Sara Rue Talks About Her 50 Pounds Weight Loss (Plus Video)
September 2, 2010 in Celebrity Quotes, Then and Now by Versus
“I’m done losing weight. I feel great, and I love looking like a woman. I love being curvy and having boobs and hips. It’s hot. I don’t ever want to be size zero.”
“I do my workouts five times a week. I work out with my trainer one or two times a week, and we run together. As long as I do cardio for 45 minutes to an hour each day I work out, I feel like I’m okay.”
… says actress Sara Rue in People Magazine. Sara managed to lose 50 pounds and to go from size 14 to size 6.
See Sara’s weight loss ad for Jenny Craig below and tell us what you think!

She’s an inspiration. I feel kind of lazy compared to her. She lost 50 lbs and I can’t even lose 10. grrrr
It’s harder to lose the last ones, trust me. You’re working on perfecting; she was working on major loss.
She is very pretty now. But all those news are getting so old. Most of slimmed down starts are talking about the same weight loss routine and giving generic advice. It is boring since the weight loss key is eating healthy in moderation plus working out. What else it could be?!
Exactly…in the information is all the same, the difference is in the presentation.
I guess people just need to find what works for them.
ok you never know with these diet companies and celeb quotes, but it sounds like she’s doing great, and she looks wonderful. i hope she’s learnt a lifestyle she can maintain
She was always an attractive woman, but looks awesome now. She has achieve, now true success is in the maintenance.
My only issue with Jenny Craig is the mailed meal plans…how do you learn to properly prepare (cook) your meals so that you can maintain the healthier lifestyle? That’s why I like programs like Weight Watchers because it teaches you life long success.
Think of all the sodium & hidden ingredients/preservatives in those meals. Yuck!
i think with that much cardio she might be on her way to losing her boobs and hips unless she makes sure to eat enough. i just know that when i started running 5x a week my boobs up and disappeared.
That depends whether your boobs consist of just fat or is an actual boob
If your breasts are largely fat then yes you will lose them when you exercise regular, but i know plenty of big chested ladies who have exactly the same size chest they did before they lost weight and started exercising. Same goes for sara, depending on whether her booobs are boobs or fat will determine whether she will lose them by exercise.
Not everyones body reacts the same to exercise. I work out 5x a week in interval training style work outs-strength and cardio combined etc.-and stayed a dd. I’m 5 foot 5, 115lbs, and have a 32dd! Lol. Part of the reason I work out so much is bc I want them smaller. But a year later, and no shrinkage. Some people just have different body reactions.
that is so true!!! when i lost about fifteen pounds i went from a nice B or C cup to absolutely nothing like a A or AA. which was super annoying since my legs hardly ever get any smaller!!
did you try switching your chest size as well as the cup? just checking, not trying to be a b!tch. Because I lost weight around my ribcage when I went through my major weight change, cup size stayed the same. granted I’ve never been more than an A. Whicvh makes me really jealous of udkcoco up there who weighs ten pounds less than me and is and inch taller
She looks great, but I really don’t understand why she had to comment on being a size 0 or having boobs to look like a woman. The “real woman have curves” vs. the “skinny mini’s” crowd is getting old. Last time I checked the only thing required to be a woman was a “cooch”. As long as the woman is healthy and fit regardless the body shape they can be beautiful. It’s time everyone stopped knocking each other and embraced our differences. That being said, Sara looks beautiful and very happy. Good for her.
lol
“cooch” – but yeah you are right. Sara looks amazing, I always thought she was pretty, but the skinny-bashing is getting old (though probably a lot of people make skinny-bashing comments without even realising it or even meaning it now, since it has become so common)
ahh, perfectly said! i’m sooo sick of hearing the bashing against naturally skinny girls. i mean, i’m not stick skinny, but i am healthy thin, yet hearing these comments about how you “need to have boobs to be womanly” make me mad/sad. you can’t chose your boob size…they come depending on your genes. that being said, you can be womanly with no boobs and womanly with.
we just need to stop bashing body types, you guys. why is it that we only hear it about girls, and NEVER guys?? why do girls have to look a certain way and guys don’t? it’s so pathetic. we need to all just shuttup, stop talking about other people’s bodies, and focus, instead, on more important things.
I took it a different way. I read it as she was excited to have a body shape, her new waist emphasized her bust, and she wasn’t going to lose anymore weight, she wasn’t trying to be the smallest size, she’s fine where she is. but I guess she’s the only one who knows what she meant by it.
that’s how i took it as well
She looks fantastic! I hope she can maintain it. She looks very happy.
Can people please stop hating on size 0, 2, or even 4 girls? I’m a size 2 naturally, with no a**, wthr, or bust, and just have a natural rular slender type shape. I’m tired of hearing celebrities tell me I’m not a ‘real’ woman because I don’t have a chest or ‘curves’. I’d get so much crap for saying, “Oh, I’m a size 2 and I’d hate being a size 12. All that body fat is totally unattractive and not what men like at all.”
I really don’t think it was her intention to put down people who are naturally very small. What she is saying (I think) is that for her to be a size zero is unrealistic, and would make her look a lot less feminine, because of her natural shape.
I’m not a size 2 and I have a ‘womanly’ figure, but I completely agree that there is too much hype now for the fuller figures and against the thinner ones. It used to be the other way around – but it’s now swung too far in the other direction. I think women need to be told by the media that you can be attractive whatever your size or shape – there is no ‘real woman’ figure – we’re all different and diversity is beautiful! Imagine if all women had the same shape – it would be so boring and we’d have nothing to bitch about anymore!
I agree; not to mention when you are a size zero with C cups and bubble butt. Yes, it happens. I am both sickly skinny and too curvy according to this people. Stop bashing. It is immature and proves ignorance. People come in all shape and sizes, that is acceptance, not constantly bashing one size or the other. That is just being an ignorant.
yeah thats the way i feel aswell. people should open up their eyes and raise their awarness and be more sensitive about what they are saying/the way they think.
Again with putting down size zero. Now, I’m not a size sero, more of a 6-8, but I still don’t agree with putting someone else down to build yourself up.
All she said is that boobs and hips are sexy. Now, if a size zero can have boobs and hips, ok, I could go for it. If not, then, no thanks. I mean, boobs and hips ARE sexy. That’s all. They are sexy. Period. Okay, a woman can still be godd looking and beautiful with no boobs and no hips… But sexy is a different thing and unless you have curves on the right places, sorry, you are not sexy. But you can as well be a good looking woman. Example? Monica Belluci is sexy (and beautiful, sexy is always beautiful). Kiera Knigthley is good looking, but far from being sexy. The equation is simple: boobs+hips= sexy. I’m sorry to say that, but most of the men will drool for that… And you all know girls that us men are often a little stupid. We are like kids excited by a good pair of boobs because they’ve never seen any and we’ll stay stupid kids. Deal with it. That said, a man could still fall in love with a woman that has no boobs and hips and find her beautiful. But he will always love seing sexy boobs and hips. We are like that. That may be a little sad, sorry. I didn’t mean to offend size zero, by the way. I said that a size zero with curves would be okay, but I doubt that could exist…
Okay, girls, you see what is guy is saying here. Actually I know it is true and although I am trying to stay as slim as possible I know I cannot go down too much because I will lose my boobs and butt means not looking sexy for most guys anymore. I remember my days at highschool I was super flat. And all guys were drooling over girls with boobs and hips. I used to envy them so much back to then. And when I have got my D’s I realised I have got some power. Sad, as Daniel said, but it is true. So I never understand thincraze because in any even Monica and Salma are always on the top of the sexiest women list.
Weird , I know plenty of men who “drool over” Keira , or Megan or various different not so curvy women. Just like they do over the curvy ones. Different strokes for different folks.
That comment is just like saying all women only find men with big bulky muscles sexy.
hahaha. wow, this really is a lot of bullshit.
you’ve got to be a woman…im sorry i just dont believe that you as a guy would take time out to write on what basically is a women’s forum
I was about to say the same thing. Its definitely a girl…. so obvious, you can tell by what she’s saying.
Daniel has been around here before, and he def has a preference for the more “nubile” women. But Daniel, that’s YOUR opinion and preference. and a girl can have one or the other (T&A) and get along just fine in life.
and vice versa, women love seeing strong shoulders, nice arms, a nice broad chest, six-pack abs – those things are sexy. like you said we’ll look for the rest of our lives, and yet we could “still fall in love with someone” who doesn’t have all those features. (It’s only because we’re sooo benevolent though)
and btw sometimes “sexy” is just plain trashy
Daniel you sound silly. I’m a girl, and I exclusively, only ever ever ever go for guys who are really skinny. Muscle, no thank you. at all. never, and i dont find it hot when i see it on the tv. just like all guys have their preferences. we look for what we look for, and the media tells us what we SHOULD be looking for = confusion
“I said that a size zero with curves would be okay, but I doubt that could exist…”
Do you want a picture? Maybe that way you will be just a tad less ignorant. It exists, it is mocked, everyone thinks it is ok to be rude to and we are still a myth.
Celebrities aren’t stupid. They know that over 60% of Americans are overweight/obese. They know that if they lose weight that they don’t want to alienate their fan base by appearing to get too skinny, so they make these comments about curves and being a woman and comfortable in my own skin, blah blah blah. You see, they really do have to conform to the Hollywood standard while making themselves appear relatable.
She claims to be 115 now, which is ridiculous. A 5’8″ woman who’s 115 cannot possibly be a size 6. It would be skin and bones, maybe even that size 0 that she says she doesn’t want to get down to.
135 at 5’8″ is a size 6. She’s lying about her before and after weight. She’s forcing women to compare themselves to a lie, and that’s a shame.
she does?? that would give her a BMI of 17.5! I agree with you it seems highly doubtful that she actually weighs that little – not because of her clothing size, but because she doesn’t appear to be underweight at all. Maybe she is lying about the amount of weight she actually lost.
she cannot be at 115 now! im 110 and im 5,3 and im skinnier than her. 135 seems more correct
Before I say this, I gotta say that I love Sara! She is gorgeous and she has done really well with her weight loss
But – I really think a lot of celebs lie about their weight in a big way.
It is possible she is telling the truth as we are all different in our shapes and sizes and how we carry our weight etc etc BUT 165lbs would have given her a BMI of 25.1.
I’ve also done Jenny craig & lost almost 50lbs – I’ve still got a bit to go but when I started I was a 14 at 5ft7, I had a very similar figure to her and I was 225lbs and my BMI was around 35!!
I realise its possible for some people to be a 14 and be at a healthy weight too – but I don’t think she was (I’m ignoring the 0.1 extra on the BMI here).
I have a large frame so I was probably heavier than most girls around the same weight/height/size – but I would say that she would have been close to 200lbs
When people think “obese”, they think Gabby Sidibe or Nikki Blonski, but the reality is that a lot of regular girls walking down the street who we perceive as just being a bit overweight, are actually obese.
I am 5’9″, 185, and a size 12/14. My measurements are 42, 32, 44. Look at Sarah Rue. If you were a size 14 at 225, you must be really dense, or complete muscle.
For Sarah to claim to be a size 14 at 165 would only make sense if her bones were hollow, and she had absolutely no muscle and was made of skin and fat.
At 165 (before I had my son last year) I was a size 10. In high school, I got down to 135. I was so skinny, I wore a size 7 (Juniors), a size 6 misses. That’s how I come to the conclusion that she is LYING!!!!
yikes how is she claiming she weighs 115 pounds. goodness that is what models weigh and arn’t they like a size 2. She definitely does not look like that at all. I am 5’9 and weigh way way more then that but i am still a size six or eight. Maybe she has a really small frame or something becuase she really doesn’t look like a six in that picture.
She looks closer to maybe 136 than 115. Considering her 5`8 frame. I’m betting she was a at least 160-ish before Jenny, so that is still a tremendous accomplishment for her, I just wish she wouldn’t exaggerate the loss. Anyone with any sense knows that a 5’8 woman down to 115 would look like a biafran– not a healthy size six.
bad acting, very bad
I doubt she started at 165. I am 5’9″, and when I weighed 165 I was a size 10. Not a size 14. She looked more like she weighed 185 to me. And, she looks like she weighs 135 now. I’m sick of false numbers. It forces us to compare ourselves to a lie. If she was honest in the beginning, girls who weigh 135 wouldn’t think they needed to lose 20 lb when in reality they look just the same.
Stupid lies.
I agree with your comment completely. I’m 5’9″, and if I weighed in the 160s I too would wear a size 10. There’s absolutely no way this woman weighs 115 lbs right now.
Yeah I’m a little confused too. I’m only 5’4″ and weigh about 135 lbs and I think she actually looks bigger than me especially her hips. I actually think she’s actually around 145 lbs.
Hmm, don’t know why I used the work “actually” so much. lol
“word” not “work” my brain is gone today.
She looks great and has lost alot of weight but no way is she a size 6. The Jenny Craig spokes people always stretch the size thing a little. :/
so over hearing weight loss stories….
And yet you continue to click on the articles … huzzah!
true true….im kind of addicted to this site though
She looks like a size 18-20 before and a size 8-10 after weight loss. Why lie so much about your size?? She looks awesome.
No…6 is just about right for someone her height…it’s what a 34″ bust, 27″ waist? And she’s 5’8-5’9? And she looks like this with no photoshop? I could see an 8…maybe. But not a 10. And she certainly wasn’t anywhere near a 20 before.
She looks like a size 6 to me, but she definitely doesn’t weight 115. And she didn’t weigh 165 when she was a size 14.
Aw frick. Does she cry in this? I got so sick of everyone being on the rag in these commercials. Give her a year, it’ll all come back. It has happened with every single Jenny spokesperson.
I very much doubt she will keep the weight down. She seems to be going to extremes with her diet and exercise and that’s hard to keep up unless you develop an eating disorder. Some people just end up with disordered habits AND the lost weight back on.
Actually, in the first picture she already looks heavier than in the video. I bet after her wedding and her weightloss show, she’ll balloon.
She looked better with more weight.
I don’t think she’s necessarily lying about being 115. Weight can be carried in all sorts of strange ways. I’m 5’3 and a size 6, but weigh about 140 lbs. No lie. Weight comes in everywhere…muscle mass, frame size, even the density of bones themselves!
I bet you look great too! At your weight and height, you’d be considered overweight. BUT, at a size 6, it’s pretty much impossible to be overweight. You’re an example of why BMI is a crappy system, and insurance companies should take measurements and not weights.
I agree that weight can be carried differently in different people. I’m 5’5 and 144 lbs and I wear a size 6 as well. I work out and eat right as well as do weight training which adds muscle and pounds. I don’t think it’s very likely that she’s 115 though. Considering that she would be almost 30 lbs lighter than me and 3 inches taller, you’d think she would be in a smaller size than me. Even taking into consideration different body shapes. Especially since she’s been working out as well and likely gaining muscle.
Based on her height (if that’s even correct) and that picture, I would guess her to be about 145-150 lbs and a size 8. In the video, probably 135 and a size 6. And I’m very good at guessing these things considering I’ve been obsessed with weights and stats since a young age stemming from an eating disorder.
She looked to be around 180-185 at the beginning. Not 165. That’s crap.
Those are just my opinions though. But as I said, I’m pretty good with these things. I could probably be one of those “guess your weight” people at the carnival!
Every time I try to eat healthy and work out I end up gaining at least 10 pounds. It´s all about committment, determination, porcion control and, most important, not eating during the night
After my delivery, I lost weight quickly and I am even thiner then before pregnancy, but last five pound to ideal weight is the hardest thing to loose. Any advice?
Eset , the last five pounds are always the hardest!! I feel your pain. These are things that work for me:
I make sure I drink eight glasses of water a day , staying hydrated may actually help you lose weight because most of the time when you think you are hungry you are actually just thirsty. Weird Huh?
Take a multivitamin , if you make sure your body is getting all the minerals it needs you may find that because your body is not lacking anything it might become easier to shed pounds.
Keep a journal of what you eat , don’t be obsessive about it though , I know that is hard for some people and don’t try to drastically alter your eating habits to fit a mold of what you think you should be eating , but keeping a journal for reference will help you analyze what foods tend to make you bloat or make your weight go up.
If you eat meats , try to get more lean proteins like chicken and fish. I tend to stay away from beef in general but that is just me.
ummmm , I can’t think of anything else right now….except don’t try any of those quick weight loss schemes , they are just stupid , if you try to lose more than 2 pounds per week you might cause your body to go into starvation mode which will in turn just end up causing you to gain weight which is a HUGE downer and really i just discouraging.
Good Luck!!!!!
I also recently lost 50 pounds (did it on my own). I went for 220 lbs. to 169 lbs. and am really happy with how I look but am still around a size 13/14 or 15/16 (I am very curvy with fairly big hips).
I do agree with what the other Mary said above. I personally thing Sara was a bit heavier than she claims or she is short since losing 50 lbs. is a lot of weight and people have noticed it on me and like I said, I only dropped a few sizes (I wore 15/16 or 17/18 jeans when I was 50 lbs. heavier, yet really only dropped a couple of size, go figure because I did lose in my belly/hip/waist area).
Like I said, I am curvy so that is definitely a factor, but still.
This isn’t the first time Sara Rue has lost a lot of weight. She was really chubby back in 2005, and then lost a lot of weight in 2006; she looked even thinner than she looks now. Then she gained all the weight back and had to lose it all over again, this time while making money representing Jenny Craig. She is naturally a bigger person, but is always fighting it. She should try to find a happy medium instead of yo-yoing all the time, which is really unhealthy, especially with such big swings.
I want to know when a size 14 became “fat”. I’m 5’8″ 150-155lbs and average a size 12 pants, and I have never thought of myself as large. As a matter of fact, if I lose weight and fit into a size 10, you can see my ribs, which just looks unhealthy! Does anyone know what Sara weighed when she was a 14 and tall she is?
Thank you! I want to know this too. I’m from the Midwest, and I guess we have different standards, but I don’t think anyone (except for certain posters here on SvsC) would look at me (a size 12) and think “oh, she’s fat.”
She might have been a size 14W, which is a lot different than a Misses 14. She could also be one of these people who had ONE pair of pants that were a size 14, but actually wears a 16. I have two skirts that are size 8, but I don’t go around claiming to be an 8, because most of my clothes are a size 12.
Sarah Rue looks great now, but I doubt she weighs as little as she claims.
