Kristin Cavallari Talks Workout and Diet (Plus Then & Now)
January 12, 2010 in 1 Girl 2 Outfits, Kristin Cavallari, Then and Now by Versus
From US Magazine:
Kristin Cavallari’s workout mentality? No pain, no gain.
The Hills star, 23, takes a circuit training class at her gym that “kicks your ass,” she tells UsMagazine.com.
“I never want to go and I walk out dripping in sweat and it kills you, but it works,” she admits of the class, called Burn 60. “And I feel good… This is the first time in my life where I’ve really been working out consistently.”
“Once you see results, you want to maintain them and you want to keep it going and that makes you want to go to the gym,” she tells Us.
As for her diet, Cavallari’s secret to staying slim and trim is all about control — and a reward!
“Control for six days of the week,” she says, “and then letting yourself eat whatever you want on that one day!”
Are you supporters of the “control 6 days, eat whatever 1 day” diet/lifestyle?
Anyway, Kristin got very thin and I personally think she looked prettier / healthier before the weight loss. Pictured: Kristen 14 months ago (in yellow) and Kristen now (in purple).
Which Kristen do YOU prefer?

I think she looks awesome now. She’s very toned and in shape.
She’s obviously pretty, but I think I prefer her before picture.
She looked thin and healthy. Where as I think she looks perhaps a little too boney now.
Agree. She looks good now but I prefer her before body, now is too skinny
I agree as well.
Yes, I agree, too.

Enjoy!!! She pretty sexy….
I love her hair and makeup in the first pic. I think she did get a bit too thin. A happy medium would be better.
The difference doesn’t appear very big. She looks great in both of those photos. Talking about her diet, I completely understand her. I work out 3 times at a gym and everyday lift weighs at home and my diet is… not like a diet, but I eat 3 meals a day (around 1000cal) and no food after 6pm. And one day in week I let myself eat some sweets or chips. :] I think it’s healthy enough
1000 cal in a day? That is all you eat every day? That may be ok if you want to lose weight, but every single day when wanting to maintain? It’s too low, you need 1600, even if you are tiny.
1000 is way too restrictive to be healthy. There’s a certain amount of calories that the body has to have to survive without feeding off of your muscles/organs. That number is over 1000 unless you are 3 feet tall.
i follow a diet i eat around 900 cals 5 days a week eat junk on weekend.i workout 3/4 days a week to maintain my weight.i think its a good way of staying in shape.
WOW. That seems like so few! No offense, but what is the weight you’re trying to maintain? Cause for the most part, I can exercise 3/4 days a week, eat normally and maintain my weight.
No, you don’t follow a diet, honey, you’re STARVING yourself, probably due to disordered thinking.
Nobody can tell you what to do, but don’t go around trying to pretend what you’re doing is healthy and normal.
It’s been proven that anything under 1200 you are GUARANTEED not getting all your required nutrients, vitamins minerals and other essentials. And that’s 1200 calories that a doctor has to chose for optimum nutrition. A regular person can’t do it.
So not only are you starving your body, but you’re starving your cells of necessary things.
SEEK MEDICAL HELP
i agree 1000 calories is not enough, your body burns off 1600 a day just for your organs to function and you need extra calories to be able to do your day to day activities and to go to the gym other wise your body eats at your own muscles including your heart musle.
it is recommeded that for a woman you eat 2000 calories a day so maybe you should think about your own healthy eating and add 3 snackes a day in between you meals.
Exactly.
Ida, I don’t know if anyone told you that eating 1000 calories is a good way to lose weight, but it’s not, nor is it healthy.
The average woman at an average height needs about 1400 calories a day for normal functioning. You’re working out so you should be eating even more, but you’re only eating 1000 calories. Even morbidly obese people who got gastric bypass surgery are put on 1400 calorie diets.
You may feel fine now and not like you’re starving yourself despite eating 1000 calories. That’s because you’re not consuming 1000 calories, you’re still consuming 1400 calories. The body ALWAYS gets how much it needs. Those missing 400 calories now come from your own body (fat stores, organs, bones). 200 of those 400 probably comes from fat stores so you ARE losing weight, but there’s a limit to how much calories you can get from fat stores per day. The other 200 probably comes from your internal organs.
If you continue to do this for a prolonged period, you will start to feel the negative effects of dieting like this. I really think you should consult a doctor or nutritionist to help you lose weight, but in a healthy way. :/
The recommended calorie intake for weight loss is 1200-1300 cals. If you go below that you’re triggering your starvation mode, which in turn slows down your metabolism significantly. I’m trying to stick to 1200, no sugar, no processed food, just mostly veggies and some protein. The weight loss comes off slowly, but at the end of the day it comes off.
i have never heard that before. are you sure 1200-1300 isn’t recommended for short periods of time only as a quick method of shifting weight? i have never heard anything less than 1600 quoted for long term weight loss. these figures are scaring me. my bmi is 19, i exercise 4/5 times a week and cosume 1800-2000 roughly to maintain and go down to about 1600 to lose weight.
i do agree with the day off method, though in my case i tend to just not worry about what i am eating if i am out. so say if i go to the cinema i have ice cream.
That’s what my dietician told me. She also said if I go under 1200 I’ll start losing muscle mass. Of course if you exercise then you need to increase you calorie intake. I also use myfitnesspal.com to record what I eat and it was suggested I eat about 1200 to reach my goal. Of course I’m taking my dietitian’s suggestion and sticking to around 1300.
Either you’re misquoting her, or your dietician should lose her JOB.
1200 calories is what’s recommended…if you’re in a COMA, and you’re 4 feet tall.
I WAS in a coma, and they fed me these 1400 calorie packs through this tube down my nose, since I had this breathing tube down my throat and couldn’t eat.
And I repeat, I was in a COMA.
And I lost so much weight during my hospital stay I looked like something the cat dragged over.
Most women, including petite ones burn about 1400 or more just by sitting in bed all day. Any type of extra movement usually bumps that up to 1600, and if you’re exercising even a bit you’re most likely over 2000.
To lose weight you don’t have to create a deficit by eating less, you have to just exercise more. And more then 1 pound per week is too much, unless you’re obese, and this counts at 300-500 deficit. That means you can safely eat 1800-2000 calories, work out, and lose weight.
kinda have to agree with suzushii. can’t believe any professional would recommend 1300 cals. thats so little food. even if you lust the meals and they sound okay, the minute you add sauce and dressing, your adding another few hundred calories.
i think being overly concerned with calorie counting in general isn’t that healthy, and unless you are literally weighing everything its really hard to know exactly what you are eating. for instance i munch grapes all day- no idea how many calories and don’t really care. they are healthy and yummy ( i insist all my food is yummy!) so however many i eat i figure its not bad for me.
i have been heavier, i used to binge. i don’t need to count every carrot to maintain a lower weight. truth is most of us know where the extra weight is coming from and it isn’t necessary to get this strict to be slim and healthy.
maybe you should get another dietician!
I think I misspoke and am making her look bad. She’s actually wonderful and doesn’t believe in focusing on weight but rather using food for energy. She’s big on being in tune with how certain foods make you feel etc. I was on a 1200 cal diet and she told me that I should at least eat 1300. She really is a great influence and is trying to help move away from obsessing over calories to how does what I eat makes me feel. Sorry for the confusion.
that’s weird because my dietitian said to me that to gain weight, I only had to go up to 1000-1200 calories, and 800-900 calories would keep me at the same weight, while 700 calories would allow me to lose about 2 lbs a month. and i’m 5’4.
REMOVED BY ADMIN* to have been recormended that many calories. i seen a nutritionist and she said to eat 1200 if i want to lose weight and 1500 to maintain it once im finished. im pretty short thou, 157cm and 52kg
Bex, in another comment (that might have gotten deleted(, you say that 2000 calories is too much for a woman. It may be that in your particular case, it is too much. Perhaps, a diet of 1500 really works best for you, since you did see a nutritionist who probably evaluated your specific case and determined that’s what works for you.
But you can’t generalize from your unique case to everybody. The AVERAGE woman should eat 2000 calories. And for the AVERAGE woman, 1200 is way too low and will just lead to muscle loss and metabolism decrease…so the person will just become fatty and shapeless rather than lose weight.
You seem to be out of the norm. As a result, you really can’t talk for everybody. Otherwise, I can say that every woman should eat at least 2500 calories, because that’s what it takes for me to maintain my weight of 105 pounds at 5’4 feet. Clearly, I am a unique case too.
She looked better before, there was no need for the weight loss. She had a glow… and now she lost it. Also, the first picture looks like her natural weight.
no one has a natural weight. each and every one of us can chose the weight we would like if we are willing to make the effort. but you can look better at certain weights. its not a huge difference and she may just fluctuate naturally a little up and down. she definetly is very slim though. the only thing with this kind of low weight is that it will age you quicker. she’ll have to invest in a lot of cosmetic aids to keep a young face!!
She has obviously worked too hard to get slimmer and toned, so I guess she didn’t like her curvier self before. Personally I definetely prefer her body before, when she was curvier, had bigger (obviously natural) boobs and all in all seemed more beautiful (to me). I cant understand why we should all become skinny (and blonde in some cases! check Jessica Alba’s try to transform herself http://www.skinnyvscurvy.com/hollywood-moms/jessica-alba-1-blonde-2-skinny.html).
Anyway, whatever works and makes u feel good for yourself is the best, provided is your own personal opinion and not some other’s…
what??? cant belive people are calling her after picture “NICE AND TONED”
she looks bony, she looked better before “natural thin” now shes just fugly
I agree!
WORD.
I don’t see much difference between then & now. I’ve always found her pretty, whether a bit more toned (in her case I think she looks slightly bony but anyway) or not. Good for her if she’s found the right balance and the right body (no matter how hard it seems to be :s).
There’s one thing that she says which is NOT true, the “control for six days of the week and eat whatever you want on the seventh day”, this does not work because your body is everytime trying to get advisted to the diet you’re imposing to it, and after 6 days it’s like you’re ruining almost a week of work, and it doesn’t like it
Trust me I’ve done that for long and it has never been successful …
I liked her better before
Way better now.
She looks pretty good now, but her face looked better before. I guess you have to compromise when you lose that much weight.
She looked wayyy better before! She was thin but still had breasts and hips and so on.. Now to me she looks just 10 years older and way too thin, the glow she has in the first picture seems to have faded in the second one.
There isn’t a chance she’s eating “everything she wants” once a week, a girl doesn’t look like that when she’s eating enough. Even if you look at old paintings, from the cavemen or just from the renaissance, you can see that the men are big and muscular and the women are curvy and even sometimes bit chubby. That is the way women are built, they are (usually) not supposed to be super skinny. Of course there are a lot of women that are naturally very skinny, but you can see that she obviously isn’t one of them.
I don’t see much of a difference between the two pictures except in the second one she has more muscle tone. To me, it’s nice to see a thin woman taking care of herself even if it means looking thinner rather than being skinny-fat.
She was thin to begin with so she could have gone without working out. But she did make the choice to work out, which I think is a good one because it leads to prolonged health.
she looks better in the before picture. her face looks prettier in that one.
aggree!
She didn’t need to lose any she looked very slim before.
I think she looks better in the first pic IMO.
I don’t see a problem with her diet plan as long as a person doesn’t eat everything in site on day 7. HOWEVER, I know from personal experience if I eat a lot one day it’s hard for me to go back to dieting the next…I start feeling REALLY hungry again. The diet seems to be working for Kristen though.
Every person is different and there’s no one diet that works for everyone.
That’s the same with me. If I eat too much one day, I get really hungry the nest. I also like the first picture, she is a bit thin now.
I’m all for working out and getting fit, but now she seems too bony. her bust shrank too.
that tends to happen when women lose weight
she looks great in both pics but i am leaning towards the “before”
I think she looks better now..But I like the ‘skinny’ look. I think she’s great
Her face is uglier now.Especially the eyes and nose. She is very average ,nothing special about her.
See how thick and healthy her hair was prediet? And how her skin was very glowy, but in a natural and unforced way? She’s unhealthy now. I think that you can usually tell when boniness is not your natural figure. She shouldn’t be trying to maintain such a low weight. It’s obvious that this weight is not where her body wants to be.
I agree, it’s usually not natural for women being so skinny. I’ve also never understood how people can think that super skinny is more beautiful than breasts and hips and bottoms. I think it’s mostly women who prefer the super skinny look, not men.
I like her much more before… still skinny and toned.. but in the right she looks flat chested and slightly emaciated :/
She looked better before, the girl needs to chill out and live a li’l and eat by the looks of that recent pic!
NO ONE should be eating less then a 1200 calorie diet (and 1200 may be to little depending on your current weight and diet).
That’s crazy…doing your body more harm then good.
Gain Weight Too Thin. LOSE the cake face makeup or the makeup artist all together love her but SHES TOO THIN. She was absolutely gorgeous and perfect back in her Laguna Beach years especially her senior year when she got the extensions.
“Are you supporters of the “control 6 days, eat whatever 1 day” diet/lifestyle?”
That is BS. My trainer is so against that. Think about it. You eat healthily for 6 days, and then you eat WHATEVER you want on Day 7. If on Day 7 I decided to eat pizza, cupcakes, soda, etc. I’d totally sabotage the past 6 days. Not to mention it gets your blood sugar all out of whack. I’m all about rewards, but when you hold off like that and let loose that’s ridiculous.
exactly. this is the wrong way! maybe allow yourself one or two treats a week.. but not a whole day of garbage! talk about back tracking!!
I agree, not necessarily in terms of staying thin, but that’s really hard on your body, like said, the blood sugar levels can go crazy, and also it’s very demanding on your digestive system. I’d think there are other downsides as well, though idk. I’ve once done that for some period of time, my stomach wasn’t happy at all, and i felt really sluggish after eating too much sugar etc after 6 days of clean-ish eating. But maybe her eat-all-you-want is still within reason..
I disagree… Last year I wanted to lose some weight… I didn’t eat ANY sugar during the week, even no juice or stuff like that. I had about 1200 calories a day and on weekends (Saturday+Sunday) I ate WHATEVER I wanted… The result was, I never felt better and healthier before! And lost 15 lbs! Of course I was working out, too!
You can’t call trainers “liars”, just because they recommend certain diets… Every trainer has his own method. If someone wants to lose weight, he has to find his own way, which should of course be HEALTHY!!
I thinks she looks her best now. She has done a great job getting her body in shape and she is very toned. Perhaps these are not the best photos of her body now (her abs are covered up), but she really looks beautiful. She should be commended for the work she has done. She really has a perfect body.
I think we need question why a girl with a great body to begin with wanted to look like a stick.
The only thing she should have done is perhaps toned up but it’s not like she needs it…
She looks very thin and her legs look like carrots thanks to the fake tan
i agree!! she looked great and i would not find flaws, but if she really wanted to improve the original body the only thing i would suggest would be to tone the arms a bit!
she has lost her glow and her face looks strained.
why did she want to lose weight? i dont know, obviously, but i remember seeing pics of her a while back (last spring?) on a beach, wearing coverups even though her body was great, and there were models around her. i think it was for some razor promotion or some beach party promotion thing.
anyways, i was upset to read peoples comments on those photos (not this site) saying how she was the “fat” one compared to the models, etc.
the girl has never been fat. lots of ppl dont like her but i always thought that physically she had some kind of “it” factor appeal.
its gone right now.
and this is the result when you don’t have good body to begin with, i mean her legs looked so much better before, and her shoulders look so much wider now that she slimmer.
i’m sorry but if you don’t have good proportions no matter how skinny you are it doesn’t mean you gonna look hot…
she’s an inverted triangle i guess?, maybe that’s way she looked better before
She lost alot of weight. You can especially tell in her face, her nose looks bigger (even though its probably the same size
)
a) I couldn’t tell they were before/after at first.
b) She shouldn’t wear colored lipstick.
c) She’s very, very pretty. I always thought she was prettier than Lauren Conrad (back when I read Seventeen and all they talked about was Laguna Beach
)
I actually don’t see much of a difference….although I like her overall look in the first one better, cute hair!
WOW! You can tell there is a big weight loss there. I would stay at this weight if I were her, no thinner. If she went thinner she wouldn’t look as good but she is very beautiful!
If thats true about her gym and diet (which I bet it is) she should defently keep it up but maybe eat a little bit more. She’s very petite! Looking HAWT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the second kristen better by far, but the first kristen wasn’t bad. She was still skinny but just more curvey.
for those of us who think she looked better before….
doesnt it kinda bug you that Us magazine was asking about her weight loss in the first place? like “ooo please tell us how you got to look so hungry! how can we get the same boney look?”
im not saying she looks bad in the “after” picture (i think she looks better in the before, but still good now) but its funny how weight loss is assumed to be a good thing that we want the “secrets” to even when the person was maybe healthier and happier before the diet. if i were kristen, this kind of fascination with my weight loss would make me feel proud and want to keep losing (which she really shouldnt do!)– after all it gives her fame and attention, and to her it must sound like everyone is jealous!!
She was HOT before. Her body was perfect. I don’t see what she thought was wrong with it.
now her legs are yucky and that tan bleh
your organs do not burn 1600 cals per day just by functioning. if you want to lose weight…fast…then id only go 900…1000 at max…all this talk of 2000 or above 1600 cals? yeh you could eat that…only if your excercising 2 hours a day.
Mim, please do not advise people to consume under 1000 calories / day on this site – those are not healthy diets and this is a PRO healthy website.
Please check this to see the daily caloric needs of a woman:
http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm
No, but for the average person, they do burn anywhere from 1200-1400. A moving person (non-coma) burns 1600. Look it up, none of us are imagining this number.
Like I said, you can eat 1000 calories, or however much you’d like. But your body will still get its 1600 calories. And you can metabolize only so much fat per day…the leftover missing calories will come from muscle and organ tissue. This is why people who starve themselves don’t automatically go to 0% body fat…they start losing muscle tissue too along with fat.
the old one looks so much better. she had a great figure! but now.. it’s too thin I would say.
What was wrong with her before??? She was totally THIN enough before. Now she is starting to look tooo skinny almost gaunt..you can also see a huge difference in her arms and she was already small before AND toned!! I actually think she should and could afford to gain a little(in a healthy way of course)..have you seen her butt in recent photos?? non-existent!
Agreed! She’s getting too thin.. she looks so much more healthier in the yellow dress.
xx
She has no breast ! It’s a pitty.
yea she looks better in the firts picture for me. it looks like she has such small breasts now
i think she looks great now

Before ftw. She looked prettier and healthier. Now her legs are just bones and look pretty awful to me.
