73 year-old actress Jane Fonda recently opened up to Harper’s Bazaar about her troubled past with body image issues and eating disorders – here’s what she has to say:
Body image, the 1950s, and Henry Fonda: “I was raised in the ’50s,” she explains. “I was taught by my father that how I looked was all that mattered, frankly. He was a good man, and I was mad for him, but he sent messages to me that fathers should not send: Unless you look perfect, you’re not going to be loved.”
She was a fanatic for exercise, and she battled bulimia for decades: “I wasn’t very happy from, I would say, puberty to 50? It took me a long time. It was in my 40s, and if you suffer from bulimia, the older you get, the worse it gets. It takes longer to recover from a bout. I had a career, I was winning awards, I was supporting nonprofits, I had a family.” One day she just stopped. “I had to make a choice: I live or I die.” She refocused, trying to “fill that empty space with something.” Then came the workouts. “Gloria Steinem said empowerment begins in the muscles.”
Vanities: “I’m vain. My arms are thin, but I’m vain about loose flesh. And so I’m careful that what I wear will show off my best parts, which are my waist and my butt.” That said, “I have people in my life who will say, ‘Honey, you’re trying too hard.’ I like being saucy, but I’m 73 and a half. I’m still trying to find my way between matronly and coltishness. Colt, not cult: C-O-L-T.”
… says Jane.

July 6, 2011 in Beauty & Body Image, Celebrity Quotes, Kim Cattrall by Versus

Kim Cattrall, a member of the hot & fabulous over 50 club brings today’s quote:
“I think the scrutiny of women is obscene. If you don’t do anything, you’re like an old hag; and if you do, you’re a plastic surgeon ‘victim’. Where can we go to age with respect and dignity? People won’t let us, particularly in America. It’s just so cruel.”
“I’m not Barbie, I’m not made by Mattel, I’m flesh and blood and it melts you know – get used to it. I’m not going to turn myself into the Joker in ‘Batman’ to get jobs. It’s hard getting older – especially for an attractive woman, because your looks are something that were on your side – but you need to put in perspective.”
… says Kim.

June 25, 2011 in Beauty & Body Image, Celebrity Quotes, LeAnn Rimes by Versus
LeAnn Rimes, who is frequently criticised for being ‘too skinny’, is very outspoken when it comes to body image issues - and she recently published an article on her website where she discusses the topic:
“Imagine – your dad, who you idolize, walks into your bathroom one morning. You’re in the 11th grade. He lovingly asks you, ‘When are you going to take care of yourself and lose some weight?’ He doesn’t mean anything by it other than, ‘I love you and want to see you happy and healthy.’ But he didn’t exactly say that. In your young mind, he said what all of the other girls in school say to a beautiful, normal girl—’You’re fat.
I could tell you a similar story, in one way or another, about each and every one of my girlfriends. And I bet a lot of you can too. We could probably say the same story about girls we’ve never even met. Would you then think before you spoke? We are all made with the design for our bodies to change in many different ways as our lives unfold.

22 year-old British model Daisy Lowe (who is allegedly 5’10” and 125 pounds) has a little body image quote for you:
‘It’s taken me seven years to get to the point where I can be comfortable with not being as thin as the rest of them.’
‘The public can say, “It’s really cool that you’re not conforming to this anorexic ideal”, but then I still have to go and stand next to all of the other girls. ‘I’m not saying that I am big, but when you stand next to a beanpole, you’re going to look like a massive tree trunk.
‘Literally, it’s only in the past six months that I’ve come to terms with it. Before then…it was hard. I used to have private meltdowns all the time.’

23 year-old singer Adele, who has said in the past that she is ‘happy with her weight, loves fine foods and hates the gym’ supposedly canceled her latest tour because she was told to shed some pounds. Let’s see the story via Star:
Officially, it was laryngitis that forced Adele to cancel her recent North American tour. But Star has learned exclusively that it’s not the British singer’s throat that’s bruised – it’s her confidence!
“Shortly after she landed in LA in early May, an executive for her label told her she needs to lose weight,” a source tells Star. “And that really devastated her.”
Although a very talented singer, Adele, 23, suffers from extreme panic attacks. And performing in front of increasingly larger crowds has made the condition worse. She’s told friends she’s gotten so nervous on stage, her throat would literally close up. “The pressure on Adele… has been immense,” says the source. “She was sitting in her hotel room in Santa Monica on her own, crying.”
The added pressure placed on her because of her weight has only made her more anxious and uncomfortable. “Adele sees herself as just a normal girl from London, and she felt bullied and like a fish out of water in LA. She just wanted to go home,” the source tells Star.
