Nelly Furtado’s Little Black Dress Look

Nelly Furtado wore this little black number at the photocal of the Gala Awards 40 Principales 2009 in Madrid the other day.
Puffy sleeves can look great on curvy pear shapes, because they balance the figure and add some volume on top, but I don’t think that these ones right here are particularly flattering.
What do you guys think? How do you find this dress (and tights and shoes) on Nelly’s figure?

It would look better if it had more of an A-shape and if she didn’t have ankle straps. Now her legs look short and stubby-ish..
those are definitely the wrong shoes to wear…i have legs just like hers and I learned a long time ago to never wear ankle straps! When you have short and relatively heavier legs you need shoes that show your ankle.

Some girls have very slim legs. Others, to various degrees, have thicker, stronger legs and each must decide what looks best for them. Some, who have legs not as slim as they would like to will dress so as to make their legs look as delicate as possible and in that way compete with those very slim legged women.
Very slight and slender women make the most of their beauty by emphasising their delicate physical fragility and weakness. Some stronger and studier women diet and exercise to try and achieve this “ideal” femininity.
But some women can never come close to this ideal. Nellie is strongly built, with thick, richly muscled, powerful legs. No amount of dieting or careful dressing can achieve for her the “ideal” look represented by much slighter, more lightly muscled women. Even by trying to compete with them Nellie would only be dooming herself to failure, while at the same time reinforcing the idea that to be beautiful you must be slender, delicate, and fragile.
That’s why Nellie dresses as she does, for instance in these pictures, and chooses a dress to emphasise her thick, strong body, and ankle straps to draw attention to her muscular calves and strong powerful thighs.
Nellie is stunningly beautiful and the epitome of strong feminine beauty. So many women work out so hard and diet endlessly but are still forced to resort to hiding their legs in shame because they are too big to compete with the fragile femininity of models and celebrities. Nellie is leading the way into a world in which these women have an alternative ideal, although unfortunately one as unattainable for most as the original. It will still involve working out in the gym, this time to build up their strength and musculature as they pursue the beauty of powerful femininity. But few will be able to compete with Nellie’s natural power and beauty and in her presence they will hide their limbs in shame and marvel at Nellie’s powerful loveliness.

Her figure is alright, not the best I’ve ever seen but healthy and fine. Her outfit, however, is just soo unflattering. It makes her look like she’s got really weird proportions (which she doesn’t) and I agree that an A-shape for the dress would’ve been better.
I always thought she was a little taller, btw, but she looks quite short here (not that that’s bad).

I agree…she has got thee most gorg face! I met her at my salon @ years ago in Miami….remember thinking “that poor girl, such an awful body…waist up size 2…waist down size 14…” not a damn thing you can do about that…can’t have it all…can’t have it all..

lol so just because the weight isn’t in her belly she isn’t fat? her legs are thicker, and they are also FAT. get over it. i’m so tired of the double standards between pear shaped and apple shaped bodies. doesn’t matter where the huge amount of excess fat is… if its there its fat!
The way I try to gauge if someone is actually overweight is if I can picture them jogging for a while. I could totally see her working our hard. I think that’s her natural body shape, and she looks good.

I would love to have slender legs.
Actually for a majority of reasons those including health reasons. It’s better to carry weight in your legs/thighs then your midsection. I think she looks good, sure her legs are a little big for her body, but she doesn’t appear fat at all.

In case you have not-so-skinny-legs leave the ankle straps? She has put some weight on, but I still think she looks beautiful and it’s nice that she is bit different, not everybody needs to be skinny
