Skinny VS Curvy

We’ve had lots of requests to feature high-fashion model Coco Rocha – the reason? The Canadian beauty apparently lost a visible amount of weight in the past years.

Back in 2008, when Coco was allegedly 108 pounds at 5’10″ / 50 kg at 178 cm, she received criticism for looking ‘too curvy’ for the runway and advices such as “You need to lose more weight.  The look this year is anorexic.  We don’t want you to be anorexic. We just want you to look like you are.” To these harsh remarks, she replied:

“Last season I took diuretic pills. Once I took so many on an empty stomach that I was doubled over for hours. That’s the last time I ever did something so terrible to my body. No one wants to be caught with that photo ‘Model Eats Cake’” — and to make their fit models, and therefore their sample sizes, bigger — models are humiliated when zippers won’t zip up at castings.

In 2010, she said:

“You know what, I’ve stopped caring. If I want a hamburger, I’m going to have one. No 21-year-old should be worrying about whether she fits a sample size.”

23 year-old model Coco Rocha, who began modeling at the age of 14 and was told that she was both ‘too fat’ and ‘too thin’, recently shared her thoughts on why more and more young models are having body image issues and eating disorders:

‘That’s where girls have their issues. Why am I changing: they’re not told: “You’re supposed to change, you’re supposed to get hips and boobs and you’re supposed to turn into a woman.”

‘Instead they believe I need to stick as this thin girl that I’ve been all my life so that I can continue on working, and they don’t understand that it is actually normal and it is OK.’

… says Coco.

Another perfectly lean model says that she’s having trouble finding jobs, now that she is a size 4 (models sizes 0-2 are OK, and so are the ones over 12, just, for some inexplicable reason I will never understand, sizes 4-10 are not OK). Details from The New York times:

“I’m not in demand for the shows anymore,” said the model, who has worked for Marc Jacobs, Prada, Chanel, Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier and Louis Vuitton, among many others.

“I’ve been told to lose weight when I was really skinny,” said Ms. Rocha, who recently added a new line item to her résumé: correspondent for Modelinia.com, the Web site for the model-obsessed.

“You know what, I’ve stopped caring,” Ms. Rocha said. “If I want a hamburger, I’m going to have one. No 21-year-old should be worrying about whether she fits a sample size.”

“Girls are told they’re not skinny enough, or they hear, ‘She’s old, she’s boring, we’ve had her, she’s not tiny anymore,’ ” Ms. Rocha said. “A lot of people don’t take into account the vulnerability of these young girls.” And the latest crop of models is not made up of “adults or even sort-of adults,” she insisted. “They are children. Point closed.”
