I posted this question under the Hilary Duff post, however, I figured I better ask it again under the most recent post if I wanted any answers sooo….
I want to ask all of you this…
If television and media portrayed let’s say a size 6 or 8 as “the sexiest”, as they once did, and the size 6 or 8 was the girl who was considered the “beautiful one who always gets what she wants”, would it change societies perception of beauty to a healthier size or will society always find the stick thin girls more appealing because it’s a more unachieveable body type and we are more destined to want what we cannot have???
I do think we are more likely to find “remarkable” types more beautiful. A commonly-cited change in standards of beauty is the modern adherence to a generally skinny ideal compared to a 17th century (and for that matter, classical) ideal of corpulence. Part of it is just a reaction to what used to be considered beautiful (the pendulum swings back and forth), and part of it is driven by local conditions. When food is in short supply women and men who have access to a healthy supply will be remarkably fat and therefore more attractive. When food is plentiful, fat becomes more normal and therefore less attractive.
We discussed that same thing is an art history class years ago so I see what you’re saying and it makes a lot of sense. It would seem that supply and demand control our perceptions even more than the media but the media pushes these “ideals” on us faster. It is hard to imagine here in the “land of plenty” that we are NOT solely influenced my the media. I like that you’re thinking on a grander scale.
Well, I believe that the media plays a big role in what people see as beautiful. I mean when the media decided Marilyn was gorgeous everyone believed it and wanted to look like her. She was perfection and everyone strived to look like her. Somewhere along the line things swung around, and now the exact opposite is taking place. I think that if normal size girls like size 4′s and 6′s are promoted more, people would want to look like them. Unfortunately we are all influenced by what we see on tv and in magazines. Anyway, I am not a fan of the size zero trend, but I also don’t agree that being overweight is beautiful. I’m all for normal sized girls.
Does society not also influence what is displayed in the media? After all, they do have to cater to what the people WANT to see to get good ratings and sales. In a way it’s a chicken and egg situation, isn’t it?
Kelli, the media brainwashes us whether we want to admitit or not. We may even know it, and maybe brainwashing is a strong word but it fit.
Yes, if a majority of the shows on tv had size 6-8′s as the sexy leads we would see a trend where people would ditch the size 0 goal, and be more at ease…. I mean, not too long ago Jennifer Lopez’s body knocked Kate Moss’s out of the most wanted spot, this was in the late 90′s, it’s very possible that something like that could happen again, if enough female icons could change the minds of the peoplle.

I like her before right when she joined House, then she got too skinny but now she’s gotten “too much” weight for her size. It makes her head look bigger.

Woah! She looks like a totally different person. She must have been really quite underweight in house, cos I would never have guessed her lower body would get that big (not that she’s fat, I just mean she was really tiny all over).

not many people could rock a dress that short with shoes that flat, skin that white and sun that bright. shes got a fab bod and manages to look good even at the most unflattering angle (last pic). Still she is very skinny, but i never thought she looked unhealthy with her skinniness.
She looked unhealthily skinny before, her ribs and clavicle were protruding at the SAG Awards, now she’s gained weight and doesn’t look skinny anymore, she looks fuller, not fat, but then the camera is going to add several pounds on her body next season.
I’m more worried about the location of her pants in these pictures, where are they?
Yea, I actually saw her in person at the SAG awards and wow! She looked terribly unhealthy! Looking better now, although her non-pant outfit isn’t the most flattering…
I think she looks good…dress is way short, but hey.

It comes out, no one is naturally thin. We eat 5 burgers we get fat, we eat salad we get slim, unfortunately that is the truth…

I think she may actually be close to the same size? The maxim photo-shoot really emphasizes her upper body & I’m sure photoshop provided any necessary chiseling for her thighs. I think her upper body still looks very thin.
Wow, she must have gained a substantial amount because she use to be extremely slender. Is she a pear shape? Regardless, I think Olivia is still very pretty.
how can someone go from looking so good in a photoshoot to so plain on the streets…i just don’t get it.
Stylists, make up artists, pro set people, and of course photoshop.
goodness people are sure not feelin the love today! i thought she was WAYYY too thin before, so i’m thrilled that she’s (hopefully!) put a few pounds on.
it amazes (and quite frankly, sickens) me that people are calling her overweight when (1) on what planet is she OVERWEIGHT?! and (2) soo many actresses are underweight in real life (i grew up in hollyweird, so i’ve had the chance to see/meet a lot of them)
She looks as if she has gained weight to me. At first I did not recognise her because her face has also filled out a bit. However, her dress is also quite baggy so you can’t tell what her torso looks like even if she seems to have gained weight in her limbs. She may well be pear-shaped like Keira Knightley.
Is Keira Knightly PEAR SHAPED??? I always thought she was a stick all around but I could be wrong. I definitely agree she has gained a lot of weight! That dress or tunic or whatever it is looks awful on her, or anyone for that matter. Just because you are famous does not mean you have to always wear skimpy clothes. If you want the media and the papps to leave you alone then don’t go around trotting in a dress like that! It is insane what the world of photo shop can do. Clearly she is not naturally skinny she looks OK. I wouldn’t want those legs, but she is gorgeous and that counts for something.

She is NOT fat in the newer pictures but she is NOT slender at all. I prefer slender as that is what I am. Maybe or preferences have to do with our own body types.

ms_benes, she was THIN, which means she was UNDERWEIGHT. HTF is that preferable to her being what appears to be a healthier weight?(and yes, she is still slender, just a healthier size).
Don’t people realize that when she was thin it was probably due to the character she was portraying, which was a woman with a terrible illness?

I agree with you. I preferred her thin and in that shoot. Of course she isn’t clse to fat here, she is still faily slim, but for me she is now boring and unremarkable.

Everyone is saying how perfec Jessica L is, but her legs are thicker than what we see over here. Look at this girl’s arms before calling her fat, chunky, thich or whatever. If that’s thick to you, check your heads. Yes, we all saw her super skinny, super photoshoped. Some of us didn’t even like her back then. You have been fooled, now get over it.
