Lea Michele: ‘I’m a girl who eats’
September 3, 2010 in Beauty & Body Image, Celebrity Quotes, Lea Michele by Versus

Glee actress Lea Michele, who lost some weight recently and loves her Jewish nose, has something to share:
“I love being healthy. I get a lot of sleep. I’m a girl who eats. And I feel beautiful no matter how I look. I have my family to thank for that. I’ll have a big Italian dinner, and I don’t give a crap because it makes me happy.”
… says Lea in Glamour Magazine.

Hmmm. . . I don’t know if I really believe what she is saying based on other posts about her being vegan AND cutting out carbs AND the fact that she lost soo much weight. I mean, what Italian food can you eat that is vegan AND has no carbs lol?
a big italian salad with muscolo di grano? Yeah, sounds kind of ‘iffy’!! I think she meant a light Italiano dinner!
do you know how many calories the glee cast members must burn off dancing during a 14 hour work day?? day after day it adds up…i do believe her…also i am vegan and eat healthy italian /mediterrean food..whats the problem? why the ‘lying’ comments and all the hate??….she’s pretty but looks too thin.
exactly- they have trained a lot harder for this second season, thats why the quick weight loss. i believe her.
shes downright lying! no way can one be so skinny and still be eating Italian, which is so tasty and that’s why fattening too!
Italian food isn’t fattening as a general rule. I have Italian heritage and most of my relatives in Italy are healthy and curvy – not fat or skinny. They eat cheese, rice, pasta and bread – but also plenty of fruit and veggies. Olive oil is a big part of the Italian diet and it is mostly ‘good’ fat. Red wine also plays a big role.
So it’s not fattening – but like any diet it depends on your activity levels too.
This.
I’m of Italian heritage (my dad’s an immigrant, my mother is the child of ones) and I have family there. Pretty much all we eat is traditional Italian food at home. Lots of pasta, meat, veggies, and fish. None of us are overweight, actually on the lower end of healthy BMIs. After four kids, my mom barely tips over 115lbs. We also live in an area of the GTA with a lot of Italian families, and the trend is pretty much the same. You can eat a Mediterranean diet and stay slim, even skinny (a lot of the girls in my high school were TINY), even if you have a few massive meals. So I’m inclined to believed Lea Michele.
(Personal theory? There aren’t a whole lot of artificial ingredients in traditional Italian cooking, even in the pizzas, which probably helps a lot.)
ok fine guys relax!! i take bak the ‘all italian food is fattening’!!! I actually jumped to writing that coz its the first time Ive commented on skiyvscurvy, was very excited
))))
but i still truly believe that Lea is definitely starving herself to lose weight! theres a difference in losing weight by exercising (being toned) and looking skinny and weak in the face!
its true dat some people hav a good metablosim and remain skinny no matter wat but we all know wat she lookd like before!
Given her recent weight loss I would be inclined to think she isn’t being 100% truthful either. As for all Italian food being fattening: I live close to Italy and know a few Italian people who are always eating Italian food and are slim. There is much more to Italian cuisine than pasta and pizza.
Italian food fattening?!? You must only know takeaway pizza and badly made pasta.
Please re-read my comment. I was saying Italian food was actually NOT fattening in response to Tasha saying it was fattening. Why else would I say there is more to Italian cuisine than pasta and pizza?
EllaLaLa, my comment was in response to Tasha’s too
Sorry for the mistake Marge. Since it was displayed as a reply to my post, I thought it was addressed to me!
Sure they can. If people can eat pizza, burgers and cheesecake every day and still be 100 pounds, Italian food is nothing.
But I agree. Lea Michele sounds like she is lying. She doesn’t srike me as someone who “doesn’t care.”
True traditional italian is quite healthy, it’s the american italian that’s fattening: there’s added cream in everything and the portions are enormous.
She has lost so much weight
She is so full of it! Sure, you eat loads, especially tasty and yes fattening Italian food, you have Italian genetic (and Italian women are never skinny, they are curvy) and you have lost so much recently because you have got magical metabolism boost???What a BS???!!! She is obviously starving herself. She is not any close to being naturally thin.
What? There are so many skinny Italian women you have no idea. Have you even been to Italy? Seen an Italian show?
She’s lost quite a bit of weight and by claiming that she is ‘a girl who eats’ she is making it seem like she can get away with eating whatever she likes and not putting on weight. Some people are like that, but the majority of us are not that lucky – and nor is she if she has lost weight – you don’t do that by eating whatever you want!
well if she is vegan and cutting out huge food groups, then i would be questioning her statements aswell. she could on the other hand have a big dinner, but with a light lunch and breakfast and still be skinny, its about what you put in overall. some people have one big meal and nothing else. crazy- i couldn’t do it.
the point i guess is that she is trying to imply she can just stuff her face if she wants. bullly for her. its a pointless juvenile claim, especially if she has made previous statements to the opposite. she plays a high school kid, but she’s a grown woman and needs to start acting like one. misleading the public won’t earn you fans.
i am getting sick of skinny celebrities claiming they eat tons and tons and tons and love and relish in every second of it, and they never diet and barely exercise, and their favourite foods are so fattening… i mean, they looooove their huge pasta dinners and always always always eat dessert. oh, and they don’t gain weight because of some unknown medical condition or speedy metabolism… they have a team of doctors trying to figure it out… but goodness gracious they have to eat like 6,000 calories a day just to not lose anymore weight! it’s a nightmare!!!… uhm, yeah, kiss my ass. how come if the average woman did that, she’d be huge and disgustingly overweight?
haha
Agreed, that;s because if they tell the truth, aka ‘i count every single calorie and work my ass off’, critics will tell her she’s being a bad example. Because somehow they think normal people are idiots and don’t realize what things these poor misguided celebs are doing
I don’t doubt a small percentage of celebs are naturally skinny, have a speedy metabolism, are sporty (or not) and genuinely not that *interested* in, let alone obsessed with, food. People like that exist in normal society so there are bound to be a few of them in Hollywood too!
But I agree with you veganbean – it would be so refreshing to hear the phoneys admit that yes, they do have to work out at the gym to get the curves they have, and yes, they do have to watch what they eat (not starve themselves, but not pig out every day) to maintain their low weight.
For some reason women admire other women who are naturally skinny, i.e. have never had to do anything to contribute to their body’s appearance and just inherited of a particular genetic quirk, whereas they treat celebs who have worked hard to get their shape with a fair amount of disdain – because then they’re only “mere mortals” like the rest of us, instead of supernatural goddesses. It’s a shame.
I say thumbs up to people like Sophia Bush, Hayden Panettiere, and Leighton Meester, who seem to send out the most balanced message in the industry.
lol, I know. Especially when they used to weight more but they’re now much thinner. They think we’re dumb.
Her weight loss is most evident in her face. She looks pretty similar everywhere else. @veganbean I hate it too. Why don’t they just own up. The public aren’t blind. They know that this girl clearly isn’t telling the truth.
I think i read the same quote only longer somewhere, and if my memory serves me correctly, she said something like she can eat a big italian dinner, and it will show bc she’s so small, but she still doesn’t care. like she’s saying she feels beautiful no matter what. so rather than saying she can eat loads and loads, to me it could sound like she doesn’t fret over looking puffy or a bit bloated every now and then, or gaining a pound from a huge meal. how that falls into place with her recent weight loss, meh idk, but even if she did want to stay skinny, it wouldn’t mean she could go a bit overboard just every now and then. plus all the dancing she does takes up energy, it’s not like at her current size she couldn’t afford to eat anything.
LYING. First she stated that she was vegan, and now she says that she eats lots of Italian food? Give me a break. God this chick is so full of herself. People shouldn’t listen to people like Lea. Jennifer Aniston would be a much better person to gain inspiration from.
Well, I also don’t like her much and don’t think she eats a lot, but isn’t she on a show with a lot of dancing and such? When she says she eats italian food and enjoys eating than that doesn’t mean she lets herself go and doesn’t watch what she eats.
A healthy vegan diet and a lot of exercise could explain her weight loss too.
Fake :S
She does look like she’s lost a little bit of weight, but not ano or anything.
it’s not too hard to make italian food vegan friendly. no meat in the sauce, olive oil instead of butter and hold the cheese. if you’re preparing it yourself it’s very easy. i have a big family that finds me pretty weird for enjoying vegan and vegetarian food, but overall they’re supportive and will help me find substitutes at dinner when they’re having a big steak night– so what’s she’s saying is not exactly easy, but not altogether impossible!
How about the pasta? You’d have to make your own pasta as well with only flour and water. However that won’t make into pasta, you need eggs for that (ask any chef).
But, anyway, I wouldn’t call that italian anymore, because italian food has the most important food groups in it: carbs, veg, meat, dairy. That’s why it’s actually healthy, it’s very filling and keeps going all day, without feeling the need to snack or have sugary foods/drinks.
Oops, my bad, you can use semolina flour to make eggless pasta
i really hate that when skinny girls said they don’t diet, is it possible? “LIAR” Michele…
She is a girl who lies :S
Are you on crack or just another angry fat girl who hates that some women are naturally thin?
Jeez what’s with all the haters. She looked fantastic last year as she does now this year. I can see that she lost weight and she looks incredible. She has beautiful lean legs which I would love to have.
I remember watching a behind-the-scenes clip on Glee and they talk about how they wake up early and finish late because of all the dance numbers they have to do. So Kudos to Lea Michele and the cast.
Clearly we don’t know all the changes in her life that prompted her weight loss but in any case, Lea looks amazing.
please. i’m tired of celebrities acting like they are immune to the normal biology of tons of calories = getting fat! my guess is she eats some italian lettuce and sniffs a plate of pasta once a month
HAHAHAHAHAHA.
WHY CAN’T CELEBRITIES JUST KEEP IT REAL AND FLAT OUT THEY DON’T EAT A LOT. NO ONE CARES. JUST STOP DILUTING THE AMERICAN POPULATION THAT CAN EAT TONS AND STILL BE PIN THIN.
JESUS CHRIST.
wow that was derpy. I should have proofread that. but you get what I mean.
hahaha yes!!! exactly. thankgod someone calls out the BS.
Maybe her definition of “big” is warped from time spent with other celebrities.
well, she can eat big meals and stay this small if she only eats those big meals once in a blue moon.
and while i’m sure she doesn’t eat like a pig i also think that celebrities lose weight when they have busy schedules just like anyone else. you’re always moving and don’t have time for mindless snacking that usually contributes to a weight gain
that is a horrible magazine cover
I don’t understand what is wrong with eating healthily, potentially working out, and looking great? It just doesn’t make sense why anyone would criticize her. She should be a role model.
Because they’re upset they aren’t thin and have to work out (a real chore) to get faintly close to her size. Unhealthy women who don’t exercise are who they look up to so this offends them.
Actually, i think it’s plausable. I mean consider a plate of boiled spagetti (350kcal), tomato sauce (100kcal something without meat). Not breaking the bank and if she ‘spends’ a lot of calories dancing etc… weight loss on 4 bowls of said spagetti a day is quite logical. People assume that loosing a lot of weight has to equal eating lettuce but starting from the scientific (albeit not that standard) 2000kcal a day, anything less than 1,500kcal plus exersice and being very mobile is automatically followed by weight loss.
Boiled spaghetti and tomato sauce does not make spaghetti .
There are people in the world who can eat lots of food and eat whatever the hell they want and never gain weight, honestly I am one of them I eat loads of food and I eat a big meal every night also, however, I’m also very tall, thing is though if you are one of the people who eats whatever they want and just CANT gain weight then you are always skinny, so I dont believe most celebs when they say this stuff because they start off looking one way then lose a bunch of weight as their fame increases. Doesn’t add up.
Dont actually like this chick anyway I heard she is a diva and she always looks so into herself.
Looks like she has only lost 4-5 pounds
max, personally I think she would look so much better if she was at least the size of dianna agron who looks perfect. Lea’s weight loss is far from dramatic and I think she should loose at least 10 more pounds and then she will be on her way to being Hollywood skinny!
What?! Are you saying she SHOULD lose 10 pounds?
Wow, some people really are fixated on being perfectly skinny.
Whatever…no, she doesn’t need to lose 10 more lbs.
You are crazy, in the Aug 2010 photo she is really about as skinny as you can get.
I agree she should lose about ten more pounds. Out of all the women on the show I actually think Emma has the nicest figure. Lea still has a lot of loose flesh and it just looks sloppy to me (have to disagree about Dianna–she’s got a beautiful face but I also think she could lose a few pounds). There are some women like Kate Winslet who can pull off that plus-size look, but Lea just isn’t one of them. Politically incorrect though that is, thinner women do generally look better on TV since TV adds weight.
okey..
what’s wrong with these celebs who used to be curvy/healthy-looking and then they lose quite a bit weight
and that’s when they start to tell everywhere how much they eat
that’s exactly how developing anorexics/bulimics act
i know it personally
having a curve in your waist with wider hips (curvy) has zero to do with health. And if you mean like Marilyn Monroe types, well, that’s gross, because they often don’t work out at all and are admired simply for having big jugs. Get over it.
Don’t be mad cuz she looks great. Be happy she’s pretty, talented, healthy, and slender and a good role model for women. =]
How wrong you are honey….keep trollin’…………….
she seems to be an annoying brat before/after weightloss, italian dinner or not, whenever, whatever.
i’m done with this ‘diva’ for sure.
Yes, it’s very true that she’s doing quite a bit of dancing on ‘Glee.’ That, however, does not account for the weight loss. Remember, she was doing theatre long before ‘Glee’ and eight shows a week is EXHAUSTING and a TON of hard work. If it were true that she’s lost weight from the long hours, then she would have been slimmer from her theatre days and not just from her ‘Glee’ work.
From what I’ve heard she became a vegan recently ( around when Glee started)
You can’t have a BIG italian dinner (especially if you’re vegan) and being skinny, geez, this people must think we’re all stupid.
Maybe she gave this interview while she was still eating?
The interview was done in a coffee shop
She’s skinny now. Hope she doesn’t lose more weight!
If I ever am famous – I will never ever ever talk about what I eat or my weight. It just never works out….
you can be vegan/veg and still follow a Mediterranean diet. But yeah, sick of all this f*cking diet talk from celebrities. As if I care what Lea Michele chows on.
I’m sure she’s exaggerating when she says she doesn’t care about what she eats, but it’s not like any magazine, especially Glamour who is all about embracing your body lately, wants to print “I only eat x amount of calories everyday and I’m miserable.” Nobody wants to read that either, so I would say it’s a little bit harsh to call her a “liar.”
All I have to say to this can be seen in the following picture:
http://i893.photobucket.com/albums/ac139/jemima98/LOL.jpg
She’s always been slim but in the August 2010 photo just looks plain skinny.
She might be lying but she might not be. I think it’s perfectly reasonable for her to lose weight. She probably enjoys dinner after a long day of choreography and filming for Glee. I think she looks perfectly fine and healthy. Why do people bash a celebrity for losing weight?
Warning: Massive rant.
Why do celebs always put it down to “I eat heaps, but I guess I have good genes and a fast metabolism.” Way to treat us like imbeciles! It’s obvious she’s lost a lot of weight, whether it be due to dieting, increased physical activity or a combination of both which, GUESS WHAT? Happens to most people under similar circumstances. It would be much appreciated if celebs could just admit the obvious “Yes I’m working hard/under pressure at the moment,’ rather than take the ‘I have a super human metabolism approach’. Stop making us feel like genetic failures with your bullsh*t ‘I like to eat’ talk. We have a hunch you’re lying, and you’re giving my metabolism an inferiority complex!! -End rant-
I think it’s a bit ridiculous that every time a thin celebrity says they “eat a lot” every one thinks they’re lying. I eat a lot and usually not very healthy and never work out and am still very very thin. It is entirely possible she does eat the way she says she does, especially with all the dancing/training she does for the show.
May be because she used to weigh more and was on a busy schedule in theater that required a lot of physical work too. If she was just as thin before I would be inclined to believe her but she definitely wasn’t.
she just look so bobbleheaded in the last picture! its unnatural
I love this girl …she is so normal and confident.I appreciate her life style…..she is a role model…….bravooo Lea
I like Lea Michelle al lot and I do believe her. When you´re on a vegan diet, you need to carefully plan what to eat and most of the time, junkfood is not available to you. This means you are already eating healthy and don´t exceed your recommended daily intake of caloriees. Combined with an extreem active dayjob ( working 14 hours a day with lots of dancing) you will start losing weight like a mad men.
Oh I am so tired of celebrity’s repeating these sort of statements! I work very hard to maintain my body at the age of 44. I am 5’5 and 109. I do not watch Glee but it is obvious this young lady has lost quite a few pounds. No she does not eat big italian meals or eats whatever she wants. For goodness sake ladies just tell the truth! You have to exercise alot and cut back your calorie intake. She looks awesome at this weight but I am soooo sick of the lying. Sorry for getting so aggravated.;/
Reallyyyy?!?!?
She eats, what a bomb!
I thought every single alive human being eats! What and how much, now that’s the tricky part.
Sarcasm aside, how can italian food be vegan? I’m quite curious. I mean true italian traditional recipes.
^^^this! I was about to say the same thing!
There are VERY few traditional diets that can be vegan is held to traditional recipes, but nearly EVERY recipe can be made to be vegan-friendly. I was a vegetarian for 2 years and vegan for 6 months. There are vegan variations of pretty much any italian cuisine you could want. Where did she say she wasn’t altering the italian food she was eating to be vegan-friendly?
If there is gluten-free bread in the world (and there is — it’s actually not that bad), you can bet your ass there is vegan italian food.
seriously what do celebrities take us for complete idiots? we can tell your lying b*tch, and you do not lose weight by eating whatever you want or else you look like over the 60% of America obese. I am 5’7 and I weigh 125 pounds and I work hard to maintain that and right I am actually trying to lose weight. I am person who basically has to starve myself and excessively exercise to lose the weight.
5’7″ and 125 lbs is great but yes, hard to maintain! I had to be very careful about everything I ate in order to stay there.
There is nothing in that quote which suggest that she eats whatever she wants and doesn’t have to work hard at keeping in shape. All it says is that she’s a girl who likes to eat. She probably does eat but works it off at the gym or just rehearsing for the show.
Because the skinny girls DON’T EAT EVER because they’re ANOREXIC.
God the ignorance.
[...] may be so, but Lea has definitely lost weight in between seasons – check out this post for yet another ‘I love myself’ quote from Lea and a Then & Now [...]
She is lying, or at least embellishing which is understandable in Hollywood in the entertainment industry no less. The pressure to look a certain way affects even the experienced and mature players let alone such a young woman. I do think her weight loss has been a little exaggerated, she doesn’t look THAT different and you have to keep in mind that some girls still retain some “puppy fat” even up until their mid twenties, it is normal to slim down somewhat and as somebody pointed out – the cast of Glee would be burning off insane amounts of energy to rehearse and film. Nonetheless I do wish starlets would be blunt about the fact that they DO give a crap about their size and DO restrict their intake and it IS a conscious and intentional effort to lose weight and maintain a size 0.
I call bullshit. There is no way she lost that much weight without trying to some extent..( unless of course she has some undisclosed physical or psychological problem). She is obviously dieting and making effort to stay that way. She isn’t fooling anyone.
What I find annoying is how people always support overly these kinds of celebrities by saying that there are people who are naturally skinny. A bmi of lower than 19 isn’t naturally skinny, its eat very little and or exercise skinny.
The only thing that matters is calories in vs calories out, plus of course the calorie source to some degree. Theres no way even with a super fast teenage boy metabolism you’ll be able to eat 4000+ calories and maintain a healthy body weight unless you work out seriously. And b seriously I don’t mean 40 minutes on the stairmaster, I mean high intensity cardio and WEIGHT TRAINING.
Celebrities work hard to look the way they do. Non celebrity skinny people work hard to look the way they do. Be it eating less or working out.
love her style.to the skinny thing: it doesn’t depend on your bmi-it depends on the body fat and the muscles you have.I have a bmi of 19,7 and my size is 36.Few years ago my bmi was 19 and I was a size 34 which isn’t really skinny.
Ahhh! She needs more photoshop if you ask me…
Humm… So she is skinny and looks great! I am Italian I grew up on the food and guess what??? I am still thin. She is small boned and it suits her beautifully!
Honestly, I am vegan and eat Italian food all the time. Pizza without cheese and meat, but with a lot of veggies. Whole grain pasta with just tomato sauce. It’s not difficult. She does eat, just probably a lot of veggies and very healthy. Probably also watches her portions too, but at the same time enjoys food. Not to mention she’s on glee and probably works out a lot off the set too. So yea, that’s why she is skinny, and being vegan you can totally make Italian food trust me.
ITALIAN-AMERICAN PRIDE *-*
