She definitely seems mean. Just like her body shape shouldn’t be relevant why does she need to make Katy Perry’s or any other slim singers body shape relevant? I would be annoyed if I read a comment like that about myself. Just because someone is fit and likes to play up their well earned body doesn’t mean they are talentless or trading on their looks alone. Her comments come off a bit snotty. And maybe a tad bit frustrated and petty. It’s just as rude to make snide comments about slimmer figures as it is to make comments about heavier people.

Well, it’s pretty simple. In the talent department we all know who wins here..not Katy.
Her comment seems a bit snide, but I can understand what she means. It seems like “musicians” end up famous because of how they look, not because of their talent. In my opinion, there are way too many famous “musicians” that have absolutely no talent and people just rave about how hot they are and what crazy stuff they’ve been doing. I’m not a big fan of Adele’s voice, but I definitely praise her for her originality and her confidence. Keep doing what you are doing!

Here in England we hear about the untalented Cheryl Cole types all the time and yet hear very little of the Adele who does have considerable talent. Admittedly I don’t especially love her voice, but she can sing very well, her performance at the Brits was terrific!
The music business and media seem to have their priorities a little off.
The problem is, the majority readers probably don’t want to the Adeles, they want to see the Cheryls. The media produces what it thinks will sell best, that just happens to be Katy Perry scantily dressed rather than Adele. It’s not Katy’s fault this is the case and she’s entitled to use this to her advantage; if the public changes then maybe we’ll see Adele on the front of magazines.
It kind of makes me sad that all people want is to look at half-naked people. It really makes music seem so trivial. I’m in music school and I am constantly surrounded by classically trained singers who are just incredible (and sing way better than I ever will). Then I turn on the radio and I just think O_o what is this supposed to be? Gyrating and auto tune =/= musical ability.

I don’t know much about Adele, but Florence Welch is another talented singer/songwriter with a great voice – gives me some hope after all the Cheryl Cole’s and Katy Perry’s and their style over substance.
I mean, there’s a place for show(wo)manship, but most of us don’t actually see the shows, we just want to listen to the music – and I can’t really listen to Katy or Cheryl because it’s just not very interesting or pleasant!

I wasn’t attacking Katy personally, but it is pretty obvious that she is not the most talented person out there. She is average at best. Her lyrics are not difficult, inspired, or meaningful – they are basic things that most people could come up with. Her voice is also below average, IMO. On SNL I could barely listen.
By the way, I think it’s very fair and true…sorry if you don’t think so, but that’s your opinion. What’s not fair is girls with more talent than Katy Perry getting passed up for talentless, attractive girls.

I believe this is genuine. I know girls with bags of confidence who have never let weight dictate how they live their life, and never been treated badly because of it. I envy that confidence. although ultimately even I have to admit I want to look a certain way as much, if not more, for myself as for anyone else.

Not to down any one’s opinion or anything but all of these people saying Adele has an attitude, sounds unpleasant, etc. just sound insensitive and ignorant. Sorry to use such a harsh word but it’s true. Lets take this situation and put it into everyday terms. The woman at work who wears a size 2, has excellent hair, skin, and teeth, and an hourglass figure to die for gets to be president of the company. The “perfect” woman isn’t half as skilled as you yet she moves up the ladder because of her looks while you’re stuck making 30k a year. Now wouldn’t you have a rocket up your ass had this happened to you? Exactly. So cheers Adele I agree 1000% talent is a dead thing now a days. I guess I can understand why people would think she’s being judgemental toward Katy Perry, but I personally don’t believe she’s specifically targetting Katy. Of course, Katy Perry is a pretty good example of what Adele is talking about (even though I do like Katy’s songs, but I’m not a huge fan). I’ve personally never really heard any of Adele’s songs, so I don’t really have an opinion, but I think she has a really good point, and I like her spunk.

Well said. I agree that “sex sells” and people who are pretty and have nice bodies may get their foot in the door faster, but talent and good attitude keeps you there. While Adele has talent her comment doesn’t make her seem very nice or confident here. It’s always better to just let your talent do the talking for you.

But whenever overweight people don’t seem bothered by their weight, I always hope some day they will change their attitude about it, not for superficial reasons, or for anyone but themselves, but just so that they can become healthier and live a longer life, which is what everyone deserves.

she’s an amazing singer. she sounds good live which is more than i can say for most pop singers out right now and she makes it look effortless. besides not having to show her t*** she also doesn’t feel the need to wear crazy outfits and pull publicity stunts to get people to listen to her music. that to me is a breath of fresh air in an industry that seems to want to make every new artist a different version of lady gaga.

Well, the problem with comparing her to Lady Gaga and not someone like Katy Perry is that Gaga is not classically good-looking and she’s actually very talented. You don’t study music at Tisch School of the Arts (and write all your own music) if you don’t have some measure of talent. Katy Perry on the other hand is just part of the machine; digitally altered, horrible live and “hot”.
I find Gaga to be incredibly manufactured, sorry. I don’t care where she studied music, to me, she is a product; all hype and no substance. Her voice, to me, is like one notch above Katy’s terrible one, though. Besides, she writes her own songs? I have to agree with Aria on Gaga, although I usually agree with you lc! She’s always been one of my favorite artists, not because of her personality, but because of her songs, which are just insanely catchy. I do think she has a good voice, because I saw her in concert, and she was perfectly in tune and sounded fantastic, which is rare with modern-day singers. I know people who have gone to Katy Perry and Taylor Swift concerts and can’t say the same for them.

I’m not the biggest fan of Adele but i like her music. She’s pretty and maybe it helps but i gotta agree with her. With so many popstars, Katy Perry included, i’m left wondering if they can actually sing, bc it’s all about the autotune and yes, boobs and sexy clothes and expensive music videos and in general just overprocessed sounds. After seeing said popsingers “live” (on tv) i usually go with “no they can’t sing” or then i’m still not sure. At least with Adele, you can tell very easily what sort of a voice and talent she’s got. I’m not too thrilled about her naming names though, it would’ve been snarky enough without the example.
I kinda like Rolling In The Deep. It’s the only song of hers that caught my attention, but I can’t say I find it groundbreaking or anything. Sounds a lot like Dog Days Are Over by Florence + the Machine.

you know? people say sex sells now because that’s all you see but then again sex has always sell. in some way it has. if you look at madonna, prince, janet and others that came before gaga or katy, they have used sex to sell. the difference between back then and now is that back then, you still had artists like whitney, toni braxton, michael jackson, luther, and others that weren’t about sex. it was a balance. nowadays all you see is ass and breasts. there is nothing wrong with selling sex because honestly, it’s not a problem, well to me it isn’t. what is a problem is that you have to use sex these days in order to have a hit record. and that’s not fair to other artists who want to make music. but hey things like this always happen. the industry expects you to be the same and when you want to stand out, you’re not recognized for your talent. i will say we still have artists like alicia keys, mary j blige, neyo, janelle monae, bruno mars, etc, that aren’t about sex and more about their music. i never listened to adele but she does seem talented.

Let’s be real: sex has always sold. However, back in the day there was talent to go with it. The Backstreet Boys were known as heartthrobs but they could actually sing even if you didn’t like their music. Marilyn Monroe was a bombshell but she was also a good actress with a sweet singing voice These days we seem to have a distinct selection of singers/actresses with little talent and great looks and those that aren’t so conventionally attractive but with bags of talent.

The music industry is about selling “products” nowadays, not music, art or passion.. a lot of the singers work like models do… they come as a blank canvas, and then they are “made”, everything is ready in advance (musics, lyrics, image, target audience, ..), it’s a lot of preparation and most of them actually make it work and know how to sing, the result can be enjoyable, the music can make you wanna dance and all, but how the singer looks is a big part of the show, and there will always be something missing in the songs, like soul, emotion, passion.. (I hate my generation)
I just googled her and watched her sing,…. yea, she doesn’t need to lose weight or anything (maybe to feel healthier, in shape, just like anybody would want to, but it has nothing to do with her career, and it’s her own business anyway)… the girl knows how to sing and has a nice voice, she doesn’t need to change anything to be successful in her work

Why does her comment annoy so many people? It’s true what she said… most singers these days dress skimpy, push up their boobs, photoshop themselves, all that to look good and ‘sexy’. What does that have to do with making music? I understand that people are trying to have an ‘image’ of their own and it was indeed original when madonna did it. I think Adele is beautiful and it doesn’t matter what she looks like because she makes MUSIC. She’s not a fashion model and she doesn’t have to be thin. That being said, I’m not an idiot and I know that if she was slimmer she would most likely have a bigger career. Not that she doesn’t have a great career now but she might be offered jobs as the face or spokesperson for some fashion house or beauty product.

Her comment about Katy Perry does seem a bit rude, but I think that’s just because of the way it was worded.
I don’t think she was implying that Katy Perry and artists like her rely only on their body/physical appearance, I think she was just stating that they CAN rely on it. Artists like Katy Perry could very well be recognized for just their talent, but ALSO for their appearances. Katy Perry has a lot of fans for the way she sings, but we have to admit that she DOES have a lot of fans because of her body. Adele probably doesn’t feel that she’s getting the same kind of attention as Katy is getting because of her body, but still has as many fans as she could hope for, if not more, regardless of the way she looks.

In my opinion Katy Perry does rely a lot on her appearance if you look at her posters, music videos, album covers, etc. I’ve seen multiple videos of her live performances and she has a mediocre voice at best. I have also seen many videos of Adele performing and she sounds amazing live. Also I don’t believe Katy Perry’s song lyrics have much substance’ especially on California girls. ” daisy dukes, bikinis on top, skin so hot we’ll melt your popsicle” real inspiring.
Good for her. Being fit and being a slut are completly different things. I like Katy Perry but she like every other girl singer. Tits popping out…perfect example…Britney spears Cant sing…why does she sell so many albums? Beyonce cant sing either… Cause girls WANT to be Them. Go Adele! I love her and I truly would rather have my children look up to her then Katy Perry! Though I do admire her strong character and superd voice, I wish I could agree with her saying it’s all about the music, because, unfortunately, it’s not. So many of the “teeny-bopper” singers nowadays are living proof of that. When I say “teeny-bopper”, I mean people like Miranda Cosgrove, Victoria Justice, and so many Disney Channel actors and actresses that get record deals because they have a certain physical appearance [it's not like they got their acting job solely for their "great" acting]. And take people like India.Arie and compare them with someone like Beyonce. India’s music has much deeper meaning than Beyonce’s, but she’ll never be as big of a star because she doesn’t have a physical appearance like Beyonce.

She shouldn’t be pressured to lose weight. No one goes to her concerts to see her shake her butt on stage or look good, they come to hear her beautiful voice. Anyone who says differently are clearly ignorant. She’s one of a very few singers who actually has the natural ability to sing.
And I personally think she’s beautiful, even if she is overweight. Her face is stunning!
