J.Lo looked the best IMO. And the worst was Kristen Stewart.
I think J.lo’s Gucci dress is perfect but she ruins it with that floral shrug.
I think it is part of the dress.. But yeah, I liked Jennifer’s dress the most and I thought Karolina Kurkova and Lucy Liu’s dresses were the worst.
Exactly! Karolina Kurkova look awful here!
favorites:
Madonna
Liv Tyler
Zoey Saldana
Sarah Jessica Parker
Christina Ricci
Gisele Bundchen
Ginnifer Goodwin
Diane Kruger
Mary Kate Olsen
Evan Rachel Wood
Kristen Stewart
Least favorites:
Naomi Campbell
Christina Hendricks
Rihanna
Kirsten Dunst
Also, I expected so much more of Lucy Liu, her dress was terrible.
i like the look:
ashley olsen
taylor swift
christina ricci
Blake Lively
salma hayek
Diane Kruger
dress of Nicole richie
i hate the look:
kristen stewart
Liv tayler
Iman
Beyonce
Rihanna( except the shoes)
do you guys think rene zellweger looks healthy???cause i dont….!Is it only me?
I think she looks scrawny, and has been that way since she started losing weight after the first Bridget J. She was pretty skinny in Jerry McQuire and Nurse Betty too, and toned, but never seemed that way to me. Maybe it was her chubby face. And of course the softer, more elastic skin of a younger person. So perhaps it’s just aging, but i think also the yoyoing has taken a toll on her, plus i don’t think she was quiiite this skinny back then. All in all, i can’t be sure of her health but she’d look better to me with some more lbs on her.
I think she does look healthy, slim and toned.
She has always been like that, except when she gained weight for movie roles.
I quite like Ginnifer’s dress, it’s a bit 80s in a bad way but i dig the color and the general vibe. Also liking Christina H’s dress. A bunch of others looked really pretty too with great dresses.
I hate JLo’s dress (at least on her), the color, the poofiness, her make-up with it. Madonna is giving me an Evita feeling, the dress is ok but she looks a tad meh.. to me in it. Another dislike, Iman, who normally looks so stunning.
jessica alba looks soo pretty
They really really like gold this year
Seems quarter of the dresses are gold.
I still think Miranda is one of the best. Kate Hudson looks glowing and soo pretty, though the dress is only okay. CH’s dress isn’t the best, but her face and hair look amazing.
Does Jessica Alba put some shiny thing on her skin?! Her skin is always super glowing, and makes her look amazing and healthy every single time.
Did anyone see Crystal Renn? She looked straight size model skinny: http://gofugyourself.com/fug-and-fab-and-more-fug-models-at-the-met-ball-05-2011/alexander-mcqueen-savage-beauty-costume-institute-gala-at-the-metropolitan-museum-of-art-arrivals-13
You can see other models there as well, imo Brooklyn Decker, Angela Lindvall and Karlie Kloss looked really good too.
Oh and did anyone see Rosie? She looked stunning, though once again, not a huge fan of the dress. I guess if you’re beautiful enough you can look good in anything
Here’s a pic:

And i think this one with her getting out/in to the car, looks beautiful, it could be an ad

i LOOOVVEE renee’s dress maybe a different color for her because it blends too much with her skin. but her dress hit the sweet spot for me. and miranda kerr’s too just maybe a different color.
other dress i liked:
sarah jessica Parker
ashley greene
emma roberts & Ginnifer goodwin (love cutout dresses)
salma hayek
elizabeth banks
taylor swift and liv tylers are nice too. seems to be missing something though.
dress that made me go wtf:
Iman
kristen dunst’ looked like a grandmas dress
lucy lui
beyonce knowles
karolina karakova
christina ricci
michelle williams
naomi campbell
I’ve never in my life seen so many awful dresses at ONE gala! :O
I know! Except for one or two, the rest are horrendous. Some look absolutely ridiculous, to the point of laughable, but then again I’m not sure I understand the theme…
That was my thought exactly, especially after looking through the Daily Mail’s coverage of the event. I cannot understand what some of them were thinking. Having said that, a few looked pretty good.
Geesh. How many birds died for this party? A lot of feathers.
My top five in no particular order:
-Madonna: *itch definitely has taste. Love the colour.
-Jennifer Hudson: take a good look at this dress. A gorgeous ball gown.
-Emma Roberts: how to do minimalism part 1.
-Emma Stone: how to do minimalism part 2.
-Ashley Greene: needs to be pulled up at the bust, but I love the detailing of this dress.
+Honorable Mention to J Lo for colour.
The rest range from meh to WTF.
Some other thoughts:
-Salma Hayek: has she lost weight or is her head really that big?
-Renee Z: reminds me of one of those flayed models of the human body that show all the muscles.
i think they’re all gorgeous, and btw, there were many more interesting gowns, it’s sad they weren’t posted here.
Versus, could you maybe do a post with Nina Dobrev’s cover and pictures from Seventeen Fitness Magazine?
Thanks for a great site btw!
No Mila Kunis? She definitely lost weight from the weight she regained from losing weight…does that makes sense? But she looked amazing.
Gwyneth & Christina do not look good here at all. Emma Stone reminds me of Lindsay Lohan when she was 12!
Oh my god, Lea is smiling?! That’s a first on the red carpet. Except once again, she chooses dresses made out of terrible fabrics. It’s just too stiff.
Favorites:
Evan Rachel Wood
Michelle Williams
Madonna (surprise!)
Ginnifer Goodwin (She looked like a sexy pixie or something)
Jennifer Lopez
Zoë Saldana (love that color on her.. I really love Calvin Klein’s stuff lately)
Elizabeth Banks
Miranda Kerr (it’s very quirky but she pulls it off well, especially because she’s so thin and tall. She looks really good in clothes.)
I liked Christina Ricci’s dress (what a statement!) but I didn’t like the hair so she wasn’t one of my favorites. Same goes for Sarah Jessica Parker. I wish Alisha Keys had taken off the jacket. Beyonce looked good but she couldn’t even walk up the stairs!
Worst:
Rihanna
Kate Hudson (her hair. erlack)
Ashley Olsen
Naomi Campbell
Demi Moore
Taylor Swift
Lucy Liu
Ashley Greene (She had to have someone position it to be photographed. That’s too fussy. Plus it kind of washed her out.)
Jessica Szohr (what the hell are those shoes? And the hemline was way too short for that event)
Karolina Kurkova
Blake Lively
Liked Emma Stone and Emma Robert’s , liked Ginnfer’s….Madonnas, Ashley Olsens
disliked- most of the rest, j lo’s , Renee esp oh and behind in one of the pics you can see MK Olsen-eck!
My favourites in no particular order:
Emma Stone
Miranda Kerr
Jessica Alba
Taylor Swift
Ashley Greene
Maggie Gyllenhaal (I love everything she does!)
I hated most of the rest. Some of them were particularly revolting. But I guess I’m biased because I hate cut-out dresses and hate gold with black.
The worst of the worst were:
Beyonce
Naomi Campbell
Lucy Lui
Jessica Szohr
Rihanna
Ginnifer Goodwin
Liv Tyler
Iman
Kristen Stewart (pretty much hate everything she ever wears)
Karolina Kurkova
Christina Hendricks
J. Lo
The only ones who looked good were Diane Kruger and Liv Tyler. Although kudos to the rare few who bothered to dress in theme.
Blake Lively, again you’ve astounded with me how tacky you can be. Please, just go away.
What was the theme?
Alexander McQueen
I think the majority of these dresses look ridiculous and can’t understand what compels these people to wear such busy and hideous ensembles.
I like what Emma Roberts and Emma Stone wore. It’s elegant and fresh. I like the style of dress Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwyneth Paltrow wore because it’s simple and flattering (although it doesn’t look fitted enough of GP).
The people are meant to dress extravagantly, it is the COSTUME institute gala after all. From wiki, “known as the Met Ball and nicknamed the “Oscars of the East Coast”, is an annual ball that celebrates the annual opening of the Metropolitan Museum’s (The Met) fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute.[1][2] The red carpet evening where celebrities arrive dressed to impress is described as the fashion industry’s “Night of Nights”.[3] Fashion industry experts and style magazines consider the event, which is hosted by Vogue to be the fashion world’s best red carpet event.[2] It is regarded as the top annual social event in New York City.[4] The event has been an annual affair at the Met since 1948 (the year in which the Costume Institute was founded), but it has been held in different parts of the museum over the years.[5]”
Each year there is a theme- this year it was savage beauty, alexander mcqueen. Hence why the dresses should be busy, if not hideous. The ones who are dressed ‘simple’ avoided the theme because there too worried about ended up on peoples ‘worst dressed list’, yet those lists are compiled by people who don’t get the meaning of the night. Fashion is meant to be fun and frivolous, not always about being refined and ‘flattering’. That being said, tacky and slutty should always be a no no!
“Slutty” is a subjective and offensive judgement, not a look that one wears.
Each to their own, but I personally think someone can ‘look’ slutty, whether it be through what they wear, or how they wear it. Of course I’m not saying what they look like is indicative of their behaviour, but from an aesthetic point of view, theirs a difference between dressing for attention (Blake Lively, Tara Reid) (ie- frontal sexuality) as opposed to exuding a mysterious and subtle sexiness without exposure or tacky poses (Jennifer Connelly).
Yes, they can “look slutty”, but that’s s judgement being made by the person who’s viewing the person. It’s not an intrinsic aspect of an outfit or a person.
You also say “I’m not saying what they look like is indicative of their behaviour” but the word slut *is* a behavioural term, and I would challenge you to find anyone that doesn’t have behavioural connotations for it.
Either way, it’s a really demeaning word and it’s horribly sad when women use it to put each other down.
You’re entitled to your opinion, but you seem to be insinuating i’m a particular kind of person based on one small passing comment. I didn’t intentionally use it in a disparaging way. All I said at the end was “That being said, tacky and slutty should always be a no no!” It wasn’t a deliberate or spiteful nor a direct insult- it was merely a passing comment that actually had no real relevance to the rest of my post (yet it was all you seemed to take from it). I’m sorry if you took offence to it, but if you read into everything like this (ie IMO overreact) you need to work on your sensitivity issues. Try not to be so serious about things that you read over the internet, because chances are people aren’t taking the tone that you might think they are.
I just reacted to that word because it has such a strong meaning. I think the fact you used it in such an unintentional way says more about the insidiousness of slut-shaming and female-to-female snark than anything else. It wasn’t an attack on you particularly, it was an attack on that word. I hate it so much how women using each other’s sexuality to bring each other down. It makes me really sad. Particularly because there’s nothing wrong with being overtly sexual or sexually experienced, or whatever “slut” is supposed to mean anyway.
ok, I usually don’t post comments on here but wtf are some of the black women wearing?!
Zoe- boring dress from head to toe (and this is coming from someone who’s favorite color is yellow)
Iman- wearing what looks like a reject jumpsuit from the 80s; hate the hair color
Rihanna- wearing what looks like a reject dress from the 90s; hate the hairstyle
Jennifer Hudson- not too bad, but I just think there’s too much gray, though I like the design
Naomi Campbell- :O?!
Beyonce- I’m not quite sure why…but I really like it:)
Even now that I know the theme, I don’t want to change any of my list. Savage beauty isn’t the opposite of simplicity. Savage, in my understanding, is a bit like Tyra Banks’ use of the word “fierce” and I think some of them did look fierce. But most of them just looked hideous, as if they had added every accessory and appendage to their outfits as possible. Savage doesn’t have to be messy or ugly or even over the top. It just has to command attention. Simplicity can still do that.
You’re forgetting about the Alexander Mcqueen part of the theme. Nothing about Alexander McQueen is/was simple.
Of course. But McQueen’s designs don’t suit everyone and a lot of people clearly forgot this – or didn’t choose a design of his that was better for their shape/attitude/colouring, etc. Compare, for example, Fergie and Miranda Kerr. The former looked weird (but the dress was stunning) and the latter looked stunning (even though the dress was weird in a fabulous way).
Also, a lot of the uglier creations weren’t even McQueen designs. Christina Hendricks (oh dear, and I normally love her choices!) was wearing Carolina Herrera, I think, and that was not good news at all.
And for the record, I am normally a huge McQueen fan. I adore almost everything he created. But since his death, the designers have been erring more often than he did (IMO, of course).
This I actually agree with you on (for the most part)! Particularly the last bit!
Couldn’t Ashley Olsen find smaller shoes? o0
Guys,,, the theme was to pay homage to Alexander Mcqueen combined with “Savage beauty”. So I believe that this event was meant for the celebrities to go a littile outside of the box, outside of their comfort zone.
So many of them just had plain simple dresses. Some beautiful, some gorgeus but the majority of them not suited with the theme.
And some did a great job. J. Lo. knocked it out of the park, same did Karolina Kurkova. That was the point ,to be outrageous, but stylish. Christina Ricci was also great, Iman beautiful. SJP, Demi Moore,Liv Tyler,Beyonce,Miranda and even Zoey( the simplicity of the dress combined with her features makes it savage ).. they all dared and succeded.
I disliked Lucy Liu, because it did not flatter her body at all, Leighton’s for the same reason. Kirsten Dunst and Stewart dressed like they were 40 at a luncheon or somethn’// but my biggest dislike was Fergie. I donno, but it was so bad for her..
I apologise if I stepped on anyone’s toes..
I agree about Fergie. The shoulders and the boobs didn’t look right with that dress.
so uninspired by all these dresses!! whats with fashion at the moment, it’s awful, everything seems to be harking back to the 90′s in a really tacky way. from silky material of maddonas dress and the terrible cut of kristen stewart and that terrible metalic dress that kristen bell wore looks like something that was worn to a millenium party! i knew i wouln’t like the oriental trend when i first heard about it and beyonces dress has made me hate it even more, what a terrible neck line!karolina kurakovas monstrosity is unmentionable, is she actually in fancy dress?
On a good note i quite likes eva mendes, the dress colour was stunning and ashley green looked fab too.
Overall though what a dissapointment!
I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!
oh wowwww i actually REALLY like this, so unique…make up not so sure and the top doesnt fit well but I looove the spandex underneath, i want them!!
LOVE
madonna’s dress was very age appropriate
ashley olsen looked really dramatic and the dress was interesting..i could take it without the huge sleeves though
jessica alba looked gorgeous (big surprise)
kate hudson looked cute and the whole look fit her personality
christina ricci had a really interesting dress but i think it worked for her..also dramatic
beyonce’s dress would be better without that turtleneck part..it also looks like its too tight or something
miranda kerr looked cute
sarah jessica parker’s dress was nice but i don’t know if it was great for her
the only look i REALLY hated was rihanna’s…i do not know WHAT she did to her hair but it looked stupid
Karolina Kurkova, Lucy Liu, Beyonce, Kirsten Dunst, Naomi Campbell, Sarah Jessica Parker and Fergie looked awful!!
ahhh so liv tyler was the one leaving all those little white threads all over the red carpet.
Favorites:
Gwyneth Paltrow (always, love her genuine smile, such a great accessory)
Jennifer Hudson
Emma Stone
Miranda Kerr (the very best IMO, best she’s ever looked to me)
Kate Hudson (radiant)
Taylor Swift
Zoe Saldana (the cut of the dress is plain but she and the color are so distinctive!)
JLo for the color
Could use some help:
Kristen Stewart (WTF?)
Salma Hayek’s dress color
Kirsten Dunst (always strikes me as dressing kind of bag lady-ish)
the Mad Men woman looks a little reptilian to me
Fergie
Beyonce (usually I LOVE her style)
Blake Lively (again, usually I love her style. The red hair doesn’t work for me either)
And others too were just a little off kilter, I guess that’s the point though (in a way) of the ball.
faves – madonna, gwyneth paltrow, JLO, ashley olsen, emma roberts, elizabeth banks, taylor swift, diane kruger, miranda kerr
dislikes – lea michele, kristen stewart, kirsten dunst, rihanna, michelle williams, christina ricci, lucy liu, karolina kurkova, christina hendricks
Am I the only one who thinks Rihanna looks amazing ! Her body , her hair , her dress , her shoes ..
And WOW .. Rene Zellweger looks perfect!
Evan Mendes looked beautiful.
i can’t believe how lame this year’s costume gala was. the dresses were horrific.
does anyone know the theme for this year?
I think they need to keep pointless celebs out and only invite those that are fashionable. this was yikes. and zoe who usually is a fav of mine was sooooo boooooooring.
