Nikky Blonsky: ‘I’m here not to look like all the other girls’
August 21, 2010 in Beauty & Body Image, Celebrity Quotes by Versus

Nikky brings our quote for the day:
‘Find things that make you feel great about yourself and then focus on that rather than on the things that make you upset about yourself. ‘Pick out the great things that you love about yourself. Whether it be your personality or jokes, whatever it is and focus on that rather than, “oh my hips are too big” or “I have fat on my thighs.
Beauty fades as we get older. We will be remembered for the important things like our personalities and the work that we’ve done and how we’ve impacted other people’s lives. Not what we look like. I just realise that I’m here for a reason. I’m here not to look like all the other girls. There’s something in me that separates me and makes me different and I don’t think it’s my weight. Obviously that’s the physical reason but I think when it comes down to it, I always believed talent would prevail.’
… says 21 year-old Nikky, who has the lead role in a new TV series called Huge (where she can be seen wearing a swimsuit- see here!).

clicked on the link to see more pictures but got completely distracted by another article talking about how Shakiras low slung trousers revealed stretchmarks on her hips. and that was necessary to point out why??
I am sure this girl is about to get severly bashed for her comments, just like on the original article (click above), but if she is happy, and out there living her life, good for her. The weight may drop of naturally as she gets older if she is happy and active, enough that she won’t suffer the worst effects of being severly overweight.
“The weight may drop of naturally as she gets older if she is happy and active”
I would totally agree if she would not have been older than 16-17
What she said is not true.. there are alot of people remembered for how they look, like Marilyn Monroe… Ask any teenager about Marilyn and they’ll know who she is and how she looks but they’ve never seen her movies or poems and know basically nothing about her rather than that she was beautiful.
I agree.
Marilyn Monroe (in my opinion) wasn’t a good actress or a good singer.
I’ve also read that she wasn’t a very good person.
Is she remembered for that?
Of course not!
The impact she made on society was with her appearance, so society remembers her appearance.
I think Marilyn Monroe actually was remembered for more than her looks, there were a lot of very beautiful women iin her era (maybe more beautiful than her) that people don’t really remember. Marilyn Monroe is remembered for her vulnerability and voice, things that stuck out to people. Think “haaaappy birthday Mr. President…” Memorable voice, memorable presence.
Very true. Her biography, by Donald Spoto, sheds alot of light on who she was. She was actually very intelligent and kind hearted, but unfortuneately alot of people refused to take her seriously.
Completely agree. There were more attractive women than Marilyn in her era, like Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Audery Hepburn etc, but they didn’t have the presence that she had – and they didn’t die young either. Marilyn is just that one celebrity who became the icon, because of the tragic end to her life and all the little trade marks she had; the voice, the white dress, the “ditsy blonde” act, the red lipstick, the white poodle perm….
I would say that Audrey Hepburn also became an icon.
No, I don’t agree. I’m 22, I only know Marilyn from her hot face, not even her body, just the face..
everything she said is very true.
but i worry about her health many years from now.
You know, she really is a beautiful girl – regardless of her weight. Now, here comes the slew of negative comments about how unhealthy she is, how fat she is, how what she’s saying isn’t true – maybe it’s true to her? And others who think freely?
Now… let’s wait and see how many girls get on here and post their measurments and what they do and don’t eat (just like they do EVERY time she’s featured in an article), and watch. It’ll happen – what they don’t get is that they are missing the point entirely.
Thumbs up to the comment.
Thumbs up to the comment [2]
agreed
All well and good, but Nicky’s point is not very well thought out if you ask me. Her point is, in short, “It doesn’t matter how fat and unhealthy your body is, if you’re a nice person you will be remembered for it”. Yes, but if you’re so morbidly obese, then you’re at a high risk for shortening your life span by a significant amount. You aren’t going to live to see yourself be remembered if you continue to maintain such a grossly unhealthy weight Nicky!
It’s good that she is happy with herself. I think she’s a good actress. Though very very unattractive.. i don’t just mean her wt but her facial features. She’s not a pretty big girl. Not that it should matter. Hayley Hasslehoff (sp) is an example of a big beautiful girl (though would look better at a healthier wt.. nevertheless is gorgeous).
i agree that she does not look attractive at this weight, but i don’t think it’s her facial features but the amount of extra weight on her face. i’ve never heard of hayley hasslehoff, but from what i can see from google she’s a lot smaller than nikki, so obviously her facial features aren’t as affected by her weight. i think nikki would look gorgeous if she slimmed down a bit
She’s trying to make it sound like it is her destiny to be the size she is (clinically obese)
She’s at the weight she is because she has an eating disorder or some kind of medical condition.
Take responsibility for it! You need to change your lifestyle.
Totally agree. Your addiction should not be what defines you. What she said about her talent is fine. But she is confusing self-destructive behavior with non-conformity.
“addiction”….. really? she’s not addicted to food or anything. Stop assuming stuff.
and Lara your assuming to. “eating disorder or some kind of medical condition.” You can’t be serious.
She can be serious.
Do you think that she eats 1800s calories of healthy, nutritious food (and only that) every day and goes to the gym three times a week?
It’s likely that she’s overeating, if she’s not overeating she must have a health problem that makes her obese.
Overeating is an eating disorder.
Eating disorders are unhealthy and are mental disorders.
She may have an addiction or dependency for happiness on food.
She may have some other unhealthy relationship of food.
No matter why she’s overeating (or what health problem she has), promoting it isn’t a good thing.
Please ignore my typos >_>
According to Reference.com promoting means to “help or encourage to exist or flourish; further.” So she is promoting something, but it’s not obesity, or her relationship with food. She’s promoting a healthier view of self, in which people focus on their positives rather than let their negatives take over their lives.
Of course she doesn’t eat 1800 calories a day.
But you dont know if she has a mental or eating disorder, because you dont know her.All you did was mess with words to make it seem like she has a disorder. your assuming too. I agree she shouldnt promote obesity(ingoring dictionary girl above me) but that doesnt give us a right to assume she has disorders.
I never said that she has a mental disorder.
I said that if she has an eating disorder, that is a mental disorder.
Why else would she overeat?
I’m sure that she works a lot, so I doubt that it’s boredom.
if this post was on someone who was obviously anorexic, this wouldn’t be a discussion. the “people come in different sizes” thing only goes so far. nikki doesn’t look like she’s at a healthy weight anymore than allegra versace does. maybe she doesn’t have a full-blown eating disorder, but it’s clear that she doesn’t have a healthy relationship with food
@ Minnie, your right, I understand.
@ Leah, nobody is having a “people come in different sizes” discussion. I’m just saying being very fat doesnt automatically equal eating disorder. (bad relationship with food? Okay. But eating disorder? NO) And i’m the type of person that would argue the exact same way for a super skinny girl. Being super skinny doesnt equal anorexic either. Thanks ; )
lol @ all your comments!
If an unhealthy relationship with food does not constitute an eating disorder, then what does?
And I mentioned a medical condition because we don’t know if she has a thyroid problem or something.
Essence, you’re very ignorant.
Please, you can’t be serious??? At least I don’t think I ‘m better than her because I’m not fat. (Thats what you sound like) It’s not right to assume she has a eating disorder just because she SUPPOSEDLY has an “unhealthy relationship with food” as you like to put it. I’m ignorant, yet your trying to be her doctor. Well good luck with that.
Well there are three types of overeating.
1) Due to excessive hunger, usually thanks to a medical condition like hypothyroid, or where the stomach and the brain don’t communicate properly so the stomach never tells the brain that it’s full. There’s also onewhere the brain can’t measure sugar levels in the blood, so it always thinks the person is on the verge of death and needs to eat.
2) Overeating due to bad knowledge of nutrition, or not having the means for healthy food, or not caring about it. This is your average overweight person in America. They’re in a rush, they get McDonalds, they don’t really know how to make a quick alternative meal that doesn’t have so much sodium and fat..etc.
3) The emotional overeater. These are people that use food as a void for other problems in their life. People that start out overweight due to #2 above, and become obese, typically continue their obesity because they start developing insecurities about their body, and then use food as a drug. And a large portion of obese people do fall into this category.
Judging by the fact that she has access to healthy food and information about healthy food (hell she afford those meals that come every day), I would say she most likely either has a medical condition, diagnosed or not, or she has mental issues. Also, emotional eating may not necessarily always be a full blown mental disorder, but it’s disorganized eating habits, which is still a condition that a psychologist could diagnose you with. It’s basically pre-eating disorder.
Lara – that isn’t what she’s saying at all. She’s saying she’s happy, particularly with who she is – which is the most important thing of all, and that women everywhere should aspire to reach that goal.
Also, you don’t know if she has a medical condition or an eating disorder. She could, in all theory, be a pretty healthy person. Genetics play a huge role in shapes and sizes, and she looks fairly proportioned and able bodied.
She may not have any medical condition nor ED, but she’s unhealthy.. that’s for sure.. With genetics involved or not..
The thing is that this person’s a role model as she’s a hollywood actress on a ABC tv show, which means many many people must see her and follow what she does.. And being all so happy and opening about “not dieting (by that I mean eating healthy..seen in other articles) or working out”, well.. I don’t find that a model I’d let my children follow, specially in a society in which many children are or will be, in the near future, clinically obese..
Fine that she’s happy with who she is.. I’m happy with who I am and many people will tell you the same..
But she’s just not right with what she promotes..
Everyone is role model – teachers, lawyers, doctors, police officers, scholars, scientists, big sisters, mothers, grandmothers – and here’s the kicker – many of them are overweight and are still legit role models and their size has little to do with WHY they are role models.
Personally, I’d rather my child look up to a person who is positive about themselves, their life, and becoming a well rounded person, no matter what their weight – than a television persona. But that’s just me.
As for “not dieting” – this doesn’t mean she doesn’t eat healthy. It means that she doesn’t put her body through yo-yo meals, her life focus isn’t on what’s on her plate – it’s on LIVING.
Just because your image and perception of what “dieting” entails is not the same across the board, doesn’t mean you get to slap a label on it.
You are in such denial
“not dieting” – this doesn’t mean she doesn’t eat healthy. It means that she doesn’t put her body through yo-yo meals, her life focus isn’t on what’s on her plate – it’s on LIVING”
Seriouslly?? You can enjoy food and enjoy life without being obese, I mean if you really have a weakness for food and you don’t really care for being thin that`’s fine, being a bit overweight won’t actually kill you. But she IS NOT overweight, she is O-B-E-S-E, and no matter the reason she IS unhealthy, so stop making excuses for her condition (and yours).
And as someone else said, we shouldn’t focuse only on her weight but on her talent so
“She should lose some, because we need her talent for long long from now”
There is no way that a person with that much abdominal fat could be healthy. Perhaps *relatively* healthy, as in, not quite to the level of full-blown diabetes or hypertension yet, but not *objectively* healthy. I’d put five bucks down on there being fatty streaks in all her main arteries, a warning sign of future heart attacks. Do you think she’ll still love her body when all the abuse she’s put it through winds up hospitalizing or killing her?
She is just like the ‘precious’ girl- FAT
Why point out the obvious?
She knows she’s fat, it’s like calling a cow a cow.
amen!
and as i she wont be remembered for her looks shell be remembered for being the obese girl in hollywood
I dont beleive her she acts like she doesn’t care how she looks like or that shes overweight she just dont want to diet and exercise so she changes the subject to make it sound like shes a role model for teenagers well to be a role model you have to be healthy then act all positive liar
It’s a great thing that she loves herself..But I guess she could do a greater thing by keeping loving herself and trying hard to lose some wieght with diets and exercise to gain her health back..Because if she really loves yourself,it means she cares about herslef and her health..
she can do*
I agree, it’s good to love yourself, but it includes taking good care of yourself
omigod,i’ve completely forgotten how to spell today!
if she really loves herself*
It’s such an important message to send out to love yourself, but coming from someone who is quite overweight, it just doesn’t seem safe.
What if a girl who is 25 lbs overweight is working really hard to get those pounds off to be healthier and happier and happens to stumble upon Nikky’s quote and then thinks ‘Hey, she’s happy being overweight, I can too! I’m down for a big mac with supersize fries now!’ I mean it just seems like an unsafe domino effect.
hopefully a girl won’t change her complete lifestyle because of what one celebrity says.
Yes, girls need good role models, but not many will look at Nikki and find that to be a desireable look.
If this said girl felt the need to be happy with who she by reading what Nikki Blonsky said, then fantastic – but no where did Nikki advertise going an scarffing down a big mac and fries. Way to take a nice girl saying she loves herself regardless of her outward appearance and turn it into a smear.
i find it really sad that when it comes to bigger ppl, everyone is sooooooo convienced that they (those ppl) always overeat….big mac, french fries…..dont you think she can have healthy problem that made her overweight but it has nothing to do with food? why commenting on skinny girl and offering her to eat a sandwich is insulting, like it is ok to look skin and bones…like skinny person CAN eat a lot and look skinny (which i know is possible, i have friends like that) but when it comes to a bigger person so it means she eats a lot and doesnt care???? dont you think it can be really hard for her to lose all the pounds due to some unknown reasons???? how do you know she eats all the junk?
and before someone call me obese, im slim and pretty fit.
Would you look me in the eye and tell me that Nikki Blonsky got to the level of obesity by eating a balanced 2000-calorie diet consisting primarily of complex carbs, lean protein, fruit and vegetables? Would you honestly be able to say that with a straight face?
You probably wouldn’t, because you know it’s not true. Eating a healthy and calorie-conscious diet does not result in obesity (excepting metabolic disorders, which are rare and manifest in other ways as well).
The reason why it is insulting for thin women to be called anorexic is because we know perfectly well that thinness can come naturally. You said it yourself, some girls can eat a lot of food and not gain weight (although you probably only see them occasionally eating large amounts of food and they make up for it later through exercise or lightening up the next few meals). However, obesity is not a natural state for anyone and it is always – ALWAYS – associated with a problem with the body or mind.
I just wish she would at least once say: “Yes, I admit being obese as I am is unhealthy, and I am not promoting that. And I know being severely overweight is very unhealthy and lowers your life expectancy and quality to an extreme degree.
And then she can go on with her ” I love myself blahblahblah…”
I can’t stand her comments because she always sounds like she’s promoting obesity!! That’s the last thing we need in this world.
I can really picture overweight teenagers going: “Oh she’s right, I won’t focus on my weight anymore, BRING ON THE CHEESE FRIES!!
I COMPLETELY AGREE!
Exactly. Thats what I think. Regardless of what people may say, she is a role model, and she is pretty much condoning being fat. She keeps subliminally saying she loves herself, unmindful of her size, and she can if she wants. I have no problem with that, but she needs to also say that being fat shouldn’t be a goal or anything like that. Without that added, it sounds like she’s saying dont be a normal size, be fat.
(I know thats not what she’s saying, but unless you read into it, on the surface thats what it sounds like)
The purpose is not to promote obesity but herself. She can’t appeal to men for her fan base, she can’t depend on her looks. But the bigger her fan base is the better she’ll do in hollywood. If she makes all the many many overweight ppl in America want to cheer her on for being a “nonconformist” rather than obese, because that’s what will make them all feel better about themselves, than that’s a good career move. A lot of fat ppl are cheering her on going, “We’re not fat, we’re nonconformist, and we’ll be remembered for our awesome personalities and our many talents.” They’ll just probably pass away at 50 from heart disease or diabetes or something.
And yes, I’m going to hell for those remarks I’m sure.
LOL funniest comment I’ve read. Nothing left to say. You are completely right. Good point. (about Nikki, not the Hell thing, which I actually disagree, you wouldnt go to hell for saying that LOL)
So true!!!
I don’t know, to me someone who has to say how happy and unique they are every single time they speak sounds pretty effing bitter. Just go on a diet. It’s not that hard.
Agreed 100%
lol are you insane? dieting and losing a significant amount of weight (20 pounds plus) is A LOT of work. It takes a long period of consistent effort, even if you’re exercising too (years in some cases). Sure, it can be done, and its certainly not impossible, but to belittle the work it takes to loose weight in a healthy manner and keep it off is ignorant and condescending.
I agree that this chick could/should lose a bunch of weight, but I think its important to note that significant weight loss isn’t an easy journey and I can understand why she’s chosen to use her weight to her advantage rather than fight through a year or two of hardcore diet and exercise in order to look like everyone else in hollywood and have a hard time finding a job.
Spoken like someone who doesn’t understand the point of a diet. It is not to go hungry all the time. It is to make a fundamental change in your lifestyle. It is to take you from hitting the McDonald’s drive-through every night, to eating a Kashi frozen meal instead, to cooking your own dinner from whole food ingredients, through gradual steps.
There’s nothing difficult about eating right; you just have to choose to do it, and if you fail, you’ve got nobody to blame but yourself.
/been there, done that, broke my leg, vegged out, now doing it again
Um it actually is pretty damn difficult to lose weight. Geez you’ve probably never had to lose more than 10 lbs in your life to make such an ignorant comment.
The only thing that ‘separates’ her from other girls is the extra 60 kilograms. Being obese is not something to be proud of, unless you are proud to shorten your life. The impact she hopes to have on people’s lives won’t happen if she dies in a few years from a heart attack.
I don’t think she is trying to promote her size and encourage others to follow her example. I think what she is trying to say is that you have to be happy with who you are, even if you are trying to be different (by losing or putting on weight, toning up, etc) you are still as you are in the short term and there is no point in going around hating yourself when it can’t be changed immediately. You have to be able to face the world with confidence and you won’t be able to if you believe you are fat and ugly.
She should lose some weight, because we need her talent for long long from now.
Best reasoning ever!
I wonder if she is truely happy with her weight or if she would be happier if she lost some and became more toned
It just reminds me of how celebs who are overweight and or obese, go and lose weight and then admit to the public how unhappy they were before
Anyways, there is no denying that excess weight stresses the body and there are serious health risks associated with too much weight as there are health risks for being too underweight
I think she’s out of balance :S, amazing talent though
yeah, beauty fades, or in this case it actually is nowhere to be seen, because obesity is doing its job and I can’t see anything else, because fat seems to be everywhere.
I’m curious, if she can run for example.
She is obese and she knows it. It is for her own good to lose weight and achieve a healthy weight so she can avoid heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and other diseases – especially when she gets a lot older!
Exactly! Beauty fades alright, and so does the body’s capability of handling clogged arteries.
I actually agree…usually I’m like being overweight in unhealthy blah blah blah (I have too much experience with watching people struggle with overeating and weight related illnesses) but I think she has a point. Sure, she won’t get some (a lot) of work cuz of her size BUT she will get some work because of her size too. Its her niche, if she were in the middle (neither thin nor heavy) she may get no work at all. And think of how many women who are her size who will never lose weight (losing weight is hard, takes time + dedication + know how) and want to see someone there size represented and succeed. Sure, she might have some health problems later on but so do people who smoke, drink, or whatever. Its life, it damages you regardless lol.
yeah, life damages you regardless, so why not being obese
oh, my gosh, what a delusional thought…
Health and self esteem are not the same thing.
Is she physically health, no
Does she have to feel worthless because of it, no
I don’t have looks on my side but I do have talent is what she is saying
Why can’t she be more concerned with her HEALTH?! Not to lose weight to look like every other girl in Hollywood but to BE healthy. Sometimes I think larger celebrities like this just give up and think it is their fate to be this size, she may come off as being confident about it…but healthy ceratainly not. It really irks me with the whole “BBW love” thing..obesity is NOT healthy! Gah I don’t understand how celebs like this(another example Kelly Clarkson) don’t want to be healthy and take care of themselves? They have all the money in the world for a good nutritionist and trainer…why not use that to your advantage???
I don’t like how she says she’s not here to look like “all the other girls.” Other actresses and models have unique qualities and I don’t think they would all like to be grouped together. If looks aren’t important to her then she shouldn’t bash other celebrities for all looking the same. IMO
I predict that she’ll preach self-acceptance until she does a Ricki Lake and loses all the excess weight. Then she’ll be on the cover of People magazine, talking about how much happier she is now that she’s thin.
I could see that happening as well. Though, i don’t think those think exclude each other. She has valid points and could be real happy with herself, it doesn’t mean she’d think she’s at an honestly good weight for her.
This girl is not a role model. Of course society is shallow and hating yourself doesn’t accomplish anything, but if you’re the removed by admin* you have major health and mental problems,
she may not be a role model for you or me, but, believe it or not, there’s people out there that look up to her.
I like what she had to say. She may be a big girl, but she is happy and seems to have a great personality. Looks will only take you so far in this life. And at then end of the day it’s who you are inside that really matters. Your family and friends don’t love you for what you look like, they love you for who you are. And, if you are in a relationship, yes physical attraction plays a big part, but a man won’t stay with a beautiful woman if she is vapid and has no sense of humour or any no personailty that makes her unique.
Ooops….didn’t mean to put *any*.
LOL….I meant no personality…..because personality is what makes you unique. Can’t type today.
I’m surprised she hasn’t been called “curvy”.
(smirk)
I take that back, the Daily Mail article does.
I don’t think she’s saying that she is not responsible for her own health, but rather that one’s physical appearance does not define who they are. This sounds like a simple message but it’s one that society so often skips over. I really admire what she has to say and she’s absolutely right. Health, beauty, and personality are intertwined because they are all pieces of an individual, but they are also separate. Just as we shouldn’t judge a person based on their looks, we also shouldn’t look down upon them because of the state of their health. The core message Nikky is sending is beautiful and it is one that would benefit us all to remember. It would be wonderful if she were in perfect health, but the reality is that most people in our society are not, regardless of their weight. We shouldn’t debate her health. She wants us to see her personality shining through, and that is how we should try to view everyone.
It’s nice to see there ARE sensible people on here!
I’m ALL for her being happy with who she is, and proud of the person she is. That’s something I would hope everyone can have in their life. But REGARDLESS of how she feels about herself and what her self-confidence is, she is OBESE. And that is unhealthy.
It really doesn’t matter whether she’s a chronic overeater or just genetically more inclined to be overweight – the health risks are pretty well the same either way. I have a friend who is obese and whose father is obese as well, and a diabetic. She overeats very unhealthy food, but clearly she also has a genetic predisposition towards it too, so sometimes it can also be a double edged sword.
But my point is that whatever the underlying reason is for the obesity, it’s just not RIGHT to be proud of such a devastating health risk. It’s wonderful for her to be proud of who she is and her accomplishments, but her weight is unhealthy, plain and simple.
She’s no better than anyone else. She’s using her body as her selling point. That is what is keeping her famous, not her talent. She’s as bad as any other who insists upon themselves. She’s another washed up actress who happens to be fat and obviously has no problem exploiting herself for it.
she should meet Gabourey Sidibe, i think they can become friends or smth, they both talk bout “love myself no matter how i look”
maybe Hollywood will also soon do this “promoting plus-size” like fashion world tries to do now
well, DUH!
she doesn’t look healthy, so this “plus-size” role-model is not ok. It’s just the same bad example for teens as super skinny girls.
removed by admin* and i think she needs to loose some weight for health reasons. and if she thinks she is different from all the other girls in Hollywood perhaps she should do something to prove that to us instead of just saying it (which anyone can do )
The amount of comments Nicky makes about not caring about her appearance is unreal. The fact she continually feels the need to defend her weight suggests to me that her “I love my body” attitude is all a facade; it’s as though she is putting on a suit of armour against everyone else.
But at the end of the day, it’s her fault. It isn’t like her body size is something she can’t control. She has the opportunity to loose weight and become healthy, and with being healthy comes having an attractive body. She must be uncomfortable being so fat; it would make daily tasks difficult, and it will be having a negative impact on her fertility. Less than 1% of the population have a metabolic disorder which makes them unable to loose weight.
Nicky must be eating around 3000 calories most days, in order to remain so overweight. The heavier you are, the higher your metabolism, so the more you need to eat to maintain your weight. This is why when obese people loose weight, the first six months of weight loss is faster, because the metabolism is higher and the body feels less need to conserve fat. Then, as the dieter becomes lighter, the metabolism slows down and weight loss is less rapid. The dieter needs to reduce their calorie intake even further if they are to continue loosing weight, just never below 1300 calories, which is the bare essential amount for the average woman to live, although this 1300 value varies from individual depending on bone structure, height, etc.
Anorexics have a very slow metabolism, which is why they loose their appetites. If Nicky dropped her calorie intake to 2000 calories a day and started exercising, she would begin to loose weight. Then, once she lost a few stone, she’d need to drop that to 1500 calories and continue exercise. Slow, steady weight loss keeps the metabolism high and prevents the body going into starvation mode, which leads to a weight gain as soon as regular eating habbits are resumed.
No other celebrity constantly makes little speeches about being happy with their size, unless they have been asked in an interview or provoked….. For example, when the media critisized Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jessica Simpson for supposedly being “fat”…. In actual fact, those two women had healthy body fat percentages. Unlike Nicky here, who actually is dangerously overweight, as if i need to state the blatantly obvious.
I hope no one gets mad at me for saying this, I love Nikki’s quote but I do want her to loose weight. She looks way to big for her very tiny height of 4’10″. It looks like her weight is putting a lot of pressure on her lower body. Don’t get me wrong I don’t expect her to get as skinny and toned as the other women shown on this website, but I would like to see her loose 10-25 pounds. She would still be fat so her show wouldn’t be a problem, but I’d be a lot less worried about her, health. I love Nikki Blonsky and I don’t want to see her health suffer because of her weight.
I want her to be around for a long time.
Her health will still be at great if she only looses about 25 pounds. If she is to be healthy, Nicky needs to loose A LOT of weight. Her health is far more important than a TV show about being fat.
She’s unique? Being obese doesn’t make you unique, it makes you lazy, unless she has some sort of health condition that makes her obese. Yes she may have a slow metabolism and all that, but she could still be at a much healthier weight. And don’t tell me she just doesn’t want to obsess over her food, you don’t need to obsess, especially as she has the money to go to a nutritionist and get a general template of what she should eat. She doesn’t need to be tiny, but losing enough weight to at least get from obese to overweight would be a nice start.
Completely agree. Every single person who has a normal metabolism (ie, they aren’t one of the genetically fine boned, extremely high metabolism types who are unable to gain weight) is capable of becoming obese, if they gradually keep increasing their food intake and don’t exercise enough to accomodate the extra calories.
Besides, there is nothing admirable about being unhealthy by your own choice.
I find many of the comments on here very sad. Firstly, it seems that so many people are missing the point; she is speaking about improving one’s self esteem and focusing on positive aspects of one’s life. Just because she says she doesn’t dwell on the “negatives” (which most here would assume is her weight) doesn’t mean she’s delusional or in denial about her body. Improving one’s outlook on life and seeing more positivity in ourselves and others is something everyone, regardless of BMI, is always a great idea.
No one here can judge health by simply looking at Nikky, or any other celebrity, for that matter. There are so many factors that go into weight and body type: genetics, medications, food, activity level – just because someone is fat does not mean you can assert with certainty that they are lazy and overeat. It is much easier for most bodies to gain and maintain weight (as we have needed these functions to survive in times where food was not as plentiful).
The diet industry is so profitable because 95% of diets don’t work – plain and simple. Losing weight is easy for some, difficult by doable by many, and downright frustrating for just as many. “Eating right” and “exercising” is not always a sure bet that a person will lose weight, either. I have been a personal trainer for 6 years and have clients that have lost, gained and maintained – many of my clients are significantly “overweight” but are just as mobile and active as clients that are smaller.
My point is that you cannot judge a person’s health by their appearance, nor should you attempt to. I wish people here would just say instead, “this person’s fat and i don’t like it” instead of masquerading as some kind of concerned citizen appointed with making sure everyone they see is “healthy”. I’m not saying that I think everyone who is concerned is lying, but I think it’s a convenient way to react to an overweight person in a society that constantly “reminds” us that overweight people are lazy, sloppy, worthless, ugly and need “fixing”.
Lastly, I can’t help but roll my eyes at the people who are worried that because she’s expressing love for herself that overweight people who look up to her will decide that they are going to gain or maintain weight because she’s saying “it’s ok”. Give me a break!
it’s nice seeing your comment among this overflow of negative, and sometimes purely offensive comments…when did it become ok to describe anyone as “gross”, “lazy” “the size of a house” , saying she had “a mental disorder” or giving some kind advice like “just go on a diet”? I know this is a website about weight and body types, and that’s what we’re discussing here, but let’s keep it civilized!
Personal trainer for six years, eh? And you never figured out that there is only one diet that actually works: The one that creates a calorie deficit. Furthermore, you never figured out that diets should never, ever be a temporary quick-fix, but instead a lifelong commitment to that lifestyle. I call shenanigans.
I get the feeling that most comments abour health don’t really care about it, as much as wanting to say that they don’t approve and using it as an excuse. Why do you, internet commentator, assume that you care more about her health than she does? Yes, she is overweight, but she also has wonderful self esteem. What is it to you if she is unhealthy? If she doesn’t feel the need to lose weight, then it is Nikky’s perogative. I feel like if it were a thin person who didn’t work out and diet we wouldn’t be calling her lazy, so why is it okay to say it about Nikky? It’s not your life and this sancimonious harping on about her health is so tiresome.
I actually think she has a good point in saying that looks are not anything, but then again, she should realize that it is not healthy for someone to be that size. There are many diseases associated with being obese.
*everything (I accidentally said anything)
“There’s something in me that separates me and makes me different and I don’t think it’s my weight.”
I hate to be the one that points it out, but it is her weight that differentiates her. If you look at the three leading roles she’s had, in Huge, Hairspray and Queen Sized, they are not roles that could have been offered to many other celebrities without said celebrity gaining a significant amount of weight. In that prospect, she has found her ‘niche’ market, but it is her weight that differentiates her.
I think its great that she loves her body, so many people have body confidence issues nowadays. However, I think it would be even better if she came out and said ‘I love my body, so I’m going to try and get a bit healthier, lose a few pounds and make sure I get to enjoy it for as long as possible’ because at her current weight, her risk of any number of diseases is so much higher than it could be.
I don’t think that’s her fault, it’s the fault of people who only buy and watch movies with above-average looking people.
So only movies with skinny people are produced. And she is FORCED into a niche.
I know many people who switched from Hollywood movies to European arthouse and they had a major shock. Seeing love stories between people are not skinny, beautiful and young! The HORROR. And some men had scenes with women who had DROOPY NATURAL BREASTS and yet their heads didn’t implode.
I’m not sayin European movies are all that way, but on average, you can use your acting talents a lot easier then in Hollywood, if you look atypical.
God, such bland responses (from Nikky).
First off, I mean, what does being remembered for your personality really mean? Personalities are not stationary things, nor are they the same in the same environments. Do any of us have the same personality we did when we were 2? 5? 10? 20? 30? 40? 80? Nope. So how exactly can you be, “remembered,” for it.
I get her general gist…that what’s on the outside is only a factor of your entire self-worth. But the way she expresses it is so shallow and thoughtless. It’s kind of like beauty pagent responses like “I want world peace!” and “we should all be good people!” The sentance has meaning, but there is no meaning behind the sentance. It doesn’t tell you what world peace and good people is nor how it can be achieved. Same with her statement.
ok i saw a comment about hayley hassellhoff being a ‘pretty’ big girl, this just shows how diluted our society has become, that girl is not big whatsoever. the point f her being on that show is that shes the thinnest girl at fat camp and no one understands why shes there, and shes there because she thinks to be beautiful she needs to be a size 0. its to show how ridiculous our world has become with whats an acceptable weight, its ridiculous and makes me sick
Wow she’s the thinnest girl at a FAT camp.. it’s like saying she’s the fattest girl at an anorexic rehab center. It’s still not healthy. I didn’t say anything about her being more beautiful at a size 0. I said if she lost a little weight. And yes she is big. Studies show that Americans that are 20 pounds overwt think they are in the “healthy range” for their ht. Fat is very acceptable in America cuz the majority is overwt.
I agree with a previous post that the point Nikki is probably trying to bring home is that the person you are is more important that the person you weigh.
However, the problem is that like many celebrities she is very ambiguious with her statements and it is thus easy for them to become misconstrued.
After seeing the picture in the swimsuit, it all makes sense. She is surrounded by people just as large or larger than her, told probably how sexy and beautiful she is by them (which is not a bad thing, don’t get me wrong), fed the same amount/kind of food as them and having the same lifestyle.
Then, there is the real world. That hits hard! Destroys the little world she has built around her. And hurts. Therefore all the justification. But the more she’s justifying herself, the more it hurts as she realizes the big gap between her world and the “others” world, the more she goes back to her own world for comfort and then comes back again justifying herself.
This is not a criticism, it’s just my analysis, my understanding of her…
Weight fluctuates a lot more than your personality. She’s right. It’s better to be a kind person.
It’s a shame that she’ll probably see a lot of ugly at her current size.
I also think she gained weight for that new show, I don’t recall her being that big before. And I thought she was lovely in Hairspray.
I bet all the people defending her are overweight. lol
There is absolutely NO reason to excuse her weight. It’s not healthy, and its not attractive. Looks aren’t everything, but she’s delusional if she thinks being fat makes her unique. Just wait and see, she’s going to be on the cover of people a few years from now after a drastic weight loss and she’s going to be talking about how much happier she is being skinny. No one is truly happy being fat. Its not natural, its not healthy, its not attractive. Lose weight, Nikki!
No, some of the people defending her are aware that you can be just as unhealthy – if not more so – at a ‘healthier’ weight just in less obvious ways.
It’s just easier – and in some ways socially endorsed – to judge her negatively because she’s heavy, and use the justification that you’re doing it because you ‘care’.
Whatever.
Alot of people are happy being overweight, and they don’t give a s**t what other people think. And i wasn’t defending her because i am overweight at all, i am 5’6 and 110lbs. I just thought she made a good point.
Nope your wrong. I’m stick skinny and have been and will continue defending her. No one’s excusing her weight, but all you people that are throwing negative comments at her are ignorant. And i feel i can judge you that way since your judging her so much on her weight. Like Pixie said, she dont give a f**k what you think. She’s gonna do what she wants to.
huge thumbs up to lucy , if she feels good how she looks then good 4 her im actually jealous i cant think that way.
ok well her message is a good one. Be happy with yourself, all of us should be. But coming from someone who is morbidly obese isn’t convincing. Why? Not because she’s obese and so therefore she can’t be convincing. It’s because usually when you truly love your body, and your happy with it, you will take care of yourself. Now idk whats wrong with her exactly, but it seems to me like she’s trying to avoid the subject of her weight and goes on talking about personality and such. It’s like she completely gave up on taking care of her body, maybe because of her weight. My friend told me that her way of kind of shielding herself from her weight would be to crack jokes about herself and to tell people that personality matters more. I get that. I really do. She’s now losing weight slowly and she’s opened up to me a lot. So happy or not, i can’t really believe her. Sorry folks. She’s not fully living. No matter what she says she’s always going to deal with her weight in basic life situations. It’s harder to live life and be confident when you’re obese. And the only reason hollywood even has her in there is because they made a tv show about fat people. It’s a touching show i like it, but if that show ends she’ll be done for. Like someone said, she’ll just be known as the obese girl in hollywood. Who knows maybe we will see her lose weight in the future? some people realize what they’re missing and their results are amazing.
Great, you have self esteem. Great, you love yourself.
But you need to lose some weight.
Sorry, I believe the ‘I am big and beautiful’ and this weight is a defense mechanism.
It is so sad that she is a role model for young teens to think it is OKAY to be overweight and unhealthy- this is why the younger generations have a shorter lifespan. She needs to take control of herself, start eating healthy and exercising- and fess up that she is and unhealthy image for young teens. . . .
yeah, she’s not here to look like the other girls, but you will never look as good as them. Being this overweight will catch up to her one day.
Personally I’m really happy for Niki. I’m not a big girl myself (53kg) but even I’m not overly happy with my body. If a woman is comfortable with her body and secure within herself whilst in HOLLYWOOD of all places I think she should be commended not torn down. Yes, her excess weight is likely not healthy but we don’t know her diet or exercise regime. Health can certainly not be assessed purely through appearance-how many skinny celebs brag about being able to eat burgers and donuts daily cause of their genetics?? While their appearance may be hot their health is suffering, people don’t seem to ‘care’ so much for the wellbeing of these celebrities do they?? I believe Niki will choose to lose the weight in the future when she is ready, but I don’t believe people should tear her self-esteem down with the pretence of ‘care’ and ‘concern’ until then. It’s her life and her body so good on her for celebrating her size and making her mark on Hollywood through it.

i agree with what she says completely, and theres nothing wrong with a little curves, but shes pushing it. theres a difference between unhealthy and clinically obese, and a curvy voluptuous woman. i dont care how talented you are, it will affect your health greatly later on.
