Rachel Zoe – Scary Skinny in a Bikini

Rachel Zoe and her husband were spotted yesterday morning on the beach in St. Barts – and as we expected, Rachel looks very, very thin in a bikini (well, in a bikini bra). Of course, her position accentuates her thinness even more and also, her upper half is definitely skinnier than her bottom half.
I hope she is (will get) healthy!

I don’t understand why everyone admires her style- to me it looks cheap and has not an ounce of creativity.

i think rachel is a pear and to make up for her weight she carries in her bottom half she gets EXtremely skinny from her waist up as if to take away from the bottom half……she never wear mini skirts, or dresses with bare leg, and every picture of her in a bikini she covers the bottom half. that is just my opinion
You could be right. And maybe she is striving for a thinner/tighter face as well, which isn’t happening.
I think this may be right and I can kind of see her way of thinking, though she’s took it to the extreme. I’m also a pear, and a good dress size or two different between my upper and lower half. At my lowest weight I had dang good legs but I was really skinny on top. So I gained weight, and am now toning my legs. Yes they’re big still but they do look better.
I have skinny chest syndrome as well – just not as bad as that. And I know that if I gain weight, it won’t go there- well, not until I gain like 10pounds +.
I do feel for her and how she gets better. The skinniness ages her, if she was at a healthy weight I believe she could be really pretty.
She reminds me of Gillian McKeith. Both look like they have been dieting a little too much.

I really believe this is an example of when you can say someone doesn’t look healthy. Usually you get jumped on and people say that weight doesn’t always determine health but here lets face it its not healthy. Isn’t she still in her thirties?

I vaguely remember reading she is 35 a couple of years ago, so she must be like 37 now.
She does seem nice in her show, I understand her job courages her to be thin, she wants to wear whatever she wants and look good in them. Watching her show, you can tell she is in love with clothes, and she would do anything to have them. but the way she looks is really sad.
I guess she studied psychology in collage, I wonder why she can’t see her problem.
I remember on one of the episodes of her show, she was going on about how she disliked her body–after meeting with natalia vodianova–wishing she looked like her in a dress (but who wouldn’t) I don’t know, but she seems like a OCD workaholic who doesn’t take care of herself mentally, emotionally, or physically. . .
It’s Subjective vs. Objective. No one can really see objectively who they are. They are too close to the situation.

Ever since i saw this picture on some other site I knew I’d find it here too….I’ve never seen a chest lke that. Maybe her bones are prominent but she still is scarry skinny…This is how you’re skin looks if you dont’t exercise, like it’s starting to melt

She did state that food isnt really a priority in her life, that she can go the whole day and then be like “oh, i forgot to eat today” and that often she just eats half a grapefruit and drinks alot of coffee.

Wow, that’s kind of wild. I know I get cranky as all hell when I haven’t eaten but I get lowblood sugar. I’d rather just be fat and happy.
amen. there is an eternity to be this thin- it’s known as being dead in a coffin. having suffered from and ed for sooo long there is something that i try to remind myself of whenever i start to loathe any sort of flesh on my b ones: imagine an animal, your pet, starving, bones protruding…would that be desirable? sexy? powerful? no. we all would probably be worried to death about it – so why can’t we, women especiall, deserve to be well-fed and healthy?

I’m in my final stage of ED recovery (by myself, nobody knows I still have it), and I know that I made it when I tell myself “thank God I never went this far!”. I find it sad and terrifying, and I hope she gets better because we both know what the hell of an ED is like! Get well Zoe
I’ve read the same thing. And i watched an episode of the show where she said she just can’t get anything other than soup down.. Naturally skinny is when you’re a small bild but you still aren’t all skin (more like leather..) and bones. And food not being a priority in healthy cases means not eating too much, maybe not eating reagularly and on some days eating too little. I think i eat in a day what she eats during the whole week, at least judging by some of her statements.

I find that comment to be particularly interesting because it’s been well documented that the less you eat, the less you CAN eat.
I think that the difference between those who are naturally thin and those who are not is that naturally thin people can eat whatever they would like, even if they choose not to for health reasons.
Unnaturally thin people starve themselves, and eventually the body gets used to eating small quantities. That’s why even recovering anorexics can’t eat a normal meal in the early phases of treatment and may even continue to require enteral feeding even if they voluntarily choose to eat.
That’s definitely true and if you do it for a long time your body will stop telling you to eat and you will end up never being hungry.
From the look of it, her body probably gave up on telling her to eat a long time ago.

Earlier in the comments, it was suggested that Rachel has a pear shape. If that’s true…I have one too, and sometimes hunching over like that or vogue-ing (whatever you want to call it, hehehe) makes us look less skinny in the chest area. I know that when I lose weight, I lose it all from my upper body first so you can see the sternum (like on Rachel), but I still have a lot of fat in my thighs/stomach. When I stand up straight, though, my sternum becomes horrifically apparent. I think that she’s really conscious of her chest, so she probably hunches over like that so as to make those bones a little less visible.
wow ok right now im struggling with anorexia and usually skinny pics inspire me but this makes me feel sick looking at her its hard to look at bones with a little layer of skin on it.

Wow! Looks like everyone actually agrees for once. She really is way too thin. Some of us prefer skinny some of us prefer curvy but it’s nice to see that we all agree when someone is way one extreme or the other. Great job! Go us!
I agree. I also think that many people just like looking at healthy people. Whether they are skinny, in between, or bigger – and I think it’s fairly obvious when someone isn’t healthy, unfortunately :/
This is frightening. Her weighing so little actually ages her. I would put her BMI near the emaciated category- around 15-15.7. I really hope she gets help; she can’t be healthy.

You’re right. And bones doesn’t always mean anorexia either. My chest bones and hip points jut out, but I don’t have anorexia. But this lady seems like she has an illness….idk.
it sort of is, just a little – I dont believe for a second that every obese person I see on the street is suffering from an undiagnosed mental condition. If that was the case, one third of people would be anorexic, which is certainly not so!
An eating disorder is not a disease.. it’s a mental illness.

Listen, I normally do not flip out, and I don’t easily say “anorexia” , “scary skinny” etc. Like, for most models: for example Alesandra is very skinny but I would never call that anorexic, or Miranda for that matter. That being said I do believe that this woman does have big problem. This is the true face of an ed, and it’s nothing but ugly and sad
My mother looks younger than her, and she’s 66. I don’t believe the pear comment, even if she is one, her knees also are very skinny. Horrible.
I don’t know who she is, but she appears to be someone who is not naturally that thin.
Of course, it could be that she was already thin and now has a very low fat percentage which makes her chest bones noticable. Was she ever bigger, by any chance?
Either way, I think it’s important to remember that her thinness could be due to many things. It could be anorexia, but it could also be drug abuse, stomach/intestinal disorders, illness, thyroid disorders…etc.
To label someone with anorexia just for being thin is like labelling someone as being schizophrenic over one comment. Anorexia is a mental disorder, not a physical one; it should only be used to describe someone when they have the mental symptoms, not only the physical ones.

Maybe it’s just the clothing, but I think if anything we should have sympathy for her if she is in fact suffering, rather than saying hurtful things.
She does look a bit bigger in that photo, so I think it’s understandable if we assume something is causing her to be thin.
The reason I posted my comment above is because a lot of people seem to think that people have a choice when it comes to an eating disorder.
They don’t, and most of the time, they don’t even choose to start. It happens, and then they’re left trying to deal with it. It would do us all well to show some compassion rather than chastize them for being “bad people whose main priority in life is being thin” (not that anyone said that, it’s just the feeling I get from many people when they discuss people with ED’s).
I agree, EDs are not something which people choose to have because they think its a good idea, this always happens, what if people like rachel and victoria beckham DID have eating disorders??
the worse posssible thing to do is post nasty comments and plaster their pictures everywhere, as im sure this would not help any disorder

Ann, I’m pretty sure that the people who don’t love to post pictures of underweight people and call them anorexic also don’t love to post pictures of fat people and talk about them. So I don’t see the hypocrisy.
I agree with sof, I think it’s detrimental to bring attention to the bodies of anorexics. The whole disorder is characterized from obsessive preoccupation with body size…extra attention would only fuel it.
Same goes with obese people. It’s not right to post pictures of them and talk about how fat and unhealthy they are and how they shouldn’t accept themselves because it’s “encouraging bad habits,” like with the star of Precious. Doing that will only cause the fat/obese person to hate themselves more and do even less towards their health.
I’m pointing out the fact many of the commenters here saying we should have nothing to say about her because she looks ill are constantly pointing out how fat people are unhealthy whenever a photo is posted of one. I will not name names. They know who they are. To me it is silly to tell people not to stand in judgment. Most human beings do it constantly and enjoy it. Leave them to it.
Its true that people shouldnt be favourable to anyone unhealthy wether it be overweight or underweight, however people tend to be more prone (within the media) to celebrate larger women as “strong and proud” and critsize EQUALLY unhealthy skinny people

i think my point was that for anyone who has health problems it must be difficult to see it being ciritsised, and media should be more supportive, they always pick the worst pictures of both overweight and underweight people at the wrong angles and print them everywhere to make a point

Life sucks, get a helmet. I don’t like the fact people constantly give me crap for having a lazy eye but that’s life. You have to learn to tune it out or suck it up.
It might be just the picture, but her chest bones definitely don’t stick out as much there, and she looks pretty. Can’t say the same about her bikini pictures. Poor lady, I like her on her show, she seems insane, but not hate worthy, and I suspect she does have an eating disorder as an offshoot of her extreme type A personality.

first of all, it seems sort of naive to argue that EDs are judged more harshly than other mental illnesses. The psychological community has worked really hard to destroy the myths associated with schizophrenia, and the saving grace is the fact that schizophrenia is one of the few diseases that is directly linked to biological strcutres in the brain – the causes of other mental illnesses are simply not that clear cut! that being said, people still judge schizophrenics VERY harshly! I should know, I worked at a homeless shelter for many years, and most American believe that schizophrenics pose an imminent danger to themselves and to society. Also, think of how people with depression or anxiety are treated…most friends and family assume their loved ones can just “shake off” feelings of sadness or fear without help from a professional or medication.
Second, if in fact Rachel Zoe does have a physical ailment that is causing her to look frail, then I think it is kind of sad that she is not treating the underlying problem because she wants to remain underweight. if she has a thyroid problem for example, it is imperative for her health to get it treated. In fact, and over active thyroid (which is associated with weight loss) is very very dangerous to one’s health! it causes increased blood pressure, heart rate and metabolic action all of which are related to heart disease and stroke.
I didn’t mean it in the naive sense that you are taking it as. Believe me, I am aware of how misunderstood people with other mental illnesses are. I would say the most misunderstood would probably be those suffering from personality disorders, seeing as how PDs are rarely portrayed in the media, have low prevalence, low research funding, and the people who suffer from them could be “functional” in society.
As you said, the psychological community has worked hard to dispel myths about schizophrenics. All I’m saying is the same effort should be made to dispel rumors about those suffering from eating disorders to the extent that the general public at least understands that there is very little “choice” being made. There is nothing naive about that.

She’s not just thin, her muscles have waisted away if you look at her arm. It’s literally skin and bones. Also if the muscle on ehr arm has disappeared it’s going to go from other areas as well as potentially damage her heart.

Maybe this is why she got sick on the show, because she is underweight. Anyway for some people who have “thinspirations” like Jessica Alba or Miranda Kerr to name a few, this is how they usually end up looking; when gone too far. Perhaps she has a thyroid problem.
Every medicine student would have theire field day with Zoe. You could use her as an excellent teaching device with all those bones sticking about.
But honestly , it’s horrible, I’m not into super skinny women anyway and so this is just about as much as I can take. She loks like she’s going to fall apart any minute. I hope she get’s some help soon. And the skin – oh my- did she smoke alot ? Plus I doubt she’s a pear , just look at her knees they are super skinny too.

I will tell you the truth. I also wanted to look like this: with tiny skinny arms, chest bones poking out… Know why? Because I wanted to be sorry for. I wanted people to feel sorry for me, to feel bad for me, to LOVE me… Which was a stupid thing to think! Now I gave up this all starving thing and began making sports… And know what? My chest bones are poking out!

I thought the same way too, 2 years ago. My weight dropped to 85 lbs and I was a mess of bones (like Rachel Zoe). Nobody loved me any more than they did before my weight loss. In fact I got sexually attacked by a guy I thought was a friend, because he probably thought I wouldn’t have the physical and emotional strength to resist him, which was true. It took me almost 2 years to get myself out of that thinking. I had lost all my friends, and I looked awful. Yeah, people felt sorry about me, but they probably laughed at me behind my back, and they certainly did not love me. I’ve regained 15 lbs and eat healthily and indulge in the occasional pizza or burger. I’m still a little on the skinny side, but now my friends have started to ask me out for meals, and I get nice comments about my looks, and I found someone who loves and respects me for who I am.

Wow. I’m disturbed by the amount of comments that are not only shallow about this but ignorant beyond belief. She isn’t “disgusting” she’s sick people – anorexic to the nth degree and most probably not going to live past her 60s.
This isn’t what happens when you’re pear shaped and want to lean out- this isn’t what happens when you “diet to the extreme”. This is what happens when you suffer from an eating disorder. I’ve also noticed with the two extremes of being underweight and overweight, generally people just laugh at obese people and find it somewhat “funny”, but then when it’s a person who’s so skinny that looks like a skeleton every one feels sorry for them, I will never understand that.
