Gwyneth Paltrow: ‘The reason I can wear a bikini is because I work my ass off’
April 13, 2011 in Celebrity Quotes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Hollywood Moms by Versus

Gwyneth Paltrow looks great in a bikini (even though Daily Mail totally disagrees) and she tells us why:
“The reason that I can be 38 and have two kids and wear a bikini is because I work my [expletive] ass off. It’s not an accident. It’s not luck, it’s not fairy dust, it’s not good genes. It’s killing myself for an hour and a half five days a week, but what I get out of it is relative to what I put into it. That’s what I try to do in all areas of my life.”
… says Gwyneth.

Wow! Kudos for that comment! So true haha
Finally an honest comment from a celebrity about how they maintain their figure!
I totally agree, she was honest and it’s the first celebrity I read who doesn’t say it’s genetics and that she can eat whatever she wants to!! I wish that I could get to 38 and be as in good shape as she is now!!! I care about what I eat and i work out every single day even on weekends plus I do yoga so, even in my family we are thin I know if I don’t take care of myself I’ll gain weight immediately so it’s not always genetics, you have to help your body to be healthy and fit ! There’s no magic, just loving the way you are and having self-control
I eat whatever i want, whenever i feel like, i work out 3-4 days a week. My physique is banging, i don’t gain weight, i dont need to overobsess about foods. And I Love it.
So to all you little bundled up nerves of stress, your attitude about working out and eating affects how you eat and train, but most importantly it affects how your body is going to respond to your mindset.
Example, your stressing out about getting fat, you don’t eat too much and you work out alot. Your bodys constantly responding to the stress, building up to anxiety if its extreme, and since your on a low calorie diet…your body will try to absorb and store fat whenever you have some (fat).
I dont mind gwyneths body, she looks good, but it’s achievable for anyone, without the hassle.
so true!
Everyone is different. I work out minimum an hour a day 5-7 days a week (not exaggerating) and eat 1200 – 1500 calories daily… and this is just to maintain what I have. On the other hand, my sister-in-law considers a peanutbutter sandwich a pre-workout snack and she loses weight.
Outstripped: totally agree with you!
You totally missunderstood what I said, and I appreaciate you don’t call me a bundled up nerves of stress, luckily I FEEL COMFORTABLE THE WAY I AM! AND I LOVE MYSELF, I DON’T HAVE ANY KIND OF ISSUES, is just that you are what you eat, and I prefer eating healthy, treat my body with respect (cause like Billy Blanks says: your mind and body is your temple) and whenever I feel Iike, I go and have something I like without feeling guilty … I eat ice-cream, cakes, cookies, but once in while just when I want to, not everyday, I choose a different lifestyle that’s all, but that doesn’t mean I’m bunch of nerves!
Didn’t Gweneth come out and tell people about how she was in the early stages of osteoporosis? Her doctor said it was because of a too strict diet. Hopefully she’s on top of that and is taking some major calcium and vitamin d supplements.
Yes, she did. Because of her healthy eating and exercise regimen the osteoporosis more than likely is genetic.
I actually read that following a microbiotic diet (as Gwyneth did for a long time) leads to an early on set of osteoporosis
I read this too, I think her body is malnourished. If you have osteopenia at her age and are supposedly healthy, you’re not doing something right.
that’s my girl!
finally someone honest
she doesn’t have an ass. also she is missing her boobs.
http://www.thesuperficial.com/gwyneth-paltrow-in-a-bikini-02-2011/0220-gwyneth-paltrow-bikini-05 actually, she does have an ass
she worked it off, duh
At least she’s not overweight and unhealthy. As you get older, you usually have to make a choice. Do you want to be muscular and slim but not have pronounced curves, or do you want to avoid working out to keep those curves? I think she looks great.
Not necessarily. I am slim, athletic and very curvy. It’s genetic but I get what you’re saying.
I’m not sure if you’re Gwyneth’s age, but I kind of meant 40+. Anyway, there are definitely some people who can maintain an athletic and curvy body (I can, but I’m still young so it’s different), but with Gwyneth’s body shape and type I think it’d be almost impossible.
i’ve never heard anyone say that before. and actually Gwynneth has more curves here than she ever did before. remember that flapping oscar gown? or watch her in Seven. i think the working out is new and may be part of her taking care of her osteoporosis, but she might be looking the best she ever has.
Hmm, well that’s been my experience. My mother is 50 and she was slightly overweight after having eight kids (only slightly, but she was unhappy with her body). She decided to start swimming, and she almost immediately lost weight and gained muscle. I think right now she’s 5’8″ and around 130 pounds, so she looks thin but muscular. Anyway, she used to be very curvaceous when she was younger (big boobs, a soft, slim body), but now she does not really have a voluptuous shape, as she works out and wants to maintain a tighter figure. I guess there are people who become curvier as they age (I’m not talking about people who gain weight as they age, but people who continue to work out), but my mother is also not as muscular as Gwyneth. Maybe if she did her workouts she would have more curve to her body.
who cares about ass and boobs? she has a nice shape/form, she has nice legs and abs, i would rather have that then big boobs and butt its not all about that.
She has always had a slimmish rectangle shape, small breasts. Gaining weight won’t transform her into an hourglass body type.
Boobs and ass do NOT make a woman.
Sorry- that was meant to be posted further up! :/
yeah she LITERALLY works her ASS OFF …
Honesty is really refreshing
And while she is too skinny for my taste, she has the best legs I’ve ever seen (that sounds really contradictory, but whatever) GO GWYNETH!
FINALLY a celebrity who just doesn’t say “Oh, I eat hamburgers ALL THE TIME and neeeever exercise!” Because we all know IT’S A LIE!
“FINALLY a celebrity who just doesn’t say “Oh, I eat hamburgers ALL THE TIME and neeeever exercise!” Because we all know IT’S A LIE!”
Actually I’ve found that most celebrities talk about dieting and working out. I don’t get why people are under the impression that all/most celebrities are saying they do nothing to stay thin. That’s really not the case; maybe you guys are just focusing on those individual comments.
And no, we don’t all “know” it’s a lie. In fact, I know for a fact it can be true. I believe most celebrities when they say they are naturally thin without that much effort, and I believe celebrities that say they work their a** off. Why? Because quite frankly I’m not with them 24/7 and it seems kind of paranoid to think they are all liars? What exactly do they get out of lying that they don’t exercise and don’t eat clean? “OH WOW SHE IS THIN WITHOUT EVEN WORKING OUT OMG SHE IS SO PERFECT.” Who says that? Therefore how is the lie worth it?
You get more positive feedback admitting you’re working out than you do admitting you don’t, so I think it’s more likely to claim celebrities lie about how much they exercise and how clean they eat than anything.
Well said Casey! There are certainly celebs who talk about eating whatever they want and being thin anyway – but it’s definitely not all of them. In fact most of them talk about how much they work out and how strict their diets are. And I agree that it’s unlikely they are lying – why would they?!
actually I find they do both. like Minka kelly a few posts ago- one minute she is saying she eats like a man,and eats bucketloads of chocolate and the next listing a diet barely 1200 calories of egg whites and veggies. I remember once reading an interview with Jessica Alba where she did both at the same time: started by saying she was just really lucky and genetically blessed, then talked about how all her family were fat and she learnt to cook cause she didn’t want to be the same and finished by describing her three hour workouts!
people get confused. then of course there is the Public Display of Appetite. every interview with a clebrity these days seems to involve them sitting down to eat some ridiculously high calorie food and gorging before they begin chatting.
A lot of them do, though, if not all. Models are notorious for it. I just read something where the interviewer asked the girl about concern over her weight (wish I could remember the name. Not Chloe or Candice!), and she launched into an explanation of how she had chips and pop for breakfast, then pizza pockets, etc. Then she said she never worked out. Like, “oh, who me? I’m just perfect, teehee!”
I guess I’m just annoyed by people who don’t work out and eat clean and brag about it. lol. Not that I think it’s irresponsible. Just that it seems like a weird thing to brag about – as you said, it only provokes a negative response.
I don’t think it is pinpointing individual statements. There are numerous examples of celebs that say that they have to put in minimal effort to stay slim, only to retract that statement later on, or to say that they are naturally when they were visibly heavier when they first entered the industry and have lost weight since.
Nor would I say it is paranoia to disbelieve these statements. We’re not around them 24/7 so we have no idea what their eating patterns are however by we, as the public, have insights into how PR works. As you yourself have shown for an example in regards to celebs saying that they work out for more positive results. They tend to say whatever will work best for their image or they say the truth. We cannot tell. For some celebs they want to give the impression that they are naturally their size for admiration and some say they work hard for it for the exact same reason.
Sometimes people snap and target celebs unecessary however sometimes it is a simple case of weighing up what they say based on facts regarding health and fitness and how they market themselves and feeling frustrated if they notice inconsistencies and errors.
She has a great body, good that she’s honest haha!
I wish I had the time to do all that exercise! Although I’m not a fan of her body I think it’s nice she’s being honest about how hard she works to maintain it
She’s gwyneth Paltrow how much ‘time’ do u think she has? U can make time for whatever u want to make time for.
that’s BS. I think celebrities are for the most part LESS busy than the average woman, and they have the resources to pay for child care, thereby creating time for them to go to the gym and work with personal trainers, which is something the average woman cannot afford.
There may be times in her life (like when she’s shooting a movie) that she is super busy, but she also takes months and months off between projects, and even on set there is a lot of down time that allows actors to go to the gym and work out (essentially working out on the job).
Just because she’s not shooting a movie doesn’t mean she’s not busy lol celebrities are constantly doing interviews and press plus tv appearances etc. I know lots of women are very busy, I am one of them, but u just make time to do the things you want to do. Most gyms are open from 5.30 in the morning and stay open til fairly late mine is 9.30pm, so there is time to go, you just have to want to make time for it in your life.
so if you’re a single mom and want to go the gym at 5:30am and can’t afford a baby sitter, what do you do with your kids? leave them at home by themselves?
and, let’s imagine you’re a single mom who works a minimum wage job and live in an urban area, do you really think you can afford a gym membership to begin with? not only that, but many poor urban neighborhoods don’t even HAVE a gym, so you would have to take public transportation at 5am to get a gym while your poor kids are left at home unattended.
sorry…normal women have it a lot harder than celebrities do, you’ll never convince me otherwise.
@ Mia (it didnt say reply to your comment):
No gym reallllly necessary, really
I work out an hr. and a half a day most of the year (i get lazy a bit in the winter) and I don’t belong to a gym…and actually kinda dislike them.
I speed walk/jog in my neighborhood and do Tracey Anderson videos at home. I totally respect and understand the difficulty those living in urban centres (etc) have with regards to access to childcare and recreational centres for exercise and activities. Yet if you’re motivated you can make it work.
P.S. Gwyneth’s PT is/was Tracey Anderson. She’s awesome – has like 4-5 DVD’s out now that are pretty killar. I was super sore the first BUNCH of times. Youtube her too as she has son free sample floor and Butt routines you can check out and see if you like her. (I think the Butt routine video might also be on GOOP – I think from last Dec/Jan)
I agree. I’ve always thought that celebrities were twice as busy as normal people (though training would be part of that, part of the job). Dunno why people always say celebs have so much time on their hands.
And really, who (maybe besides a single mom with two jobs) doesn’t have time to work out? U ALWAYS have half an hour to go for a run – it’s free and takes no time! No excuse.
When i don’t take that run everyday it’s simply cos i’m lazy, or find it boring, it takes a lot from me to actually get out of the door and go running. But it isn’t time and money that’s stopping me!
I half agree actually, cos it must be easier and more efficient with a personal trainer (taking that run 6 times a week won’t give me Gwyneths body, that’s for sure), but it’s not impossible without.
And JN1976, thanks for the tip
Might try Tracy’s videos someday….
I highly doubt that a celebrity is more busy that the average working or domestic individual.. Their schedules just sound more busy because they are more glamorous – interviews, photoshoots, filming, presentations, travelling, etc. However a woman her age with two kids working 9 – 5 will probably be juggling just as much if not more. Obviously we can’t say for certain that celebs or non-celebs are more busy than the other, it will depend on their schedules. I can imagine an actor in demand, presenter or athelete will be quite active whereas a reality star or not so in demand actor/actress wouldn’t. Just like a working person or housewife/husband will have their hands full but someone not in work or working part time wouldn’t. Though I would like to reiterate the point someone made that celebs are at least more likely to have the finances to help lift the burden of duties (childcare, housework, PA, etc).
I’m nor saying it’s not tougher but I’m saying it not impossible. There’s other ways to exercise other than gyms… There’s a thing called a road, that you can jog along, or you can exercise at home with a DVD or get some free weights. It’s about prioritising. It’s not just about looking good but also about feeling good and being healthy.
You can get a kick butt workout at home in very little time. I’m in LOVE with this woman: http://www.bodyrock.tv
@Versus: Could you please do a post on Zuzana, the woman behind the bodyrock webpage? She has the most amazing physique, and I think you could call her a celebrity due to all her followers around the world. =D
Well time for working out can be incorporated into her ‘busy’ times i.e if she’s been hired to be her current size for a movie then they’ll say something if she doesn’t maintain it so time can be allowed for her to work out.
I personally would not want to exercise for an hour and a half a day, my college work and part-time job to save for my accomadation next year mean more to me and those can easily take up 7am-10pm in my day (unfortunately!)
I study and work, both full time and still make time to exercise. it’s important to me so make time for it
I’m not saying it’s easy but if u really want to do it you can.
shitloads! You ever been on a movie set? you have any idea how much downtime they have. fourteen hour days sitting around doing the occasional two minute take. . Julia Roberts learnt to knit to pass the time
and yeah they will provide a gym for you.
I know I can’t believe anyone would think that celebrities have LESS free time than “normal” people!
Her regime sounds a bit too intense for me to be honest. However, I congratulate her on being honest about her workout regime instead of blathering on about her metabolism that works at the speed of sound.
Her honesty is great, but I also see something else in her comment not so great: you can only wear a bikini if you’re thin/toned ?
Bikinis are produced in all sizes imaginable, and every woman who WANTS to wear a bikini should wear it, whether is she fat, skinny, with big/little bust, with cellulite or whatever.
i’m so glad you said that, because i think the exact same thing! you don’t need to work out 1.5 hours a day/5 days a week to be seen in a bikini. First of all, who besides a rich celebrity has that much time to work out? and second, why should women put some pressure on themselves before going to the beach? men get to work just bottoms and i don’t see many of them being embarassed by some jiggly parts.
I think it’s fine if she wants to obsess over having a perfect body, but I hope she’s not passing these messages on to her daughter. Of course working out and eating healthy is important, but moderation is also important in addition to having the ability to relax every once in a while!
Very good points, Mia.
Who is she kidding if she doesn’t think there’s luck involved in being able to spend 1.5 hours a day with a personal trainer?! Not many working mothers have that kind of time let alone disposable income. It’s SO SO SO much easier for you, Gwyneth.
(sorry for all the spelling errors before..tired)
I agree, it’s alot of time to put in, not everyone has or cares or needs to make it
Me…I’m a few things, short, small chested and a bit ADHD…I NEED to exercise
(and usually love it if not right from the beginning then after 5 mins into it)
You’re taking it out of context. She’s been snatched for being “too skinny” etc, etc… On Daly Mail they where harsh on her.. So she’s talking back at them…. She’s not saying that someone with fat on their bones cannot wear a bikini.. She says she’s human and she likes her body like that so she works for it!! That’s just it
Ginger, I’m talking about her claim that “It’s not luck, it’s not fairy dust” that allows her to look fabulous all the time. I think that’s wrong. She’s disconnected from the reality of what it is to be a working mother. She’s EXTREMELY lucky to be able to spend that much time and money on working out. And I’m offended she’s implying people who don’t look like that mustn’t be putting in the work. Genes also play a big part.
Well I agree with you in this one… LuckilyI got the time to work out hard.. because I like to.. but not everyone has it… Not everyone can.. Even if they want to…
I thought the same thing at first, but reading everything, i think she rather meant: Even though i’ve had kids etc i can still wear a bikini and look like THIS because… Not that u shouldn’t wear a bikini if u actually look like a mom her age
At least i hope that’s what she meant…
Sort of. I thought the same thing, but I tried to avoid reading that into it, because I don’t think that’s what she meant. At the very least, the body she’s promoting is fit, not just skinny.
She forgot to add that she probably eats less than 1,000 cals a day…..Tracy Anderson is notorious for putting her clients on ridiculously restrictive & low caloric diets.
“She forgot to add that she probably eats less than 1,000 cals a day…..Tracy Anderson is notorious for putting her clients on ridiculously restrictive & low caloric diets.”
She wouldn’t look the same as she did. I think given her strict exercise routine, she can eat as much as 1800 calories and still remain that thin, as long as her 1800 calories come from lean low-fat sources because she doesn’t look like she has very much body fat.
@ mEEE: I’ve never hear such drek, really.
Gwyn isnt THAT skinny, she just is super lean-fit and has no boobs so her upper looks like she could gain a lb or 2. She def ingests way more calories than that.
“Tracey Anderson is notorious…restrictive diets” – no she’s not. She encourages people to eat Clean, get your facts. She is part of the reason Nicole Richie is looking great; fit and lean and healthy…not overly skinny/ill-looking. It’s about a healthy balance: Exercise to produce LEAN muscle mass (this takes high reps so it takes longer, and Clean eating (enough so that you feel great, look great – i.e. in the skin, hair, brightness of eyes – and can bend the rules when you think it warrants to).
Check out: Clean by Dr. Alejandro Junger – he’s amazing (a functional medical dr. = Western and Eastern/Naturopathic). This actually involves ingesting a lot of fat per day BUT healthy kind: Olive oiil, avocado, nuts/seeds, coconut milk/meat etc etc….bc it’s good for the brain and spinal chord, eyes, hair and skin not that OTHER OTHER fat that causes skin to sag and therefore cause bad cellulite, clog arteries, promote wrinkles, clog pores…………
Pinky, I don’t think she meant it that way–I think she was kind of joking, saying that even after having two kids she could wear a bikin [without feeling insecure] because she works out so much
Now I’m jealous!!!
I really admire her for what she does, I love her acting and I wish I had THAT body!!!
I’m so jealous because she’s 38, has had 2 kids and still looks like that with ONLY 1 1/2 hrs of working out!
I work out likt 2-3hrs, 5-6days/week and still got 23% fat in my body!!! x_x
Seriously… What else does she do?
It’s all about how you work out, she does Tracy so not one second is wasted. An intense workout for 30 minutes is great, she does an hour plus that. And I’m sure she eats minimally.
and let’s not kid ourselves, genes play at least SOME role in the way her body responds to exercise. Clearly there are some people who work out as much as she does and will never have her particular body shape and composition.
Don’t forget that she has access to the best trainers, nutritionists, personal chefs etc that money can buy. You as a normal person are probably not going to be able to duplicate her lifestyle, it’s just a reality of life!
I would hardly call Tracy “don’t use dumbels heavier than 3lbs or you’ll be bulky” Anderson the best trainer in the world. I know people who achieve fantastic bodies by lifting heavy for 20 minutes a day,
She says that?! Pfft. I lift/move over half my body weight sometimes and I’m not bulky!
ha ha that made me laugh.
Don”t beat yourself up over it. There are different ways of being 23% body fat, which btw is PERFECTLY healthy. If you are not skinny fat, and have muscle on you, 23% bf is BETTER then how Gwyneth looks like. A woman needs muscle and working out to have strong bones, and fat to have a healthy reproductive system (which then influences everything in your body).
But in case you work out a lot, but only as cardio, I definitely recommend doing strenght training mainly.
But 23% body fat is really good. Honestly, it’s not like Gywnth is 17% body fat or anything. She’s lean/trim but not super defined, probably around the 20% mark. I think it’s just her tall willowy frame giving the illusion of having a very low body fat level.
so honest, love it
exactly.
I love her figure she is slim, toned and healthy.
I don’t understand people who think she is too thin.
She is toned and in great shape.
She must eat REALLY unhealthy if she needs to exercise that much to stay thin. My mom is 48, has had 2 kids, and is skinny without having to exercise so much. The only exercise my mom really does is power walking about 3 miles everyday. However, she eats A LOT of fruits, vegetables, salads, legumes, and whole grains with not a lot of fat.
Congratulations, your ignorance has actually made me defend GWYNETH PALTROW. Thats no mean feat.
People have different bodies. Obviously, your mum is predisposed to being thinner, many women are not.
Also, she actually has a fair bit of muscle. she’s not bulky at all but she’s not just skinny. that takes work to keep that muscle UP. She might be even THINNER without the exercise she does.
Actually my mom is not predisposed to being thin, she was thin when she was young, but she gained a lot of weight after giving birth to me and my brother. She was overweight throughout her 30′s. She started a low fat vegan diet at 39 and her starting weight was 180. She is now about 130. 90 minutes of intense exercise 5 times a week is a lot just to maintain your weight. That is the type of exercise needed to lose weight, not maintain.
if you believe this nonsense about being pre-disposed to being thin, then of all celebrities out there who might be considered to be that I would think it would be Gwyneth Paltrow. she has always been skinny, even a couple of weeks after giving birth. The only reason I think she is getting this fuss is that she looks curvier in her bikini than a lot of people expected. I think she actually has a nice shape despite all the nasty boob less and butt less comments.
No offense but I doubt your mom looks like Gwenyth Paltrow in a bikini. Nor would she need to, because she’s not a celebrity being photographed all the time! But Gwen is constantly in the limelight so there’s pressure to look not just skinny but perfect. Eating right can keep you skinny, but 99.9% of the population is not going to get a body like Gwen’s without working out hard too.
No, my mom doesn’t look like Gwyneth Paltrow, but she is ten years older! However, my mom is thin and toned, and she looks great in a bikini. She has a little cellulite on the back of her thighs, but she is almost 50! On the bright side, her cellulite is no where near as bad as Mischa Barton’s was a few years ago, and Mischa is in her 20′s and has never had children like my mom.
How do you know what her mum looks like? I saw a woman in her forties the other day who had a body so good that every WOMAN in the area was ogling her. She had the most amazing shape, just enough boob, a gorgeous pert bum and lovely natural olive skin. I wish people would stop acting like celebrities are something extraordinary. they are not the gods of mount olympus, yes they can afford a lifestyle out of reach of most people but their genes are still human.
if there was a like button, I would “like” your comment
people do act as if celebrities are greek gods, but in reality if they weren’t famous they would look just like the rest of us..they don’t work harder than any of us, they’re not smarter or more talented than any of us, they’re just humans!
I’m not gonna play doctor, but your mom should incorporate weights, especially as she gets close to 50. Just for bone health and maintaining muscle mass.
My mom started strength training when she was in her mid 50s and it did so much more for her than just walking, which is still beneficial.
I thought she looked great when the first picture was posted, and I still think she does. People may criticize her for being overzealous when it comes to her diet, exercise, or lifestyle, but I admire her dedication. I don’t think I could ever keep up with that type of strict lifestyle, but she knows what she wants and goes for it. I think it’s admirable that she was able to say she works for her figure instead of acting as if it was handed to her in the form of a high metabolism. It’s easier to have respect for someone when they’re not afraid to tell the truth.
Ok, people, I don’t know why when a celebrity says she works out you all get so happy and comment on her awesome honesty, and when somebody else says they eat all they want and stuff it’s assumed that they are lying. Just because she needs to work her ass off to look like this doesn’t mean every other celebrity is lying about it. This is a woman who is 38 and has had kids, many 25 year olds can get away with eating hamburgers and not doing much. And I think most older celebrities admit they exercise a lot…
Also, an hour and a half of exercise 5 days a week, when you are rich and have all the time you need, isn’t that much, you get use to it… I’d be happy to dedicate my time to that instead of other stuff I don’t care about…
GENES is why she has no boobs or booty. You pretty much have to be thin to work that kind of figure….imo.
Its weird how so many celebrities lie about how they’ve got good genes. Maybe they want us to think their superhuman or something, but Gwyneth’s comment makes it feel like I can relate to her cuz I work hard at the gym and its nice to know celebrities have to do the same and they’re just like all the rest of us.
she looks just thin. I would expect with that amount of work out she’d be muscular or strong or something. I do think that amount of working out is pointless. Like, you get so hungry you just eat more and you’re back at your starting point. You only need a half hour for cardio health. She must not have much to do!
Her body is quite obviously sculpted and at 38, to keep your body firm and retain muscle you have to do more than just cardio. If all she did was cardio, she would probably still be slim but with sagging skin. Also, an hour and a half out of a day isn’t a long time at all. It’s a very decent amount of time to get in a good whole body workout.
Anyway kudos to her. I’m not a huge fan of her figure but I can appreciate the effort and honesty.
That amount of working out is not pointless and you need more than cardio to stay in good health, especially as you age. Resistance training is also recommended. I am her age and I do both.
you can do a full body resistance workout in less than 30 mins. Working out that much is a waste of time, once you go past the health benefits. It is good to get your heartrate up, but it doesn’t have to be for an hour and a half. It’s good to do load bearing exercises but it doesn’t have to be an hour of pumping weights at the gym. Most people don’t even get enough sleep, which equally as important. Besides, she said she ONLY does it so she can look good in a bikini! That is pointless.
okay so i think it does depend on genes….not to look good but im not as thin anddd i excercise more than 1.5 hours a day for 7 days a week because i dance ballet, and im not stick thin as she is….i dont see this as working my ass off though cuz i really enjoy it. My point is Im healthy looking girl toned and fit but not stick thin because of all the excercise.
I actually like her a lot for being honest. She just won major points in my book.
So true! and very honest. Go Gwyneth, she looks hot. The hard work pays of for her.
So is she saying that whoever doesnt work out 5 times a week and who doesnt look like that cant wear a stupid bikini???? Hollywood is messed up. so is society.
so, the article was saying that she is neurotic and a control freak, and her comment, i think, is enforcing that statement. she has children, but takes 1.5 hrs out of the day 5 days a week? also, she only eats between 500-700 calories, how does she raise her children to eat when she herself is unhealthy? does she teach her children to only eat half a days worth of calories?
1.5 hours out of the day isn’t that much… if you think about it, it’s time for YOU … it’s time to focus on yourself and everyone should take at least that amount of time off during the day to focus on themselves imo.
I agree, especially she stays up for longer than the kids ( idon’t remember thei ages). Depending on your job and general life, it might be hard for some to find those free 1.5 hrs, but i don’t see it as selfish if for the rest of the day you’re there for your kids etc.
I wouldn’t call it selfish, but 1.5 hours is a lot if it’s not part of your job. Lucky for her, it is part of hers. But if you’re actually working for 9-10 hours a day and actually want to have time to spend with people you care about and sleep, then 1.5 hours a day is a lot to work out. And why does she need 1.5 hours a day to focus on herself? Is the rest of her day spent slaving to other people? I doubt it.
As a mother, the best thing you can do is keep up your workouts. You can have children and have time for yourself.
Although I think working out for 1.5 hours a day is a little unnecessary for most people, it is what she needs to do to maintain her figure and I admire her dedication to it. 40 minutes would suffice for most people to maintain a good level of fitness and body fat – but she is very lean, so it takes more if you want to maintain that.
1.5 hours away from her kids is not neglectful! It’s not like her kids are breastfeeding still – they can be away from their mother for a couple of hours a day, I would say that’s quite normal in today’s world. As for her passing down her obsessiveness to her kids – we all have our quirks and obsessions and kids are likely to pick up on them. But eating restrictively and working out a lot are not the worst obsessions to instil in your kids! I would say a mother who eats lots of processed crap and doesn’t do any exercise is a more harmful influence in the long run!
As for the 500-700 calories – she’d be very sick indeed if she ate that little! She wouldn’t have the strength to dress herself, let alone work out for 1.5 hours!
good for he with being honest about what she does. hard work is paying off. not all of us have personal trainers and that much time a week.
I love how she doesn’t try and make it seem like she eats whatever she wants, exercises every now and again… etc. she’s actually honest about what it does take to get a nice body. I think she looks amazing and anyone who says otherwise doesn’t appreciate hard work and dedication… no her boobs aren’t huge and she doesn’t have a huge ass but not everyone is built that way
Well, her efforts are certainly paying off. She looks fantastic imo.
…and because you’re rich, rich, rich, rich, rich, rich, rich.
You don’t have to be the breadwinner and do 80% of the housework and take care of not one, but TWO, elderly, handicapped, and mentally ill relatives while you try to squeeze a few minutes from the job you hate and the health food that takes forever to prepare so you can attempt the one thing you really love and really want to do…write a novel.
No, you were the child of two people high up in the entertainment business, so everything was really easy for you, and you don’t have to worry about all I have to worry about, therefore you have time to fuss over your diet and do nothing but exercise.
The celebrity world is not the real world, people.
ya everyone knows that come on,, but shes not ganna say like omg people im so rich you guys could never look like me muhahaha! no she has to be nice
she could say part of the reason she’s that skinny is because she’s been so BLESSED in her life, both by being born in a rich family, AND because of her genes which did not give her anything to fight against.
Sorry, but she totally alienates me with her comment. Have some humillity ffs.
I think that’s true for most celebs though..I rarely hear them appreciating their fame and fortune, if anything they are always complaining about how hard their jobs are. I guess that’s why I’m so fascinated with them, becoming rich and famous is like being part of a social experiment in a way…makes you wonder how you or people you love would be if they were in that situation.
Totally agree. She makes it sound like she worked so hard for everything she has, which is total bullsh*t. I think she has a nice body, and good for her for working hard on it, but I despise the way that she is completely ignorant of her own privilege.
PS, do you know how much food 500 calories is?? It’s nothing. Nothing.
You might as well starve.
lol totally! 500 calories is liek 3 chicken nuggets
Same with me. Only I have to workout 7 days a week and stick to a very strict diet. But I look better then 99% of the females in this world so its worth it. Its hard work and I don’t eat what I want but I look amazing. Plus food is not meant for fun. It is meant to survive. You should never eat just to eat.
“Plus food is not meant for fun. It is meant to survive. You should never eat just to eat.”
Actually, anything that has to do with our survival is inherently pleasurable. Odd fact, but eating when you are hungry, drinking when you are thirsty stimulates the same parts of the brain as do drugs. It is why drug-taking is such a reinforced behavior by our bodies…because our bodies are basically tricked into thinking drugs are necessary for survival.
But anyway, I think a better saying would be that one should not eat out of boredom or emotional difficulties. But one should certainly eat to eat and eating is and should be an enjoyable experience, not a chore that you do so that you don’t drop dead.
There are so many fundamental problems with this post. I’m sure you look great, and good for you for being happy with yourself, but do you actually measure it by how much better you look than other women? Congratulations for perpetuating one of the most problematic aspects of how women are encouraged to relate to each other. And, according to whom do you look better than 99% of women? You took a poll? I’m not sure if you’re trying to be offensive or you can’t help yourself.
she is stunning..
I love her. She seems to have got it right; working out and really taking an interest in cooking healthy foods yet not too fanatic (at least that’s how she comes off, one never really knows though lol). It’s always such an inspiration when a celebrity promotes healthy living, but still admits that it’s hard work and nothing comes for free. Have any of you checked out her website (Goop)?
It upsets me a tiny bit when some people have commented she has worked her butt and boobs off.
I suspect even if she gained 30lbs she’d still have small breasts and a less defined butt. I mean I have no boobs and a small butt. .. so does my mum & sister. Nothing to do with weight.. some women don’t have them!!
I am 40 with 3 kids. I work out 90 minutes a day [running and other stuff - some from Tracy Andersen ironically] about 6 days a week, and I don’t look like her! I think she must also eat 800-1200 calories a day because I eat about 1800 cals a day and am much fuller looking. I really do not see how people do it without surgery. There has to be some good genes involved or mixing no eating with the workouts.
kjd,
do you count calories? because if you just guess how much you eat a day you’d be surprised to find that you probably eat more then you think. Maybe that’s why.
And Running is great to lose weight, but to get that lean shape you have to lift weights.
I have to say first good for her for being so determined to stick to a routine, although I do find her figure too thin for my liking…but, okay, so, what about the people who bust their ass working out and eating right, and still don’t lose weight? It really frustrates me when people say “better than being overweight and unhealthy” Okay, well you go tell that to someone who is “medically” overweight who has a strict diet and works out 5 times a week, but can not lose weight due to a medical problem…lets say underactive thyroid. You can be overweight with a healthy heart, YES, it is possible. I think it is bull that as soon as some people see someone “heavier looking” they automatically think “oh they are unhealthy and fat”…sometimes, there are circumstances people! There are just far too many prejudices against womens bodies out there…and yes while men and media play a large role in this….we as women are just as much, if not more, to blame.
Oh, and no…I am not promoting obesity or anorexia or any other things out of left field some might assume(:
When I said “at least she’s not overweight and unhealthy,” I just meant her, I didn’t mean everyone in the world, and I especially didn’t mean people who have trouble losing weight. It’s obvious that she easily loses weight and gains muscle, so what I was trying to say was at least she takes care of her body and takes advantage of the fact that she can maintain a good weight and have a visible amount of muscle instead of being lazy and not working out in her free time (since she has the free time, I’m not criticizing anyone who is too busy to exercise)! I was just commenting on that because the first poster was criticizing her for not having curves, which don’t immediately come with weight gain anyway. Sorry if I offended.
I adore Gwen and her discipline. She’s not just about being skinny and going unhealthily about it. She’s someone who I find is a great role model that I hope to elude when I’m her age.
wow, 107 comments about gwyneth paltrow in a bikini!
obsessed much
come on! even if someone is 300 pounds, they can wear bikini… it’s not like there is a law about it, right?
I think she should chill down a little bit. geee, if I had her husband (Chris is in my top five cutest british guys) I would be enjoying life like a queen. I don’t mean overeating or stuff, but there are ways how to take care of yourself without being obsessive or ‘working your ass off’.
but after all, at least she’s honest and not pulling the crap about fast metabolism and so on
Finally, an actress who ADMITS to working hard for her hot body and not ‘just good genes’ or she’s slender/fit because she ‘chases the kids around’ or ‘just so busy’ and just happens to fall into great shape.
Her body is amazing and like every other thing in life, you have to deserve it

i adore her figure… long, lean, blonde and a body made for “dancing”
One of the girls in the office is her double, but married
I love her body! What kind of work out does she do, though? An hour and a half a day does seem a bit unnecessary. I mean, if it’s a kind of exercise you really love and you have the time, knock yourself out… but 90 minutes a day is not necessary to stay slim/have the amount of muscle tone she’s rocking. Again – her figure is in my opinion pretty awesome and I don’t think she should be trying to change it… I just wonder what her 90 minutes are spent on. Seems like you could up the intensity, be out of there in 45-60, and have the same results. Then again, maybe things changed for her after kids/when she was no longer in her 20s? I’m 25, and already noticing a difference in my returns from working out/eating healthy.
beautiful and honest!
