Lady Gaga joins the “Celebrities Who Were Bullied” Club – from the Daily Mail:
‘School bullies called me fat and laughed at my appearance.’
The 24-year-old singer admits she struggled to fit in at an all-girls private school in New York, and was frequently made fun of over her appearance.
She said: ‘I had a very big nose, very curly brown hair and I was overweight. I got made fun of.’
But while the comments undoubtedly upset Gaga, she admits it was her work and her musical talent that helped her cope.

as a PhD student who studies victimization among early adolescents I can tell you that there is very little proof that kids get bullied BECAUSE of their physical attributes. The superficial qualities may provide “material” for the bullies, but they are very rarely the cause of the actual victimization. It is very often personality characteristics that contribute to one’s likelihood of being a victim, like shyness or being quirky….The only reason I say that is because Lady Gaga was never fat, and her saying that minimizes real weight problems that other girlshave.
From a personal point of view i agree, i got bullied a bit at one point, and it was mostly bc i wasn’t friends with the louder girls at our school, and they only ever insulted me about my appearance, not my persona, even though i didn’t really have any particular things about my looks that would stand out. And like her big nose, i don’t think there’s anything ugly about that.. But she’s in a good place now, yay for that.

Agree. Gaga is definetly “quirky” so I’m willing to bet that’s what prompted the bullying, more so than her weight or the shape of her nose.
That’s not entirely true. I always had a lot of friends, I wasn’t shy or had other personality issues that made people make fun of me. I was a bit overweight, nothing much, but it seemed a lot next to my “oh-so-tiny-and-popular” friends so I was a bit bullied by other kids that didn’t know me. I was friends with the pretty girls, but I was never a pretty girl and people made fun of me. As I had a strong personality since I was little, I never cared that much or got into crazy diets to make it stop. I just ignored it. Today, my body changed naturally and I went from a size 10 to a 4 in a year and a half, without doing any special diets or exercice. Doctors said I’m fine and healthy, it must have been my body reorganizing to fit my small frame (I’m only 5ft2). It was never hard on me being bullied, but I knew people that got into depressions and crazy diets for being made fun of concerning their weight. I wish they take GaGa as an example. Life’s too short to worry about what a bunch of stupid kids think.

as a high school student i can tell you, you are completely wrong. I see nice kids getting made fun of everyday because of their physical appearance and nothing else.

And people DO bully others for being fat! my sister (last year when she was in the 4th grade) was bullied a lot cuz she’s chubby! the girls used to leve notes on her desk calling her fat and stuff (she goes to an all-girl school) my mom moved her to another school cuz my lil sister couldnt deal with it anymore (the whole class ganged up on her and they told the girls from other classes as well)
u dont get stretchmarks from loosing weight, but from STRETCHING skin in a short period of time due to growth. which means lady gaga’s breasts grew quickly at some point of her life – possibly puberty, not necessarily weight gain.
THANKYOU MIA! i understand that superficial qualities are easier to hone in on and tease someone about. But i am so sick of beautiful grown women going ‘oh, i was never one of the gorgeous popular girls at school’. At my school the popular girls were not the prettiest! They were generally the loudest, most likely to work in ‘packs’ and would change their behaviour to suit their peers whether it was for the good or bad (being nice or mean to other girls). There were the quiet ones that got picked on and they were just as physically beautiful if not more so with some of them. Its amazing and sad how we define ourselves so much by how people percieved us in highschool. Many had two different personalities too in and out of school. The popular ones could be popular at school, yet not in their workplace. The ones that were picked on at school were sometimes popular in their workplace out of school hours.
also, lady ga ga’s nose is prominant but i wouldnt say its ‘very big’. from what i have seen she has always been thin. also in my highschool many of the popular girls were bigger than the girls that were picked on. some just bigger in structureand some were actually overweight
I used to be fat as a child and I was teased for being fat. Not for anything else. However in my sophomore year (five years ago) of high school I slimmed down and the teasing stop. So I don’t understand how they can say that kids don’t tease you on your appearance.
And now she’s a skinny blonde posing in underwear and singing more or less naked all the time. I guess not only her “musical talent” helped her to cope with the comments.

I actually am the opposite of most people.
I think that she has an enviable face and a meh body. I like her face, but it does get sort of lost in all of the…I’m going to say glitz. There’s nothing wrong with her body, though. Like other, I doubt she was ever fat. I was bullied for being fat by kids that I was thinner than.
I was always heavy. I was “quirky” as well, but it was a result of the bullying. Even in kindergarten kids were mean to me for being heavy. When people are mean to you for a reason like that, you withdraw. I don’t think there is a heavy kid in this country (I mean heavy heavy) who isn’t/ wasn’t bullied. You can’t claim every heavy child has some personality defect that makes them a target and it has nothing to do with kids being cruel.
I don’t think anyone is saying that, of course you can be bullied just for your appearance too. And when it comes to personality, i don’t think you need to have a defect, all that is needed is to be different from the ones bullying you.

You can’t claim every heavy child gets bullied. In my middle school the most popular guy in our grade was chubby and he had braces. Nobody made fun of him, he had a cool personality and was hilarious. I, on the other hand, heard plenty of fat jokes throughout high school.
now true, I was a heavy kid(176 lbs @ 5 ft 6 in), but i was never teased, possibly because i hang out with the popular girls…

its funny how many celebs got bullied. jess simpson was called a lesbian and her house was spray painted. chad michael murray had his nose broken by bullies. megan fox hid in bathrooms during lunch because girls threw things at her.
its nice to see the bullied kids get the last laugh. most of people who get bullied really do not deserve it. i got bullied for being russian in a hispanic school. yep. kids are cruel
its crazy how when you are the loser in school none will think you will get anywhere, they think its the popular kids that could get famous, but history has proven otherwise
Your right how more of the ‘bullied’ stars (or outcasts, underdogs.. etc…) become famous in the end. I don’t know if its because they have been hurt badly and want to be accepted badly by others, or want to prove themselves, but I know someone who gets bullied often (we go to seperate schools) and all she wants to do is become famous.

I’m absolutely elated about her success which in my opinion is the best revenge and a big ass middle finger to the kids who bullied her. Also in my opinion I feel like bullies having being bullied for the better part of my life I am now in college is a happy medium (I know its an oxymoron) of classmates or kids not taking a liking to your personality for some reason which in turn is a catalyst or fans the fire for them to start making fun of your personal appearance. I know for me I’ve always been kind of shy and sheepish which in turn lead to me trying really hard to fit in and be liked……which unfortunately then lead to them making fun of my height I’m 6 feet and my weight I’m a size 12-14…….. like I’ve said before I don’t think people in my hs knew what to do with me because nor was I athletic or involve in any extracurricular activities nor do I look like Kate Moss. Even though I’m moving on and very comfortable with my quirks/awkwardness and my personality/looks people really don’t know how making fun of someone at someone elses effect can have a detrimental effect on them……… at times I struggled with depression and didn’t even want to get up from my bed. But what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and only led to me becoming a wiser person. I’m not saying this to get sympathy this is just my personal experience and why imo people get bullied. Also someone else brought up all the celebrities who were bullied and you can add the fabulous Beyonce, Marion Cottilard and Giselle to that list too. *hmph* *crosses arms*
I can relate to that,people are mean,especially the boys ,when you gain a little weight in high school.But know Im back to my natural weight.I think she is kinda ugly anyway no matter her weight.I dont thin she is a great singer just a good marketing product.

second, you don’t need to be medically overweight to feel fat. all you need is a bunch of mean girls in your ear and you may start to believe the hate their spewing at you.

Personally, I think half the celebrities claiming to be bullied weren’t. They’re applauded for being bullied and coming out of it stronger yet hardly any celebrities would turn around and say “ye I was the most popular girl in my school and bullied anyone I didn’t like” (I’m not saying being popular=being a bully but these celebs claiming to be bullied also throw in being different to the mix).

I was a chubby, shy, weird girl at school but I was never bullied. Sure, some people tried to say things to hurt me but it never worked, so they stopped. Most ‘famous’ people who talk about how ‘geeky’ and unpopular at school never were… Most people shy away from admitting they were part of the trendy group at school, it’s just not very cool or interesting.
She did look totally different before look up lady gaga boiling points on you tube.. She was on that show before she was famous, she changed alot

Klara: I can’t (of course) speak for any celebrity out there, & I am most definitely NOT a celebrity myself, but you can’t just automatically assume that any male/female “Celebrity” or even any regular (non celebrity) DROP DEAD GORGEOUS, and/or intelligent, talented, successful, etc adult person has “selective memory” & is LYING about his/her having been TORMENTED/BULLIED as a kid. (When you ASSUME something like that, you do a great disservice to those of us who might as adults “appear” to have it all, but who really WERE SEVERELY AFFECTED BY OUR BEING FREQUENTLY BULLIED/TORMENTED when we were young!) I just watched Lady Gaga on The View. Lada Gaga’s REAL PAIN came through in the words she spoke (particularly when she spoke the TRUTH that the “residual” feelings of being TORMENTED by your peers when you were a child remain with you for your entire life). Joy Behar turned to Lady Gaga & asked her (in a very puzzled tone), “Why were YOU bullied”? Why was I? I was a chubby, pretty, smart, creative, PATHETICALLY SHY, exceptionally tall for her age, little girl who TOWERED over every boy & girl in my class when I was in grade school (that’s why). Unfortunately, kids can be more VICIOUSLY & even VIOLENTLY CRUEL than adults, sometimes. I was a sweet, little, girl (who also just happened to be GOING THROUGH HELL with her abusive, alcoholic, stepfather at home) who was TEASED (by both my male & female “peers”), BEAT UP (although never too badly) by my male so called “peers”, chased home from the bus stop EVERY DAY by my male so called “peers”, near molested/RAPED by the older boys in my neighborhood (who also threw my pekingese into a shallow brook one day), & even nearly BADLY INJURED by a new boy at school. The other kids let him know that the “in thing” to do was to HURT ME. He threw a big rock at my head. (I was 9 years old.) It didn’t hit me, but it could have & when the so called “SMART” adults at school didn’t “get” the seriousness of what this little PRIC_ had nearly caused to happen to me, I ran home from school. “Authority” figures at my school were more concerned over the fact that I had had the utter audacity to leave school grounds during school hours than that the new kid at school had thought it would be “just hilarious” to throw a big, FKING, rock at my head. Lady Gaga was DEAD ON when she stated that the feelings produced deep within you when you were BULLIED as a kid NEVER COMPLETELY DISAPPEAR. (Lady Gaga was tossed into a GARBAGE CAN by her so called “peers” when she was 15 years old-WHO EVER GETS OVER BEING TOSSED INTO A GARBAGE CAN LIKE A PIECE OF TRASH?) I ultimately grew into a BEAUTIFUL woman (as in a “killer” body that I DEVELOPED via hard work & discipline, & a gorgeous face that I was BORN WITH). I also MIRACULOUSLY (since I grew up in total DYSFUNCTION at home when I was ages birth-17) graduated cum Laud from a 4 year university. I can write. I’m still pretty (although I no longer have that “killer body” I had 10+ years ago), & I have a BA in English, yet just like Lady Gaga said in regards to herself (& she’s a fking SUPERSTAR still in her 20′s), I frequently call myself a LOSER, but you have to understand that I didn’t just go through that HELL with my so called “peers” ridiculing me when I was in grade school. (In High School I pretty much was a LONER whom most people avoided but whom people also did not MAKE FUN OF to her face.) When I was a teenager, my psychologically ABUSIVE father pretty much made me feel like a worthless, nothing, unloved, unwanted, piece of SHI_ on a regular basis. So believe me (Karla) when men were (many years later, when I had managed to mold my formerly chunky, 5’10, voluptuous, bod into something spectacular AFTER I had graduated Cum Laud from college) calling me GORGEOUS, asking me things like, “Who took your self confidence away, & saying things to me like, “I can’t believe I’m even touching you” WHAT EXACTLY do you think was “running through my mind” at all times, Karla? You NEVER, EVER, EVER, forget it when you were MADE TO FEEL LIKE NOTHING when you were a kid-when you were an OUTCAST as a CHILD-when your classmates TORMENTED you for being different, & anybody who wants to try to tell me differently IS WRONG! Only those who were BULLIED as kids could ever truly “get” what REPEATEDLY experiencing something like that does to you! LADY GAGA “gets” it, Klara!
