Jewel Is in a Bikini, Was Called “The Chubby Renee Zellweger”
June 17, 2010 in Jewel by Versus

Jewel is a bikini cover girl on Shape magazine this month – and she has a lot to share about dealing with criticism, her diet and the pressures to look thin:
On being called “the chubby Renee Zellweger” in the media years ago:
“My feelings were so hurt by that story, I ended up bingeing on an entire cake. Afterward, I actually tried to throw it all up, but thankfully I couldn’t do it. It made me think, ‘I can’t go down this road.’ I had seen so many performers develop eating disorders or try to control their weight with drugs, and I decided I would do no harm to my body.”Her advice to women:
“We should be more like men, God bless ‘em. They can take their shirts off and show their man boobs, and they don’t give a hoot. But women are so critical of themselves. We can be gorgeous and hot and still be embarrassed to wear a tank top. So if you can’t stop looking in the mirror, at least try to not think badly about yourself when you do.”
On her diet:
“I try to stay away from an all-or-nothing mentality when it comes to food. It’s like a pendulum: The more extreme I am–like saying, ‘I’m not going to eat any carbs’–the further it’s going to swing to the other side and I’m going to binge.

i totally get her
im a self conscious girl
I think she’s bang-on.
The magazine cover looks so different than the candid pics. Ah the miracle that is photoshop.
Did she change her teeths?
awful, awful boob job. a typical refund gap. too bad she felt the need to “improve” her chest,.
Some people have a naturally wide space between their breasts. IF she did have a boob job, it wouldn’t suddenly provide her with extreme cleavage anyway.
im pretty sure she didnt have a boob job though…she always had big boobs…and in the candid photos it looks like they are real. They are different sizes even! and dont look perfectly round and pert. My boobies are so far apart! it annoys me! its like they hate each other! I have dd’s and i cant even get any cleavage because they refuse to meet! lol!
but you could be right about her boob job! i really have no more clue than you =o)
I didn’t have a boob job. This picture is photoshoped, and in every candid I’ve seen of her her boobs look very natural. And she’s always had a large bust.
Also, she never seemed to care that much about how she looked.
if she never seemed to care about how she looked then why does she talk about bing eating?
“I ended up bingeing on an entire cake. Afterward, I actually tried to throw it all up, but thankfully I couldn’t do it. It made me think, ‘I can’t go down this road.’ I had seen so many performers develop eating disorders or try to control their weight with drugs, and I decided I would do no harm to my body.” that sounds like someone with low selfesteem and someone who cares about how they look.
+ her crooked teeth is also fixed to improve her looks.
just look at the link camille posted.

if you see pics from 94 she is flat, then she’s sporting a d-cup later on, and years later she has small breasts again that is drooping. my guess is that she went for a boobjob in the 90′s, takes them out, sagging tissue, gets another boobjob and that’s why her boobs are so lumpy and uneven. she should have done a breastlift while she planted in new implants.
i’m totally with you… i just think they look like implants because she looks like she has scars and they seem to sit SO UNNATURALLY in her chest, they even look somewhat SQUARE to me… i don’t care about the validity of the websites, i call it how i see it.
I remember when she first came out in the 90′s she was flat as a pancake. The boobs are new.
i am pretty sure she DID have a boob job:

Think that website is a terrible source of information regardless of whether she actually got a boob job or not.
Age, weight fluctuations, a properly fitting bra, etc, all affect how our boobs look. It’s as if the minute someone looks different, that stupid website insists they must have had something done!
but even if you look at the 2008 and 2009 pictures… those are some wild wonky boobs, i cannot imagine a real pair of breasts behaving in such a manner.
I don’t know if she had a boob job or not, but real breasts come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They can be assymetrical, wonky, mishapen, close together, far apart, pointing up to the sky or down to the ground, boobs are wonerfully diverse!
wonderfully*
I’m with you on that one. My breasts can look from a ful B up to a small D depending on what bra and top I wear. And mine have a noticeable gap between them too, so that really isn’t any indication for breast implants.
Plus Jewel seems to be an apple shape , ergo lots of weight loss and gain in belly, boobs and arms when her weight is fluctuating.
wow. I love her honesty about the binging. Most women, let alone celebrities won’t admit to that type of eating disorder. Good for her!
Chubby? With a figure like that! Must have been a while back…..
i know, she wasnt even chubby! i love her comment thugh and can sooo relate! i am like that with tanks or jeans etc. its ridiculous how critical we are! but its hard to not be
The only thing that bothers me about what she said is that there is a difference between developing an eating disorder, a MENTAL issue, and going to drastic, unhealthy measures because you’re upset with your body.
She could have actually been going down the path of developing an eating disorder, but usually, eating disorders are a result of a lot more than wanting to be thin because you’re called chubby.
Many women become upset with their bodies as a result of cruel comments, and then decide to imitate the things that people with eating disorders do, without suffering the mental aspects of the eating disorders themselves. That’s what I feel like is the case for, and I don’t like her using the words eating disorder because it doesn’t portray an accurate picture of the disease.
I’m sorry but the difference you are making seems non-existent to me. I’m not saying having an eating disorder and going to “drastic, unhealthy measures because you’re upset with your body” are exactly the same thing, but the latter is certainly a very, very common symptom of the former.
I understand that you say some women go through the occasional binge or extreme diet without having the mental issues behind an ED, but when you go to such drastic measures to destroy your body, there IS a mental issue behind it. And yes, EDs are triggered by problems in other areas of people’s lives, but that doesn’t mean they don’t also involve major body insecurities/self-loathing.
(Oh and Casey, this is by no means meant in an unfriendly way! – I agree with you that all women who feel hurt because they were criticized for their bodies are not suffering from an ED, but there is something self-destructive about forcing yourself to eat an entire cake that to me is a clear sign of it.)
Well eating disorders all start somewhere. There is always that first time you make yourself vomit. I’m bulimic and I sometimes think if i stepped back and didn’t do it that first time I wouldve been ok because it is an addiction that gradually takes over your life.
Jewel’s words about women are 100 percent true. Men more then half the time could care less how they look, but women are terribly critical of themselves. At least I know I am! Whether I’m very thin or not I always find something to be self-concious about.
She looks great! Photoshopped or not. Jewel doesn’t seem the have a typical HollyWEIRD body. She looks like a regular girl who is healthy and fit. It’s so refreshing to see.
Infact, when I’m more in shape my body is a lot like hers. Kind of wide in the middle with a flat belly and shapely, kind of big, but toned thighs. Unfortunately, I’ve gained some weight in the past months, but this is definitely inspiration to get back to where I was!
Versus, any idea what type of body shape Jewel has?
Jewel is a beautiful person, so down to earth with the right mentality. She is also a very talented performer. She seems like a great role model because she doesn’t change herself for ANYONE and is being true to herself. You go, girl!
I think she’s somewhere in between vase and ruler – she is proportionate, not bottom heavy, not upper heavy, with curves, but not dramatic ones.
I’m also tired of celebrities talking about the value of empowering other women, and how women should accept themselves, who then appear on magazine covers, heavily Photoshopped. Clearly that ‘s not her body on the cover and it’s once again an image which few women will be able to attain.
Practice what you preach, sweetheart.
They don’t choose to be photoshopped, the magazine does that on their own.
You took the words right out of my mouth. I’d like to ad that women are hard on themselves because of men–god bless ‘em, lol. If you are like me and have days when you really need some makeup to look decent but decide to go without it you’ll probably notice men interact with you way differently and are less likely to open doors for you, treat you with respect, etc. We are jealous of other women b/c the prettier one is the better men treat them. Women don’t generally treat guys drastically differently from each other unless it’s a completely nasty-looking or acting one. That’s life.
actually i dont think the picture was overly photoshopped at all. she twittered a picture of her in a bikini a while back and she looks very similar just maybe a few pounds heavier which is no big deal because she probably worked out a bit harder to look more in shape for the shape magazine cover.
There’s got to be some photoshopping, considering it’s a magazine cover but evne in candids her body looks spectacular.
i know there is some but i think it was very tastefully done and she still looks like herself unlike some of the other magazine covers ive seen where i cant even recognize the celebrities on them because theyve been photoshopped beyond recognition
she looks great! really good muscle tone.
She has beautiful collar bones! Not broken as a dancer would say. She looks good, kind of has a weird misection though. As for her comment regarding carbs, I fully agree. If I say it to myself I won’t eat something, I end up doing the opposite. It’s better just going about the day not thinking about it!
wow, she is right! I thought she has nothing in her blond head
but she sounds believable.. it is as if I heard my self talking …
Love her attitude! and her comment about the difference in men-women attitudes toward their appearance, totally agree, we women are always too obsessive bout nearly everything, and make mountains ouf of molehills
i mean i know of course there are all these ubersexuals, metrosexuals and other “sexuals” that obsess over their appearance but these are the minority
I love Jewel
I don’t think she was ever “chubby” by non celeb standards and I also think she is far more facially attractive than Renee Zellwegger.
She’s spot on. I can totally relate to what she’s saying and i think a lot of other girls can too.
she should lose more weight imo
those thighs arent nice..or stomach for that matter
Now that’s a wise advice!
[...] another positive note…Check out how honest Jewel is about HER struggle with binge eating in this month’s Shape magazine: [...]
I think she’s gorgeous.
