’s important to not confuse convenience with cheapness. i mean i agree with you but so many people see fast food as cheaper because it’s easier. but the truth is that you’d get more bang for ur buck if you bought your food from the grocery and cooked it yourself. and plus you could control the amount of calories that go into your food a lot easier.
I wasn’t referring to fast food, I was referring to shopping at the grocery store. Save Mart is a lot cheaper than Whole Foods.
Just to add a few cents in.. I must say that my eating disorder wasent caused by magazines BUT was fueled by them. I think Tina needs to be careful with that statement. Obviously there is going to be a larger Obesity issue than anorexia issue… but what abould bulimia. I think it was 1 out of every 3 women suffers with bulimia during some time of their life. And this disease is netiehr an anorexia and obesity problem. Magazines, photos, videos, movies, tv, it ALL contributes to self esteem issues. As long as their are humans there are comparisons. And when girls are younger )and older too.. but specifically when their minds are still developing and with puberty too) they are more vulnerable to what they look at and reflect those pictures to how they look. Even now after 2 years of recovery I still look at certain pics and compare their bodies to mine and think “i work out so much, why do my thighs have a fold here or there and theirs dosent” but now that im older I can calm myself and say “no, wait, thats airbrushed” … and lets not forget boys who are also affected. All I’m saying is that its easy for Tina Fey who dosent have body issues to come out and say “Don’t blame us.. I don’t want to be skinny” because she is a 40 something who has grown confident in her skin. She’s not a young adult or teen growing up in the pressures of the 21st century. There’s two sides to every story.
