Helen Mirren Opens Up About Nude Photo-Shoot

A few days ago, we were surprised to see 65 year-old Helen Mirren nude in a magazine – See the highly comented post HERE! - and we talked about the tangency between sexiness, age and nudity. After dealing with some criticism as a result of her naked shots, Helen replied:
“I like the photos because I thought they were naked in the proper sense of the word naked. I’ve got very little make-up on. There’s no elaborate lighting. He just used a flash. And it’s simple and it’s real. I think that was the intention of the photographs.”
“They weren’t intended remotely to be sexy, I think sex and nudity are really two different things, you see, but then I’m a bit weird like that. Sometimes nudity is sexy. Sometimes it’s not. Sometimes being clothed is more sexy than being nude. I think people tend to get the two mixed up.”

I think she’s 100% right. Power to her for not being put down by society!
Ditto. What she says sounds very thought through. Intelligent , beautifull woman who ages with grace. We need more of that kind.
Totally. It’s a weird American/Religious repression thing…Here in America, people are repressed, yet sex is everywhere. Nowhere else other than the Middle East have I been where naked= sex!
yes and that is the great irony.. USA and the middle east so (politically) opposed to one another yet so similar in odd ways…

She’s right. Too often nudity and the body itself is associated too much with sex and nothing more. I wonder if this is also why some are so uncomfortable with others’ bodies as well as their own?

i agree that sex and nudity are not the same thing. i also think that naked photos and nudity are not the same thing, especially with arms arched above head and nipples on show. An intelligent woman would know very well the kind of controversy and press that these photos would generate. thats what this is all about. But i will agree that the fuss is stupid considering the images that are everywhere.
Oh please. Go to a nudist beach. Nudity is just that. Nudity. With testicles, penises, nipples and vulvas all in plain view. Of all ages, sizes and shapes. And nobody cares.

A similar phrase could have been said in the 19th century about anything. Wearing pants for that matter. It took a bunch of crazy women wearing pants because they wanted to, and creating controversy so we could all wear them if we chose to.

Nudity is naturally provacative to many people that is mainly due to natural link between nudity and sex as well as people’s imaginations.
Nudity can be very expressive in more innocent ways, art and science for examples. I’ve seen many pictures or paintings of nude people that are very creative and non sexual.
These photos of her are a lot more innocent than the ones we saw of Taylor Momsen (or whatever her name is) dressed as an C18th tart.
She is so right! Nudity censorship provides no purpose. I don’t want to go my anti censorship rant I went on before. But let’s use an example. The nudity porn is not unethical however it actions that should be held morally responsible. The greatest works of art are nude and we consider them beautiful and elegant. They are put in the greatest places of religious worship. In fact in Italy, home of the Vatican, breasts are not censored. In Canada, women are allowed to go topless. In these countries, children are not harmed in their development in any way. Nudity is not wrong, we are born nude. We should not be ashamed of how we were created. The traditional mindset of be ashamed of yourself from Adam and eve tale is unhealthy and should be abandoned. People repulse in disgust just of the thought of anyone being nude but do even question why? And people wonder why the States has the highest rate of low self- esteem. We thought to “cover up” and be ashamed of your body from a young age in socialization. There is nothing sexual about the nude body; it is the attitude and the actions of the person. I okay did rant a bit but only to illustrate a point:P

100% agree. Also the brits and americans are so prudish when it comes to nudity….in europe it’s much more accepted.
Britain might not be as liberal as some parts of Europe, but it certainly isn’t equal to North America. You won’t get a nude woman in the newspaper in North America or get to see nudity when character in films or TV series are having sex, whereas you do in the UK. I also found no one cared when I went braless in Britain, but North Americans were horrified. I may as well have been wearing dynamite around my waist, threatening to kill everyone!
i really doubt you ever went to the usa, majority of the girls especially in l.a go topless and get paid loads of money for going topless as well. It’s called the playboy mansion every year thousands and thousands of(average normal everyday) girls apply and pose to nude to just get a chance to do it. Maybe you were talking about Canada? because i’m sure it’s not the u.s.a

ewww, im sorry but i think we should all act according to our age. at 65, an age when were near death, i wouldnt go off showing my body. especially, lets accept it everyones body looks like shit after their 50s.

I have mixed feelings about seeing an old naked woman but obviously it is my decision to look at that sort of picture or just flip passed it. everyone has the right to embrace and love themselves and i praise her confidence i just dont want to see sagging boobs until i’m 65
