Scarlett Johansson Fights Back on Weight Loss Rumours
April 15, 2009 in Scarlett Johansson by Versus

Scarlett Johansson has been bombed with “crash diet” & “dramatic weight loss” rumours in the past weeks, so she decided to offer an elaborate response to all this “utter lunacy”. Here’s what she says:
While training for an upcoming film, I’ve come to this conclusion: chin ups are near impossible and lunges suck. There is no magic wand to wave over oneself to look good in a latex catsuit. Eating healthy and getting fit is about commitment, determination, consistency and the dedication to self-preservation. While I’ve never been considered a gym rat, I have, in fact, worked up a sweat in the name of cardio before, and although I enjoy a grilled cheese as much as the next person, I combine the not-so-good foods I crave with an all-around balanced diet.
People come in all shapes and sizes and everyone has the capability to meet their maximum potential. Once filming is completed, I’ll no longer need to rehash the 50 ways to lift a dumbbell, but I’ll commit to working out at least 30 minutes a day and eating a balanced diet of fruit, vegetables and lean proteins. Pull ups, crunches, lunges, squats, jumping jacks, planks, walking, jogging and push ups are all exercises that can be performed without fancy trainers or gym memberships. I’ve realized through this process that no matter how busy my life may be, I feel better when I take a little time to focus on staying active. We can all pledge to have healthy bodies no matter how diverse our lifestyles may be.
Since dedicating myself to getting into “superhero shape,” several articles regarding my weight have been brought to my attention. Claims have been made that I’ve been on a strict workout routine regulated by co-stars, whipped into shape by trainers I’ve never met, eating sprouted grains I can’t pronounce and ultimately losing 14 pounds off my 5′3″ frame. Losing 14 pounds out of necessity in order to live a healthier life is a huge victory. I’m a petite person to begin with, so the idea of my losing this amount of weight is utter lunacy. If I were to lose 14 pounds, I’d have to part with both arms. And a foot. I’m frustrated with the irresponsibility of tabloid media who sell the public ideas about what we should look like and how we should get there.
The concept of ‘Stars Are Just Like Us!” makes us feel connected to lifestyles that can sometime seem out of this world. Yes, celebrities are just like us. They struggle with demons and overcome obstacles and have annoying habits and battle vices. That said, I would be absolutely mortified to discover that some 15-year-old girl in Kansas City read one of these “articles” and decided she wasn’t going to eat for a couple of weeks so she too could “crash diet” and look like Scarlett Johansson.

Scarlett Johansson is amazing. What a good role model.
She is an amazing role model! at last a celebrity that doesnt say “im natrualy thin, i eat all the time” Whilst looking like an emaciated ethiopian. i dont think celebritys realise wat they do to young girls with theyre crash diets and size 0 frames, its sad because these young girls really look up to them. scarlett should be celebrated for fighting back against the size 0 trend and just being a normal sized woman not a bobble head with fake boobs, good on her!
luv her!
she probably is a size 0 now, but whatever.
I dont understand why celebs (not scarlett) insist on telling us that they are naturally thin, when they clearly aren’t. Do they think it makes them look more impressive? or is it because they know they will be judged harshly if everyone found out the truth??
I don’t think she’s a size 0…… maybe 4, 6 tops.
I don’t think she’s lost too much weight, maybe like 5 pounds. But she does look more fit now since she’s exercising. She looks great!
it’s great that she isn’t changing her body just to be beautiful because she looks good the way she is. like she said people come in all shapes and sizes and it’s sad that women have to change themselves or do dangerous things to their bodies by either starving or getting plastic surgery just to feel pretty when we should love who we are whether we’re skinny, curvy, or big.
Good for her. I’m not a fan, but she’s obviously smarter than other hollywood trannies.
BLOODY WELL SAID SCARLETT!!!!!! At last someone who says it like it should be. Eating healthily and a decent, but not ridiculously gruelling, excercise regieme is the best way to be in great shape. I’d tried every sort of diet in my life through my teens and early 20′s and whenever I stopped them I’d pile it all back on and a little extra, until eventually I weighed 220lbs!! I moved to Australia for a year in 2006 and their attitude to food and excercise is like Miss Johansson. Ever since I’ve slowly but steadily lost weight and am now down to 140lbs. I’m so glad a Hollywood star is sending out the right signal – finally!!!!!!
God bless her for setting a good example and being a REAL person in Hollywood.
The two photos compare her on a relaxed day and in evening wear with shapewear underneath. I don’t think she’s lost that much weight, to be honest. She still looks fab.
and there she said it! I totally believe what she said. she never falled to all that skinny crazyness, she always was herself and will always be. she is just being a little bit healthier and dedicated than usual. and who wouldn’t want to look great in a latex suit?? go scarlett!
Poor girl and to all other girls trying to lose weight for no matter what reason. The world is so unfair whenever anyone tries to lose weight. Whether it is for their health, looks, movie role, personal reasons, it doesn’t matter. The tabloids and people on this site should be saying good job, instead of always concluding that the star lost the weight unhealthily or is anorexic. She had to take in a lot of criticism to write someone well moving like above.
Sorry, I do not agree. she is fugly with a oversized head. Like a freakign bobble doll. GROSS!!
lol…she does kinda look like a bobble doll…then again I’m kinda bobble-dollish too because of my narrow shoulders making my head look bigger…I don’t find her face all that attractive, but she does have a really awesome figure, her proportions are excellent for someone who claims not to diet or work out.
I’m glad that she paints a realistic picture on weight loss. If it took you 5 years to get heavy it’s not gonna come off in 5 weeks!
I think she has a fab figure!
In response to those that say celebs claim to be naturally slim I wouldn’t be too sceptical.
My younger sister eats like a pig and she still maintains her 5″9 UK size 8 figure!
You have to remember that a lot of celebs are chosen for their natural shape/size/looks. Of course it is evident that some go to extreme unhealthy lengths to stay slim but others may be able to chow down without any problems.
The media stirs so much we can never really tell!
The pictures above aren’t the best to compare against each other. In the first picture, she’s at a poor angle, isn’t standing up straight, and she’s not wearing the most flattering pair of shorts in the world (I’m not criticizing by the way, I wear unflattering clothes all the time when I want to be comfortable that day) In the second picture, she’s at a nice angle, she’s posing, and that dress fits her perfectly. I think she has lost some weight, but not 14 pounds. A great interview, by the way. She seems like a very intelligent girl.
