Kate Winslet: “I am exactly the same as I’ve always been”
July 9, 2009 in Kate Winslet, Then and Now by Versus

… and the title refers to her weight. I know, this is the 759th time Kate is talking about her figure – this time it’s in Harper’s Bazaar.
Here are some parts you might find interesting:
Kate hasn’t really gone all shy and retiring on the red carpet. After years of wearing long, she’s more recently taken a short cut — sporting, among others, a curve-loving Hervé Léger and a racy Balmain number. (She’s still legging it today, perched on the couch in a gold Calypso minidress.) “I danced a lot when I was younger, and I’ve always had decent, shapely legs and thought it’s now or never,” she says. “I mean, when you’re pushing 40, are you really going to wander around in a dress that’s midthigh length? So I thought, Oh, f-ck it, I’m just going to do it.”
And so began the thousandth round of Kate Winslet body speculation. “I’ve heard, ‘Oh, she’s toned and she’s lost weight,’ but I am exactly the same as I’ve always been. The one thing that had to go during awards season was exercise. People would say to me, ‘Oh, come on …’ like I was lying about it!” The topic clearly fatigues her. “Some may find it hard to believe it, but I don’t care about that stuff.”
But Oprah Winfrey does, as she proclaimed gloriously to the world when Kate was on her show promoting The Reader — in which her character, former Nazi guard Hanna Schmitz, is often naked — “God bless your real breasts!” Kate shrugs and says, “I’m used to people openly discussing my t-ts. If people are noticing my boobs in a movie and saying they do what real boobs do, then that’s great.” But, like her legs, the boobs have a shelf life. “I’ll be 34 in October. I can’t keep getting away with it. There was so much of it in The Reader because the story required it, but people have seen enough of my bum and my boobs. I have to put them back.”
Sure, Kate has an Oscar, a lauded husband, and two fetching children (Mia, 8, and Joe, 5), but she’s not Gisele. She’s one of us … ish. “Part of the reason Lancôme asked me [to represent the brand] was because I come across as a woman other women can identify with. The media plays such a big role in how women measure themselves against other women, so I can be in a position where I can say beauty comes from within, we’re not all perfect, and the covers of magazines are of course retouched. We do not look like that.” She points to her forehead. “I have wrinkles here, which are very evident, and I will particularly say when I look at movie posters, ‘You guys have airbrushed my forehead. Please can you change it back?’ I’d rather be the woman they’re saying ‘She’s looking older’ about than ‘She’s looking stoned.’”

The left one looks hidious……
I’m pretty sure she’s a bit slimmer in the right hand picture, she has to have lost some weight. Her face looks so much fuller in the first picture, but that might just be because she’s younger. Having said that she looks fuller in the left hand picture, she’s still the same shape, so it’s possibly a terribly unflattering dress more than anything else.
She used to be quite a bit heavier. I understand that she wants to present a healthy image to young girls but she’s obviously in shape now and not overly thin so why not celebrate it instead of denying it?
I think she has a skewed view of herself since it’s obvious she looks thinner now than she did then (maybe not by much, but still).
And thank god for that tan!
maybe she lost about 5 pounds and oned up a bit?
She never said that she is NOT lighter than before, she simply said she wears the same size. I believe her, why would she lie about that? With two kids, I am sure she is way more active chasing them around and what not. She appears to be more toned for sure. When I was in college, I gained the usual freshman 15, but remained the same size in clothes, it just didn’t look the same on me…obviously because I wasn’t in as good of shape. Now I hear, “oh my God, you’ve lost sooo much weight!” When actually, I am just back to my normal weight, but still wearing the same clothes. They just look really good on me now! Regardless, I think she is a great role model for women, and she doesn’t bullshit around. I respect her a lot.
She was SO young in the first picture. I believe that was before Titanic even. She still had some baby fat in the face, and on her arms. Lots of people have that. My best friend, (sorry Jill) had baby fat until she was in her early 20′s! Crazy. She was always cute, but now she is a sexy lady and all grown up- well 25 lol isn’t that old at all…you know what I mean. Kate is just grown up now and a toned. I agree with dani.
She is such a beautiful and elegant woman.
“it’s not baby fat it’s just fat baby”
sorry couldn’t resist i forget where that line is from
She looks good on the right and I think the picture on the left is pretty old. I’m annoyed that she denies really working out for it though. In some article around Oscar time, she said she does a pilates DVD when she gets a chance.. but she really downplayed that. She was a little heavier before Revolutionary Road and the Reader too. Definitely not as thin as she is now. Sorry, I just get annoyed with people who down own up to how much they actually work out.
i don’t care whether shes like on the right picture or left one. shes awesome! pretty gorgeous!
I agree! I’ve always been a fan. She has a very “real” look. She is such a natural beauty, and it’s true, she has a look that women can relate to!
Pushing 40 at 33 — somehow I think her idea of “close” is a little mixed up. And yes, I am indeed sick of her weight talks, but she does look a lot better in the 2nd picture than the one on the left.
I think she meant she had to wear those miniskirts now BEFORE she is close to her 40´s.
I believe she´s the same size as she has always been. I don´t think she meant that she had never lost or gained weight. I am always been this size I am now, but there have been periods when I was 10 pounds heavier for a moment or 10 pounds lighter for a moment. But this weight I am now has always been my “real” weight if I eat at normal way and exercise. I propably would also say I´m always been this way, since those short times out of this weight weren´t the normal weight for me.
but yeah, she is definetely more toned.
its possible she hasn’t lost any weight per se….she just toned up, and muscle weighs more than fat, so it may appear to her that nothing is changed. Also, I have to agree with the previous posters that she is very young in the first picture, and we all know that our bodies don’t stay the same as we age. She clearly lost all the baby fat in her face, so that makes her appear quite a bit thinner. Either way, she looks good. Even now she represents a healthy body image for other young women.
She looks like a real mature woman now. Healthy, toned and very womanly. She was much younger in the first picture and probably her face looked chubby only because of that.
The first picture kind of looks like she is going to goth prom…
ohh common that’s not possible at all, she obviously lost some weight and looks amazing, not skinny kind of perfect for her body, so why not celebrate her amazing figure instead of deniying her weight lost
Looking beyond bad lighting in the first picture and a tan in the second one, I think she’s probably telling the truth. She doesn’t look much slimmer in the second photo, just more toned and in a dress that doesn’t cling in the wrong places.
I agree! I think the picture on the left is just bad and unflattering. I would guess that she probably weighs about the same in the picture on the right she is just maybe more toned up as well as tan, more cleaned up, and in a more flattering dress.
Oh come on!! Are you kidding? She lost weight, toned up, sported a sexier dress and yes!! Even her nose is thinner!!! Blonded up the hair, spray tanned herself, she looks total Hollywood but so what?
Get real! I love her too, but she is not one of us.. she is an Actress!!
