Natalie Portman Brings the Quote of the Day
November 17, 2010 in Natalie Portman by Versus

Natalie on what she did after finishing filming for her new movie, where she plays a ballerina:
“The (day after the shoot ended) I was like, pasta, pasta, pasta! No working out. It was pretty immediate. I was ready to leave the ballet life. “I was like, ‘Please don’t let there be re-shoots for this because I don’t think I could get back into the costumes!’”
… says Natalie.

FIRST 1
This woman is so underrated in Hollywood. She’s beautiful, talented and appears very down to earth. I love her
True, but I like the fact that she’s “underrated” in Hollywood. The term “Hollywood”, these days, has turned into a joke – its now a place full of fake tanned, fake haired, hake nailed, fake bodies, fake faces, fake people. So thank god for the Natalie Portmans that, although still active in Hollywood, choose to keep their dignities
I dont think she is underrated, I am under the impression that people there (and here)respect her and find her intelligent.
She is definetely one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood.
Hmm yes true, i like and agree with both of your comments
Yes I agree her beauty is timeless and it will be hard to find a comparison to her in years to come.
agree about the hollywood comments. she is very beautiful
True that. She is one of the most beautiful women in my opinion.
She is so NOT underrated. Where have you been for the last ten years?
You’d be hard pressed to find an article/interview about that doesn’t say how Hepburn-like she looks, how brainy she is, or how not like a Hollywood trainwreck.
Not on every tabloid magazine cover every week does not equal underrated.
That’s all I hear her and Mila talk about nowadays, they must of survived on coffee and cigarettes. It’s nice to know they are normal, other actresses would probably be like “Yes, a chance to become skinnier”!
I don’t particularly like her as an actress, and i also get tired of hearing how oh so intelligent she’s just bc she’s been to a uni. But she’s ok. And seems pretty down-to-earth. The quote is whatever, predictable.
couldn’t agree with you more. People always go on and on about her intelligence, but truth is she doesn’t sounds that smart to me in interviews. Having a college degree does not equal intelligence (especially when there’s tons of money involved). And yes, she is a terrible actress…actually, one of the worst out there IMO.
Shouldn’t it count for something that she got a college degree when she already had her foot in the door in her profession at the time. Not many actors would do that. You are entitled to your own opinion of her, but you got to respect her for the fact that she wanted to further her intelligence. She may not be intelligent (Idk I’ve never met her), but wanting to further yourself mentally is intelligent, no?
There have been a lot of actresses before her that took time away from Hollywood to attend college and they don’t get nearly as many accolades as Ms. Portman does. Perhaps if she was more humble about her experiences I would be more willing to see her in a positive light. Truth is, she is always showered in praise and I have never once heard her say ‘enough, I’m really not that special’. A little humility never hurt anyone.
Yes i agree the mere mentality of wanting to learn more counts, and i for one am not saying Natalie is or isn’t smart. It’s not a question of that to me. More about how she’s praised about it all the time. Like it’s such a unique quality to be clever, and pretty. Universities are full of very smart, talented beautiful people. But then, that’s Hollywood for you, i don’t know how she is as a person, if she’s humble or not, and she can’t really control the compliments.
And not being articulate does not equal lack of intelligence.
Some of the smartest people in history were so bad with people and with words that if you chose to interview them today, they would probably sound worse than the dumbest celebrities.
this is true casey. Sometime i think i sound like an absolute idiot when trying to explain my point. But, I know i can understand a lot of complex things…especially when it comes to thinking outside the box…i just cant communicate it to people! ha ha
Are you for real? She went to HARVARD. Yes, and the teachers there don’t give a shit about you being an actress, if you fail, you fail.
So now we’re giving people slack for going to Harvard and keeping their mouth shut to the press? And I’m pretty sure that have a 120+ IQ qualifies you as above intelligence.
natalie portman had to diet for a movie? That’s sick. I don’t think i want to see it. Ballerinas always creep me out. Yes you’re graceful, but do i have to see every sinew and bone in your body?
that’s what i thought!! how much more could she have lost ? She usually must weigh like 50 kg ( 110 lb ?) tops….i’m guessing she must have starved herself to 45 kg or even less
Shes said she lost 10 kg. (22 lbs) for the role.
OMG that is not healthy! poor girl.
I’m a ballerina, although professional. It’s not that they choose to look a certain way, it’s just that they look that way as a result of their dance. It’s important to be very muscular and extremely lean in order to look graceful when dancing, and if they chose to fatten up, it would affect their peformance. And if a ballerina loves what she does so much, I’d think she’s entitled to sacrifice some of her looks to follow her passion. They don’t creep me out because I understand it’s not because they have a deluded image of thinness or are anorexic, it’s because that’s what their career requires for optimum performance.
*although not professional was what I mean to say!
This woman is so beautiful. And the fact that she’s intelligent just adds to her sex appeal. I love intelligent women. And I love women who prefers being intelligent over sexy or “hollywood-beautiful” (wich is not beautiful for real). She said that once, that she always prefered being intelligent than beautiful. Lovely.
Easy to say when you’re already both…
I thought you said you didn´t like petite women, referring to rachel bilson and mila kunis? Sorry, not really keeping track, just seem to remember it being that way. Lovely? What guy says lovely?
My boyfriend uses the word “lovely”, different language though ;D
But I agree with you,Natalie is just as thin and petite as Mila and Rachel, actually she might be skinnier.
She is stunning, clever and talented.
Number one on my top celeb list
She’s so talented and so brilliant! She has to be one of my favorite actresses in hollywood — she makes amazing movies and manages to stay out of the craziness that brings a lot of great talent down. If she needed to squeeze back into her ballet outfit all she needs is a Skineez cami and thigh slimmer (and of course no more pasta!)
She’s always looked very thin to me – but I get the impression that is natural for her. I am shocked that anyone would ask her to diet for a role – she has never looked like someone who fluctuates much in weight. And how thin do you need to be to play a ballerina? They are usually strong, lean women – not very thin! She certainly shouldn’t have needed to diet – that’s just crazy!
And what is so bad about pasta? I have Italian heritage and Italians eat heaps of pasta – and they are not fat people, on average! Why does everybody name pasta as the main thing they give up when on a diet and then can’t wait to get back to? They shouldn’t need to cut it out – maybe just have smaller portions!
It’s kind of sad that she had to lose that much weight for the movie, but I am a little more apologetic in this case than in other cases.
Ballerinas are traditionally very thin. I think after high fashion, ballet is the next big institution with the largest incidence of eating disorders. If they were really focused on accuracy then asking her to lose the weight makes sense.
What irritates me though is the movie will probably be littered with other inaccuracies that they will let pass, so why couldn’t they have let her weight slide as well? Or ask her to lose 5-10 pounds instead of 20? Movies don’t have to be 100% accurate…her wearing a tutu would be enough to convince me she’s playing a ballerina.
Oops I didn’t mean to reply to you Erica, I must have clicked wrong.
That’s okay! I get your point – but I think she was already thin enough to play a ballerina! Ballerina’s aren’t that skinny and they have to be strong too – just getting her to tone up would have sufficed.
hmm I just read the IMbd page about it, Natalie is supposed to have a crazed ex-prima ballerina momma, they may address ED in the movie, or at least the relevance of “super skinny” ideal in ballet.
Actually ballerinas are supposed to be extremely skinny. I’d been professionally trained in ballet till high school but ruptured discular forced me to take fine art major in college. Anyhow, I was supposed to be on scale everyday at the ballet class, and my instructor has a bulletin board on the wall listing our weights. If there’s much fluctuation going on, we would have a sit-down(?) with her. Probably it’s just a thing in Asian countries-I’m half Asian and half French, spent most of my childhood in Southeast Asia-but I don’t think it would be much different for classic ballet dancers in western culture.
@Emmanuelle – Just a side note but I would LOVE to see your face. French and Asian sounds like a stunning mix
@deanna: I don’t think you’d find my look stunning but definitely my little sister looks stunning.
I’m more on the Asian side with thick black hair, round face, and my sister has thin blonde hair with paler skin. But her eyes are dark brown while mines are light grayish blue, though. My husband is half Asian, half Caucasian as well, so I have no idea how my kids will look like.
@Emmanuelle
You sound very pretty! Gray eyes are really pretty, especially when combined with asian features. I always think half-asians are really beautiful.
Emmanuelle you sound gorgeous! I prefer darker hair. I agree Mel, I want to see what I’d look like if I was part Asian haha
Haha well I AM asian so I’ve got half of it (:
YES! i agree Casey…
Why didn’t they get actually ballerina’s to play the ballerina’s? I am sure there are plenty of them that can act.
Same with all those cheerleading/dancing/gymnastic films and shows…being able to do the skill that the show is about should be kind of important but they end up using stunt doubles for all the hard bits.
I get your point but famous, popular names bring in the viewers and the money.
I disagree. I’d much rather watch a good actor try to dance and have to swap out with a stunt double, than watch a good dancer attempt to act. While a movie may have numerous dancing or gymnastics scenes, it’s should primarily be about the plot and story. There’s nothing worse than suffering through dancing movies entirely driven by the actual choreography and dance numbers because the dancers aren’t convincing actors so there can’t be a plot.
You’re better off watching Riverdance at that point. I go to a movie to see good acting and be told a story, even if the story is about dancers. I’ll go to a dance competition or exhibition when I’m looking for stellar dancers.
She looks great in the previews. You do need a certain body type to pull off being a ballerina. Perhaps she just needed to loose just a little bit to fit the part.
But I agree that she is underrated. I think she is a very good actress and she is very pretty.
She is such a beautiful woman seriously everytime I see her on movies her face dazzles me by being so purely beautiful. And it makes me question”why, why, why God?Why did you create so many beautiful women and only a few handsome guys?”It’s bugging me,it makes me wanna go gay!:[
^This. I actually think people who are bi might have it easier cause there are so many more people to choose from! And then you wouldn’t feel the need to put down or be competitive with other women as much because you would be attracted to them too. You would have twice as many people to be attracted to. Unfortunately I can’t change my orientation haha.
you said it!If I were a bi, I would enjoy seeing the beauties aorund I wouldn’t be like”darnitsheistallerthanme, nowayherwaististinierthanmine, godnoherbuttisunquestionablybetter”.I don’t know if it has anything to do with estrogen but I wish I could appreciate the beauties I see without sowing a piece of jeaolusy seed in my heart. No I am really ok with myself,I am comfortable with my body and face I know I am no goddess but beautiful enough.Sadly, even if I were Adriana Lima(one of the most beautiful women God created-imo) I would keep feeling this way.each girl/woman has her own beauty, not really comparable to one another,so I should have stopped getting angry with God,right? But no,I can’t quit that.He played unfair during the creation.I guess that is why I was happy when I was giving a hot passionate kiss to a girl and enjoying it in my dream:]
oops,too much wordy:[
Yes it’s way too unfair! And girls are probably a lot less likely to cheat than guys and you can relate to them more. Exactly – you would appreciate others for their beauty and be attracted to them rather than see them as competition.
She`s a natural beauty,no plastic surgeries and very good actress
Eh BS. She only had to lose weight to get the appearance of being thin. The only reasons why ballerinas are traditionally thin, more so these days compared to the 1940s-1950s is because the overwhelming amount of athleticism that goes into ballet. In ballet you are building lean muscle, and a slim appearance and toned body is a result of continuously shaping your body.
Professional dancers, especially ballerinas must eat but they must fuel their bodies with the right foods. Like any athlete you must eat.
lol like you couldn’t eatWHOLE GRAIN pasta? God, Hollywood has some dumb health ideas.
I gotta say that neither one of them looks like a classical ballerina. All those girls look starved and they clearly have eating disorders. I remember seeing the trailer for the movie and thinking they both looked healthy. Not that i think they should have been made to lose more weight, of course.
She’s tiny, I don’t think she lose that much…
On an unrelated side-note, I think she’s just lovely — she’s totally my girl crush
Portman has a *great* body but she can’t pass for a dancer. Ballet dancers incredibly thin and hard with muscles. I agree with other posters, they should have gotten a real ballet dancer to play the part.
