Seriously, they are closer to tights than to pants.

I think leggings are ok if:

- you are going to the gym / running in the park

- you are wearing them with a longer top / tunic on the street.

Not so much when wearing them with a jacket that is long enough everywhere else, just not in the back, thus revealing your booty till its smallest details.
