15 Year-Old Dakota Fanning Poses for Italian Vogue
February 16, 2010 in Makeover or Makeunder? by Versus
Dakota Fanning is 15 and she’s currently the star of a fashiony desaturated shoot in Italian Vogue, a shoot where she sports lace, bustiers and big, bold, dark eyebrows (that make her look almost unrecognizable).
What do you guys think – is this shoot age appropriate or is Dakota growing up a bit too fast?
P.S.: We’re not commenting on her figure, she’s just 15. Talk styling, photo-shoot and clothes.
Much more after the jump!

I think it’s completely appropriate. She’s not overly sexy or anything, just a bit older looking then she really is. From what i’ve seen i think she can handle being treated like an adult without letting it get to her head and thinking she’s more mature than others (what i think some child stars grow up thinking, often wrongfully). Of course there are always some ppl that might look at these pics in an inappropriate way, but i don’t feel like she’s being provocative.
And i love the clothes and make-up, forgot to even pay attention to the shoot itself
i totally agree!
I agree completely. I’d also like to point out that plenty of models start very young (13) and are starring in more risque photo shoots than this. If young models are able to set work apart from real life, I’m sure other young women are able to as well.
Agreed.
She looks nice, and I guess it shows how most model are indeed young, maybe her age, cause she looks like a real model here
She makes a good model; her expression changes with each pic and there’s variety in her poses. I know a good photographer was probably behind that, but she makes it look so natural. And yes, I agree with Sidney, she doesn’t strike me as trying to be provocative or anything. 15 ain’t that young anyway; she looks young for her age, which might be why ppl would criticize her for dressing in overly mature styles and fabrics of clothing. I LOVE her as an actress and think she’s got GREAT potential and a promising future ahead of her.
I love the styling. Give me a strong brow, lace, and leather and I’m on board. I completely agree with Sidney. It is italian Vogue-a fashion mag and she is style is a very fashionable way. I don’t think she looks overly provocative; she just looks a bit older more mature. And I agree with Animaniac. She makes a good model changing her expression. Each shot it different and interesting to look at.
i think she is really very pretty.
i’m sure she will grow up to make even more great films
i don’t know why but i love love love the dark eyebrows, they’re very pronounced and frame her face quite nicely.
as for the clothes they’re nice too, am i wrong in thinking they might be a bit sophisticated?
maybe it’s just me but because i grew up so fast in terms of maturity and sense of style that looking back i’d wished i’d acted my age.
when i was 15 i was mistaken numerous times for being older than my older sister, she was 22.
i just don’t dig the eyebrows.
HORRID !
I completely agree! thats the only thing that turns me off about this photoshoot!
I actually really like the eyebrows they add a lot to her face, I love thick brows.
they shoulda made it a uni-brow.
I really like this shoot, very much fashion orientated as opposed to over-sexualising a teenager.
She really looks like Kate Winslet in the face here!!
totally agree! she looks like a younger Kate Winslet!
age appropriate
If the target of this magazins are the people over age 20 … it is ok!
If a child see this magazins (a girl/child in corset) may have a bad impact.
I saw later the Post Scriptum.
On the subject – about her clothes: don’t like them eighter, except the dress from the picture in which she wearing the leather jacket. That is a nice dress.
About the eyebrows – in this photo-shoots she resemble with a pokemon or a japanesse cartoon caracter. Or maybe the stylist want to reach that image.
yeah but the problem is that children WILL see these photos. these photos were posted up on oceanup and that’s a kid’s website. so it’s not like magazine pics will stay in a magazine, especially with pretty big celebs. that said i don’t think that this is a inappropriate shoot. but i do think that if this was miley cyrus, the world would be up in arms over the pics.
But what is it going to do to children that see these photos? I don’t see anything harmful that they would be seeing…
yeah i mean it’s just that someone said that if a child saw it it would be bad. but children will see it. that’s what i was saying. i mean it’s an okay shoot, nothing really bad with it. but it’s a bit naive thinking that kids won’t see these photos or any teen celeb photos really
Oh I see. I agree, children will probably see this photoshoot, especially her younger fans. I guess I misunderstood you because I thought you were saying the photoshoot was inappropriate…I feel like even if kids see it, it’s not going to damage them or lead them astray.
In my opinion it has bad impact on both youngsters and adults as it sends two messages–for teens-grow faster, be sexy, look mature; for adults-look always youthfull. And it’s not possible to attain that for most of people, THIS is what creates unreal expectations and dissatisfaction with our own bodies, this is how they brainwash us.
Typically teenagers are more likely to buy and want to look like the girls on teen magazines. The more mature magazines still existed and we still saw them when I was a teenager, yet hardly anyone in school felt the need to grow up faster or look mature. It was only the few ultra-popular-girls clique that took the bait.
As for the message to always look youthful… I personally (don’t know about others) don’t feel I get this message from this photo shoot. She’s a teenager. Adult women (with their maturity) will know it’s rare that they will ever look like her again. I look at women such as Christie Brinkley, Gong Li, Meryl Streep, Joan Chen and think I want to keep myself healthy and fit so that I can age gracefully with confidence.
In my opinion, the normalisation of plastic surgery is something that may affect adult women more than photo shoots of teenaged models. Some may begin to think getting a nip and a tuck is part of the ‘natural’ process of ageing: ‘everyone does it, so why not me?’ They already succeed fairly well in pushing all these creams and lotions to make your skin look supple and young again.
Maybe the first pic w/ the tongue out is a bit lolita, but otherwise this is a strong shoot. I think it’s done tastefully.
Actually, I quite like it, I think she looks pretty awesome, love the styling with all the leather and lace and corsets, it looks fab. And not overly sexualised at all. I particularly love the 3rd and 4th photos, I love the clothes, SO much! It’s something I’d want to wear, which is the aim of a good model, is it not? I don’t think it matters that she’s only 15 for this shoot, there is nothing that remotely suggests anything sexual, IMO
I love it.. she looks cute
It didnt even cross my mind that someone would think there is something inappropriate in this photoshoot. A lot of models start at the age of 15, and the clothes are just fine. I LOVE the skirt in the first picture!
I for one DO think it is inappropriate… why is that so hard to believe? People have different values, different tastes, different perceptions. My somewhat religious, traditional values tell me that this is WRONG. I don’t see how the other (mature) people don’t see it, she does not looks 15, she looks 25. And just because models start undressing for fashion and modeling from the age of 13 does NOT make it right.
Um, no one was knocking people who believe this is inappropriate…
However, I think most see this as fine, because for one, she’s not undressed, she’s posing with quite conservative clothing. Aside from the one pic with the tongue (which isn’t even inappropriate), I don’t see where you’re coming from, and should not be the basis for deeming the entire shoot inappropriate.
Also your comment: “I don’t see how the other (mature) people don’t see it, she does not looks 15, she looks 25.” is an immature statement, and you contradict yourself, because just above you stated “people have different perceptions”. You’re assuming that the majority are immature because they don’t believe this photo shoot is inappropriate?
Also, most photo’s don’t have to be an exact depiction of ones age or looks. The thing with fashion is that it’s not only clothing, but art. You can paint (in this case, cover with makeup) a face to be whatever you want it to be.
I’ll use your mantra to make my point. Just because you have conservative values, does NOT make this wrong.
Sorry if this came off a bit rude, I do not mean to be. I just hate people who come into discussions with closed-minded views.
Do me a favor and check out the facebook profiles of other fifteen-nearly-sixteen year old girls. In comparison, this is nothing. And I, for one, find it tasteful and artistic.
I think it’s appropriate.
I really like this shoot . . . the second to last photo is gorgeous, I think!
Can’t put my finger on it, but there is something that bothers me. Maybe just because i’ll always be one of those young people, you know, always looking younger than my age, always feeling young and so on. And even though she is 15 this photos are not fresh, youthful, enviable… they rather look sophisticated and mature and oldish and sort of sending a message of growing up as fast as possible is the right thing to do. I just don’t feel them…
I don’t feel them either!
There is something off aout them..
what’s up with these dark eyebrows on models/singers/actresses lately?
i like the photos
HATE IT. I would definitely hate it if my 15 year-old daughter would do this (I actually have one). Whgat bothers be? The lingerie-thing in the first picutre, the tongue and the clothes just don’t agree with her age.
Agree. A fifteen year old girl should party with her friends, do overnights with talking about boys but not posing for a magazine and denying that she has just grown out of childhood.
The pictures are clearly playing with her beginning sexual identity and this is all wrong. She is a girl, not a woman.
i love these picture and the strong dark eyebrows on her . i think that the brows give her more expression in her face.
yeah definitely, they look killer cool on her.
And her parent are where ?????? Not exactly on the Miley Cyrus controversy level but a little to sexy for a 15 year old LAMMMMEEE
I disagree, I don’t see how these pictures are at all too sexy or anything like that. She is not doing anything inappropriate in them she is just posing! Also aside from that many of you are acting like 15 year olds are like 10 year olds or something, you start to come in to your own around 15 and at some point you are going to find your sexuality, I am not saying she should do it in photographs or pose in a slutty way or anything I just don’t think it is really crazy that she is dressing like this and posing this way.
Is it just me, or her head is big (too big) in the second picture?
Other than that, i think she would be so beautiful without those BIG eyebrows, and in teenage clothes.
I think is age appropriate. She looks gorgeous
She looks great, and is a great model. Emma Watson, take a cue.
I especially like the 3rd and 4th photos with the leather jacket. Don’t like the makeup, those eyebrows are hideous.
And as for age appropriateness, I don’t see anything inappropriate about the shoot. It’s not like 15 year old girls don’t get dressed up and take photos anyway.
I love the outfits and the make-up. She looks just like a model. I think that people find the photo shoot age inappropriate because she looks much younger than she is – her face is so child like:)
style-wise, im lovin’ it!!! i always loves leather jacket and ruffles dress combo..
and the lace long jacket… please… give it to me!!!
and it is totally age appropriate!
Wow I love the shoot! She looks really pretty and I think the wardrobe/hair/makeup is perfect. She is such a wonderful actress, it will be really cool watching her career blossom as she gets older. I don’t think there is anything weird or inappropriate about the shoot at all, she is 15 practically sixteen. At this age is when you discover fashion, clothes, makeup ect. My favorite photos are the 2nd and 4th.
Wow I all ways imagened she’d grow into being a really akward teenager like most child stars…boy was I wrong. She’s gorgeous.
She sort of looks like Lindsay Lohan when Lindsay Lohan still looked like Lyndsay Lohan in a few of these.
I thought the same thing!! I really hope she doesn’t turn into another Lilo (being a child star and everything)…the world can only handle one.
She looks really beautiful, though. She is definitely growing into a beautiful woman
Age appropriate. Especially with the bra they chose (not sexy).
Love the shots. Those shoes are hot.
I adore this girl.
Age appropriate. She’s covered and not suggestive.
to me, she doesn’t look 15. kind of reminds me of Kate Winslet though.
as for the appropriateness, I think it’s fine. I just dont think she looks 15.
she looks like lauren conrad to me. and 18 at least.
she looks great for ehr age, not too bichty..
she’s the same age as me
gosh she’s so skinny
cute outfits
i like the jacket in the third pic
i think the shoot was very tastefully done. They seemed to have kept in mind they were photographing a 15 year old and did not do anything to make it age inappropriate or overly sexual. i love love love the last pic. and the one right before it is so beautiful as well. shes really coming into her own.
She’s only 15!!! when i was 15 i was in such a hurry for growing up, teen years pass by soooo quickly and adulthood is so long. i don’t think it is not appropiate but i would not recommend it either. She will have enough time to do this kind of photoshootings. i bet she’ll grow up to be a gorgeus woman.
a kid playing dress up, really fashionable dress up. i think its adorable. no problem with it at all
This looks awkward and forced. And she doesn’t look very comfortable either.
Many high-fashion models start off very young, and it’s ok, they look amazing doing shoots such as this, but she’s not a high-fashion model!
Woah, she’s changed.
I think this shoot is gorgeous. I love the clothes and styling.
And her eyebrows – in my opinion – give her a very ‘model-y’ look.
I wouldn’t have been able to put a name to her if it weren’t in the title.
Definitely age appropriate.
Good shoot. So glad they didn’t show skin cause I would be offended by that on such a young girl. She looks so pretty. I could see her modeling as she gets older!
who the hell cares? let her be what she wants to be, she’s hurting no one. And she has NO responsibility as a role model to young girls.
Crap i thought it was taylor momsen for a second there…
The brows look ridiculous. The only pic I thought was sort of inappropriate was the first one. It wasn’t even that bad.
Those eyebrows are terrible. I guess they’re supposed to be sort of “statement” brows? They overpower her eyes in my opinion.
I actually thought the first picture *was* Lauren Conrad. I think it’s a tasteful shoot.
she’s beautiful so it LOOKS great, but maybe 15 is a bit young for all that. however in saying that if she was 16 it would SOUND more appropriate.
maybe its just the look on her face with the tongue that makes it a bit OTT
I think it’s cute & appropriate…enough. The first picture however, I would never allow my 15 yr old daughter to wear a top like that & pose like that. I think the brows are very high fashion and appropriate for an editorial. But I wish the photos showed her smiling & having fun, looking 15!!
Well, on the one hand, I do think that these photos are overly sexual for a 15-yr-old.
On the other hand, though, I remember myself when I was 15, and I was VERY sexual. I never did anything with anybody except for some really bad making out, but nevertheless I wore really provocative clothing and flirted like crazy and would easily have posed for photos like this without it being out of character at all. My parents never let me watch TV or go to the movies, so I can’t say that I was corrupted by the oversexualized American culture either – it was just a part of my personality, no doubt enhanced by crazy teenage hormones.
Basically, I think it’s an illusion that 15-yr-olds are these innocent virginal creatures and that it’s some kind of pedophilia to depict them as sexual creatures. Maybe some are still innocent, but plenty of others are already quite lascivious.
I just reread this comment, and what I really mean is: My FIRST thought was indeed that the photos are overly sexual, but after further thought, I realized that they’re not.
I’m taking a course in university about this actually; that we think children are so innocent. This is a construct of our society, and not a fact about children.
When we think of childhood as a whole, we think of children as innocent. Any child who shows a difference from the nostalgic socially constructed child, is a child who is rebellious, a deviant, and in many cases, assumed to be sexualized.
Before the colonization of childhood, children were given responsibilities. There was no middle between child and adulthood. As soon as a child was able to be a functioning member of society, they were an adult. They didn’t need censorship, they didn’t need years of training to become an adult, they learned as they became older. However, now that we have thrown in the whole “pre-teen” and “teenager” category between child and adulthood, we censor everything and feel everything needs to be more sensitized. When children do transition into the adult world, they go in unprepared, and controlled my the powerful, with no self thought, because we have influenced them their whole lives that they are children that need to be taught and guided.
Basically, before we brought in the notion and ideological ideas of “pre-teen, and teenager”, children were doing things that today we would be shocked and frightened to think of a child doing, acting, or saying.
What I find ridiculous is that we are holding children back from fully developing because we are constructing them as innocent and as this ideological child. No, children are not innocent. They are aware of their surroundings, and many of the things we PERCEIVE as sexual, is exploration to them. And if a child becomes sexual, it’s damn natural, and not because “oh my god, our society is corrupted”. Hey, did you know “back in the good old days”, most people were promiscuous, and did have very sexual lives? It was all hush-hush, but if you actually read history, men and women, and even younger generations have ALWAYS been sexual.
I find it funny how society has tried to keep this shit behind doors and tell us it’s wrong and that it’s a newly constructed situation because of our bad morals.
she looks like Hittler with those brows LOL
So THIS is why many pedobears are reading Italian Vogue lately…
As a 15-year old and a fan of Dakota’s, I would like to say this is entirely appropriate. She doesn’t look like she’s wearing clothes that are too revealing and overtly sexy, and she’s definitely demonstrated that she’s an intelligent young woman. While I will admit that, at older ages, you tend to be more wise do to the longer time you’ve spent alive, being a teenager shouldn’t mean that you’re exempt from having your opinions listened to, or being featured in really beautiful magazine editorials. I feel like Dakota is just as or even more intelligent than many older celebrities, and I wish we could see her as more of an actress, then some teenager. Obviously some idiot is going to say this is oversexualized or, oh noes, kids are growing up to fast! As if maybe maturing and exploring the world is a bad thing if it’s done at earlier ages. I think this shoot is beautiful, and I think that she’s beautiful, and I hope to be seeing her a lot more when she’s older too.
I’m also fifteen and I also tend to dress in similar clothes, lace, leather jackets, floaty dresses. I go to a private school without a uniform, so I can normally dress down some of these pieces to wear to school. There is nothing inappropriate about a teenage girl not exposing herself but still dressing stylishly.
She looks like Kate Winslet in the last photo!
Hey ME AND MY MAM GOT IVS IN OK
BUT I AM NOT HAPPY AMY
I dunno why I thought of Madonna, but she looks beautiful in all the pictures, go her!
i don’t think she is growing up too fast but she would not make a good model she cant express hersel in these photos at all
I know that thick, bold, dark eyebrows are in – but this just simply does not suit her. Especially being a fair skinned blonde. Don’t get me wrong, Dakota is beautiful and models well, but I think they are trying to make her too much of a haute-couture fashion icon too soon. Possibly comparing her to Agnyss Deyn, who has her own personality and look.
In my opinion, Dakota should stay the way she is – demure, young and enjoying life as a teen while she can.
Quelle classe !
