Gemma Arterton Feels Fat at Size 8-10
May 15, 2010 in Beauty & Body Image, Celebrity Quotes by Versus

A few days ago, Price of Persia’s Gemma Arterton told us that her slender figure “doesn’t come naturally”. Today, Gemma complains about how the industry makes her feel fat sometimes:
“It is ridiculous. I went to a designer the other day — who will remain nameless — and he said to me: “I’m amazed that you’re fitting into these sample sizes. I said, “I’m a size eight to ten! I should be amazed that the largest you’re making these is a size six.’”
‘Occasionally, I come home and say to my fiance [stunt driver Stefano Mioni]: “I feel really fat.”
‘He says: “Will you just listen to yourself? You know you’re being silly.” And I do know that when I’m home, but in the business it’s different.’
“The only way that I could ever be a size six is if I didn’t eat. I’m not naturally meant to be that size, and I just feel like there’s a responsibility to people who aren’t that size to make that known. All I can do, I think, is try to look good. I have things made for me so they fit.”

us size 8-10 or uk size 8-10?
its really sad that they gotta live under that kind of pressure. she looks good to me.
it must be UK 8! Because I think she’s English, and she looks like a US 6.
yup its uk, and yup she is english, and like Sharen said, she looks to small to be an american 8
She is gorgeous, and she doesn’t ever need to feel fat. Being in a industry where you are always watched and always having to do cloth fittings, it’s hard. But, no one should ever come home and tell the one they love that they feel fat.
god…she isn’t fat
stupid people

she’s hot!
I was just going to post that same picture. She IS hot! Not even remotely “fat”… look at that waist, I would kill for that gorgeous cinched waist and flat tummy
She is saying she is a US size 4 to 8. Which is fair enough, because she is tall, isn’t she? She has a nice hip waist ratio, a nice defined waist. I think she isn’t delicately built, which is why she will never be a UK 6 (which is a US 2, which is teeny tiny, especially for a taller girl).
In fact, she would probably look great as a US 8. She is tall so it would probably make her more womanly and fleshy, but still keep her slender in the right places.
Why should anyone have to justify not being a UK size 6?
She looks perfect to me.
Versus please would you give us French sizes I mean what is size 6 !I am really confused

… though I don’t know how accurate it is.
I think Gemma’s UK size 10 would be a US size 6 (not 8 how they say there).
thank you
I never would have thought she is size 8-10. She has bigger bone structure but I thought she was a size 6.
Anyway, I think she looks AMAZING the way she is right now. I watched Clash of the Titans and she was still bigger, as her body is bigger, but very toned. She honestly shouldn’t go thinner. She would look good one size bigger too.
I wish she would stop taking away from her beauty though with bad makeup and dresses!
Yeah, and I bet with the more movie roles that she gets, the thinner she will become. Lots of these actresses go on to contradict what they say.
amen, girl.. !!
she definitely means size 8-10 in uk/aus sizes…which is a size 4-6 US sizes…seriously i find it ridiculous that she has to even question herself about her size just because she isn’t a size 0 or 2….why are body standards so skewed these days….personally makes me sick…and this is coming froma size 4 her….but wait i guess im considered fat too but designers
she definitely means a uk 10 which is US 6.
So that’s a size 6? That’s pretty skinny if you ask me. But I don’t work in Hollywood so what do I know…
it is definitely a UK 8-10, which means probably a small US 6. i think a conversion chart would say it is a US 6-8, but that is sort of off…i mean, depends on the store and style, but generally, in my experience, a UK 10 is really more of a US 6.
and i’d say she is a small 6. she looks amazing! she has an absolutely fantastic body. she is someone who can look great lean and toned or a little fuller and softer. she’s right – her size should be the ‘standard’ for sample size clothing. not that people can’t and shouldn’t be smaller, or larger, but she is currently a lean, averaged sized woman…more people could fit – especially because smaller celebrities can have it taken in!
Unfortunately so I think she is referring to uk sizing which is soooooo sad that at a small us size 6 she feels this way hell even she was talking about us sizing she is far from fat she has a very soft and feminine figure… smh
Ayyyeee. The girl is gorgeous. She’s not big at all. Yes, she’s not model skinny, but she’s definitely on the thin, slim and toned side. I think she looks amazing, and when I watched her in Clash of the Titans, I was jealous.
Shame seeing as for most people being a UK size 6 is pretty much impossible unless you are very petite indeed or have zero curves. In fact very few shops on the British high street even stock size 6 so I don’t know what the designers are thinking.
I don’t think I can judge her size based on this picture as I think it is a very flattering dress and she is wearing extremely high heels. I would have put her at a size 10 though. She is far too curvy to be an 8 given her height, broad shoulders and long torso.
she’s so pretty and looks amazing!
She’s beautiful and looks perfect just the way she is. I have to agree with Polly though. Just watch. The more rolls she gets the thinner she will get. It’s so sad because she looks great!
This girl is beautiful! She has the most beautiful face and skin and the recent prince of persia pics i ve seen show that she is very very pretty/ versatile and also…(more IMPORTANTLY) she is a great actress!!….which is her job!! It would be a bit silly if she was a size 6 but couldnt act for toffee wouldnt it…..her films would flop and no one would ever hire her again….even if she went to size zero! People need to get real especially casting directors, they should compare the amount of people that went to see Megan Fox in Jennifers Body….with the amount of people who watched Kate Winslett in ‘The Reader’……its about the acting, not the size of her thighs…..the only time this really truly matters is when they are dressing up for big awards ceremonies and galas to celebrate their…..wait for it…..ACTING!!!!!!!! grrrrr, makes me so cross!! Only 10 years ago Titanic was released….and hardly anyone commented on Kate Winslets body, other than to say how beautiful she was….men lusted after her body and her softness! grrr. rant over….Gemma Arterton….youre gorgeous! end of.
I’m so sick of designers wanting healthy talented movies stars to look like sickly victorias secret models that stick their bums out to fake having ‘curves’. No one can be curvy at size 6!
I don’t want to see that sickly disease anorexia in the fashion industry to migrate over to hollywood (I’m not including people like lindsay lohan b/c seriously who is she?)
Being skinny will effect their movie roles anyway i mean,
who is more believable in a corset period movie kate winslet or boney keira knightly?
This makes me so sad
the amount of women that are made to feel fat is ridiculous in todays society! I’m a 16 year old girl and I know that I would kill for Gemma’s slim figure! She’s not fat and the fact that she is made to feel that way is disgusting. She looked gorgeous in Prince of Persia and I just can’t believe people could even consider calling her fat. I’d love to slap that designer >:(
I just read an article that basically attacked Gemma and her appearance and it made me so angry! I think I must be blind because I’m having INCREDIBLE difficulty seeing her “double chin” and her “large tummy”, all I see is a slim, perfectly sized figured beautiful woman! An example that should be followed, not destroyed. I hope she stays the same weight because she looks amazing. That’s my 10p!
It makes me so happy to see so many comments talking about how beautiful and thin Gemma Arterton looks. I’m a US size 6 and I still feel like I’m viewed as fat. I really love Gemma because she looks like I do, and thus it really bothers me when people call her fat.
No matter her size its her talent that shines through. She really has grace and that is what I feel makes her beautiful. Oh and she is normal size compared to hollywood, I only wish that Hollywood would look at her and think “She is a talented and gorgeous, now lets find see more actresses like her”
She looks like a 10 uk size…and she looks stunning. I get how someone can feel ‘fat’ even when they’re slim though. I’ve always felt a bit insubstantial because I’m 5’8 and have always been a UK size 4. Finally I’ve managed to become a size 8 and I feel huge suddenly. I feel too frumpy and big and mis-shapen to be lady. Its confusing and upsetting to get what I always wanted and find it so hard to adjust to. I’ve given up trying to gain weight because of how it has made me feel and know I’ll feel better when I return to my normal size 4. Its a hard thing to explain to most people. I haven’t a distorted self image – I know I am thin, but I’[m used to being thin ; being thin is all I’ve ever known. Now I just feel like I’ve tumours rather than curves. Its just very unpleasant, despite being able to look at size 12 women and think ‘wow, they’re stunning’.
fashion designers are getting ridiculous, i love there designs..but they are making girls more and more sick to look like models. its pathetic. gemma is a PERFECT example of a gorgeous curvey woman, god not even curvey, she has a healthy fantastic figure and its all this media shit that aim at woman to look more like sickly skinny woman. gemma is absolutely gorgeous and designers should be ashamed of themselves for selling such small size designs. i thought designers always say ”everyone should look beautiful, feel beautiful” well how can they in your clothes when you dont have many womans sizes?
sorry for the rant
gemma your bloody beautiful!
When we people realise, reading these coments, that curves relate to body SHAPe, not body SIZE. Even at a ‘size 0′ my hip to waist ratio is more than ten inches difference…my body shape doesnt change with my weight because my bones and DNA dont change.
Cruves are nothing to do with weight.
You must remember that some people aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed. But you are right. Curves are about shape, not size.
Come on let’s face it, she looks like she has wider shoulders than most thin men. I think she’s overrated and she looks like she’ll be a right fatty when she’s older. I live in the UK, most the women are fat and eat crap. They don’t generally have a nice body type, give me european women, they’ve got awesome curves are are often naturally slender with curves in the right places. Sorry Gemma but your a fatty!
Are you serious? Your a tool and I bet your a severe looking thing! So don’t you dare judge until you’ve got the balls to put photos of yourself up! And when she is older? She’s not 12. Do not call her fat, you’re just asking for a punch in the face.
brits are european you tool…. gemma is TINY.
English people, d’know bout Brits as a whole, refer to ‘europians’ meaning ‘continental europe’. Its an odd thing, I guess if you dont live here, but everyone talks about ‘europe’ like they ain’t a part of it…because they mean ‘continental europe’…which we are seperate from being an island.
She is hot!!
She doesn’t look fat at all, if she is considered fat then there is no hope for the rest of us!
Why do people always base there opinion on looks? Talent is more important!
She looks about the right size for her bone structure and height (5 ft 7 in), maybe a bit on the slim size. I don’t think she is considered fat in the movie industry, not even in the vacuous Hollywood circle. She would obviously be considered too ‘fat’ in modelling circles, hence that remark from the designer in the article. But face it people, models are usually skinny because of industry pressues – if they aren’t stick thin they don’t get the contracts, so sadly the designers and fashion editors etc are to blame. I never had the impression that just because skinny women are portrayed as the ‘ideal’ in magazines, I should feel inferior if I didn’t comply. I don’t even read mags anymore. Surely if you have some common sense you will see that models are peddling a lie, a fantasy. If the fashion industry turned around tomorrow and said that only long arms are considered sexy, are you going to feel bad about your average sized arms? It’s ridiculous.
I am a UK size 6-8 because I lost weight after having my baby. I was a size 12 at my ‘fattest’ during my pregnancy but I just enjoyed my weight gain with curiosity and indulgence because it kinda felt nice and feminine. My bf liked me as a size 12 and constantly tells me to eat even more than I already am. I am trying to gain more fat now but it’s incredibly hard for me. So on that note, naturally slim people shouldn’t be persecuted either unless you have clear evidence that they are trying to starve themselves.
I think that on the whole, mean prefer slim to plump women (basically the median range). Unless one aspires to be a fashion model, I don’t think why any woman should subject herself to such torture to be thin, despite what other bitchy women say.
i love her size…. dont care what numbers say…. she looks awesome …. just love her
