Lady Gaga Brings the Quote of the Day
December 3, 2009 in Lady Gaga by Versus

On using her sexuality:
“My album covers are not sexual at all, which was an issue at my record label. I fought for months, and I cried at meetings. They didn’t think the photos were commercial enough…The last thing a young woman needs is another picture of a sexy pop star writhing in sand, covered in grease, touching herself.”
Lady Gaga in Elle Magazine
And one of her “cute little outfits”, in case you missed it:

More of Lady Gaga in Elle after the jump!

Come ON! Her covers may not be sexual, but her daily outrageous outfits? I get it, they’re futuristic art and all, but why splash with dirt on singers that choose to pose sexily on covers then?
Oh yeah, cause what “a young woman needs” is tape over nipples. And no pants.
HYPOCRITE.
hahahahahahaha! so true.
who is she trying to fool? Like we can see your nipples and your butt, and you tell us what a young woman needs? pffffff!
She’s not a hypocrite. If she doesn’t want her ALBUM COVERS to be sexual, that’s actually admirable. She’s doesn’t think it’s right for anyone to PURCHASE something on which she’s half naked and covered in baby oil, which, is not a natural state for a young woman to be in anyway.
When she’s out and about she can and should wear whatever makes her happy. No one is criticizing you for wearing anything en mass, are they? Didn’t think so. I support her stance and think it’s a breath of fresh air. She’s an artist, not a pop star. There’s a distinct difference that few people seem to understand. Gaga, you better get it girl!!
everybody has nipples and a butt, grow up, she’s just not slutting herself up though
I admire Gaga for her stance in not using her sexuality to be the selling point of her albums. Just because she wears less than modest clothing in her day to day life does not make her a hypocrite. Though is she saying only young women buy her albums? That confuses me.
I think she meant to say that that last thing someone needs is a woman in the sand covered with grease etc…
She’s such a troll.
yeah…and her music used to be good…but its like a monster now
)
she has lost SO MUCH WEIGHT!!!
Well in her defense, she always claims that she’s try to be the type of sexy that isn’t conventional…she said in several of her interviews that she wears bizzare outfits because she wants guys to question what they find sexy or not.
To me sexy is sexy, whether conventional or not. I’m just explaining the reasoning that I think she believes, and because she thinks conventional sexy is different than weird sexy, it’s makes sense for her to think she is different from other singers.
Agreed!
Agreed.
her face is ugly, I guess that’s the reason she wears that kind of clothes; to get attention anywhere but her face lol
grow up
but her face IS ugly!!…
Agreed, it is ugly.
Her face looks really pretty in the last photo, but I don’t really like the crotch view. XD
I think it’s funny how she can wear something like tape over her nips or her other outfits and it is considered “out there” or over the top and yet it’s acceptable for Sports Illustrated to publish numerous pictures of “models” with nothing on but painted bathing suits. What exactly is the difference? I like the idea of questioning people’s ideas of what “sexy” is, even if it results in outfits that make people cringe; perhaps that’s the point.
Please read my comment below. There is a VERY BIG difference.
I think I was referring more the reaction different looks get from the general public (like you pointed out people even questioning the fact she is a woman), and you pointed out good reasons as to why people react to her and her look. I think what you said was correct and a correct interpretation of the things lady gaga said.
However, I think I personally would side more with the people on here that say that naked=naked=naked regardless of what the exact outfit/ideology of a person or group of people is trying to portray because, at the end of the day, she is still a slender white woman dancing in a see-through leotard.
I LOVE her.
why does she always have her stupid mouth open
are her teeth too big for her to close her mouth
she’s gross.
They didn’t think the photos were commercial enough? Ha, she IS commercial to me. Everyone wears leotards and weird outfits nowadays, just look at Rihanna. Please, she’s really nothing original.
.. but she started it
Hahaha… she so did not! Roisin Murphy was doing it along time before Gaga, and Roisin wasn’t the first either…
I don’t know, everything about Gaga seems so contrived- what she says, does, and obviously what she wears. I don’t like her at all.
neutra-EXACTLY! That’s what I meant.
I think her main point is that she fought to put what she wanted on her album covers, whereas some of those artists albums that feature a “sexy pop star writhing in sand, covered in grease, touching herself” may have felt pressured into that because their labels think that is what is commercial.
I’m obsessed with Lady Gaga – luv her
Say what you will about her outfits / makeup, she got herself noticed and her name remembered and you have to give her credit for that. I don’t necessarily like all her outfits, but I think that’s part of her appeal – seeing what she’s wearing next.
I really did not like her until recently. And like some other commenters i considered her face ugly. However, sincer this new hair she has and since she stops covering her face in bizzare manners, i don’t know, i almost find her beautiful. She sure is an unusual appearence and especially these photos from elle are really nice. And i think her quote is more about making her points be accepted rather than doing what the producers think is sexy and so on. I agree with Casey how gaga promotes this unconventional sexual appeal. And it works, i guess.
I don’t think any of you really understand what she means.
Of course she is “sexy”. But it is in no way a traditional “sexy” of a popstar… this is why heterosexual men don’t find her attractive like they did for Britney or Christina, why they call her “ugly” or a “freak”….
hetero men, and a lot of hetero women, sadly, like only one kind of sexy. The kind that is safe for them to oggle over, the kind of sexy that is designed with what men like it mind.
Lady gaga does NOT dress the way she does to get men to find her sexy. She just doesn’t. Whereas the rest of the female population, and popstars, are sexy in that way.
Lady gaga is sexy in a way that she owns her sexuality and she doesn’t care if other people find it hot or not. She’s not out there trying to turn guys on and become a sex symbol for men to put in their maxim magazines.
That’s why there was so much controversy over whether or not she was a “man”… I mean come on. She is clearly not a man. But any women who is outrageous, outspoken, fierce and in charge of her own sexuality, and doesn’t submit to what men want them to look like and be like sexually, is obviously a “man”, of course. No “real woman” would do that.
sigh.
VERY well said S.
Whereas the rest of the female population, and popstars, are sexy in that way.
That is so uncalled for! I mean yes i agree with you, but not this statement. Lady Gaga is not the only female in the world who goes for this unconventional sexuality. Some are even more outrageous. Just go to a local goth pub. Or a huge metal fest. Or something. I go to such places, i know that kind of people, heck with it i am one of those women who wear pretty dresses with biker boots and believe it or not there are hetero men who find that sexy and i am damn sure there are hetero men who find LG sexy as well. Sexy is in the attitude, to begin with.
Agree with you Uma
Sorry Uma.
I must correct my generalising statement, and you are absolutely right…
I was attempting to respond to the women who were saying that she is “not hot” or “ugly” or “she is the same sexy, just like all the other popstars”. In my passionate response, I focused solely on responding to these women in particular, who I consider to be the majority, without addressing women who do not share these views.
There are many hetero women are gaga-like (teehee) and do NOT simply try to embody the kind of “sexy” that is dictated by men’s preferences.
I still believe that the majority of women still perscribe to what they hope men think is sexy, and that is why they are so shocked and appalled by lady gaga. That’s what I meant to say.
I apologize for that broad generalisation, it wasn’t what I had intended to say.
Oky, all clear now
And i completely agree with you,my sole problem was with the generalization.
yep u r right
yeah, ppl say they’re either a man or a lesbian! it’s so immature and primitive. well done s.
Personally, I see this as having double standards.
Her album covers may not be sexy (never seen them myself) but her stage outfits, though unconventional and slightly Damian Hurst-ish, are quite sexy (and I have seen these). She often exposes her butt and emphasises her chest and bare tummy.
It’s as though she’s saying it’s not okay to be overtly sexy on your album but it’s okay to be so on stage or when going out in public, like the latter two are better than the former. Either medium is going to expose sexual clothing to young women.
If you really didn’t want to be extremely sexual with your image then you would avoid it not only on your album covers, but in your stage outfits, photo shoots and daily dress.
So she can champion herself for not being sexual on her album covers, but given her sexuality elsewhere, it doesn’t really say much
please refer to above comment made by s.
Yes, I read her comment.
Personally, I don’t see why the rules should be different to those who are ‘unconventionally’ sexual. I get it; she’s saying that Gaga’s comment refers to her not using the cliched sexy images on her album covers. Fine. But what makes her think that dancing on stage with her booty hanging out, in ‘unconventional’ clothes is any better?
Just because she’s not doing it to get other men to find her sexy, as s. says, doesn’t make it any diiferent from any other popstar that sells sex.
I think the same. She is barely dressed all the time, but because it’s “weird”, it’s not sexy? I don’t think so.
Actually it does make it different.
By being sexy in a way that doesn’t submit to men’s preferences, she is breaking all female popstar stereotypes (and female sexual stereotypes in general) in a positive way.
Britney spears dressed up in a school girl uniform and gyrating while men oggle and say “wow what I wouldn’t do to her”, teasing, titillating sex in maxim is very different from Gaga…
Gaga’s in-your-face and freakish sexuality scares and turns off most of the heterosexual men (and apparently, women) I know… and even makes them think she is a man! (what does that say about our views of women’s sexuality in society in general? that a woman who is sexually aggressive is somehow “manly?”)
I think the negative response gaga has had from people has a lot to do with the fact that her sexuality does not follow the “rules” of male-dominated sexuality, namely, she isn’t being sexy in a ways that guys have traditionally liked.
And I think its a good thing.
I’m sorry, I still don’t see the difference. Running around half nude all the time is STILL and will always be running around half nude all the time. If she wanted to be so different and not be seen as sexy, she would go onstage in a parka and snow boots, covered head to toe.
lc I completely agree with you. Although I understand where s. is coming from, at the end of the day it’s all the same.
And to me Gaga is so boring, SO terribly commercial and obvious. I don’t even know why I am commenting on her.
I’m sorry, I don’t care how freaky she dresses and how unconventional she is. Her “music” (noise) sucks and she bores me to death.
In short, I am not fascinated by her in any way, shape or form.
I feel the same. I don’t see the hype.
i don’t get people who call he/she beautiful they must be blind all aside apart from stealing other peoples looks that aside i don’t find this girl /guy remotely attractive it has an ugly face and looks old for its age and body wise its not sexy ive asked straight males what they think of her none find her sexy but gays love he/she so i guess its a gay guy he/she seeks
I’m just waiting for the day where nobody HAS to talk about sexuality anymore. It REALLY is that big of a problem in our society today, and sexual addictions are ever-increasing because of our media and what people think is “ok” sexuality. Whether or not Gaga is owning her own kind of sexy, we need to shift our minds to intelligence, not sex. Yes, sex sells, so Gaga’s choice to not make it a selling point is commendable. I just wish this could translate into countless other mediums for countless other artists. It’s really sad that young women and even adult women think that if they don’t dress or act a certain way they might lose a boyfriend or husband to some other girl who will.
Yea really, You’d think there was more to life then endlessly chatting about sex?
nailed it
I can’t tell what lady gaga’s weirdness comes from; is it just for attention? is it a commentary on attention whoring? is it just who she is?
I don’t care so much what it is, I love how much argument comes about whenever she appears, I love how good of a performer she is, and I love that even though she has a big nose a lot of men I know find her attractive. It makes me feel better about my big nose.
I don’t get this trend….dressing in ridiculous scantily clad outfits. Does anyone wear pants anymore? Why are most pop stars running around in scary, skimpy contraptions these days instead of clothes?
I really like her BECAUSE she is not hot/pretty/Barbie copy&paste and yet she found success.
And I support her because guess what, if I want to listen to music, I want to LISTEN to MUSIC. I don’t want to LOOK at the singer. I don’t want a soft pornesque music video. I don’t care about their stats and their favourite perfume and dog breed.
I don’t care if the person who sings it is 300 pounds, ugly as sin, and has a beard and ovaries at the same time AS LONG AS they got the pipes, and the talent.
Isn’t everyone SICK and TIRED of bimbos singing shitty songs with mediocre talent, and getting famous for looking hot, and then getting filthy rich for it?
I mean – haven’t we all been PWND by Susan Boyle, appearing in all her middle aged spinster glory, and yet the girl can sing damnit. But of course, without the shock factor, she wouldn’t stand a chance. In fact, I predict that if she was just a bit prettier, she would be forgotten, despite her voice.
So next time you see some kind of artist and think: “Is she ugly…” => WHO FARKING CARES
Did any one actually read what she said? ““My album covers are not sexual at all, which WAS an issue at my record label. I fought for months, and I cried at meetings.”
So basically she gave in to what the record companies wanted. She has no integrity, she does what she is told. The fame and cash are obviously more important to her than any concerns or reservations she may have.
wat the hell are you talking about. you should reread what she said. she DIDNT give in to the record label cause she got what she wanted. they wanted her to be sexual on the covers but, as you can tell, her album covers arent sexual at all. and the “WAS” that you emphasized, thats what it was, it WAS an issue because its not anymore because she got what she wanted and didnt give in.
